Hello loyal CAAC fans and A2Zers! I can’t believe we’re mid-way through the April challenge. A few of you voiced hopes of seeing Marvin the Martian in this series. I knew right off which characters I wanted to include and Marvin definitely made the first cut. In fact the very first time I drew Marvin <—link to illustration] was for Thursday Art Date with Rain.
Although not named at the start, Marvin appeared on the Looney Tunes scene in 1948 as Bugs Bunny’s antagonist in Haredevil Hare.
Later on, in The Hasty Hare (1952) Marvin was referred to as the Commander of Flying Saucer X-2. It wasn’t until 1979 after the character began attracting merchandising interest Marvin was named and appeared in The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie (trailer). Bugs did refer to Marvin as a “bowling ball wearing a spittoon”once. I suspected it’s because his head resembles an ant.
Marvin has tried to destroy the Earth on a number of occasions with his Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator for no other reason than the Earth obstructs his view of Venus. He has an odd sound to his voice and often speaks technobabble. Marvin is known for some of his trademark quotes, “Where’s the kaboom: There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom!”, “Isn’t that lovely?”, and my favorite, “This makes me very angry, very angry indeed.”
While at Wiki I glanced over Marvin’s connection with popular culture to learn that his likeness appears in a miniature on the Mars Spirit Rover, as well as on the mission launch patch. I had to laugh when I saw that he appears in the FBI lineup with other TV aliens in an episode or two of The Simpsons. That’s just a few things from the list
I hope you enjoyed today’s edition of my Looney Tunes A-Z Art Sketch series and I appreciate that you included me in your day. Don’t forget to say hello in comments and please leave your direct link for today’s contribution for others to find you easier.
Before I scoot off, let me point out today I also have a mid-month BoTB <—direct link] taking place and I hope you’ll decide to vote for your favorite cover artist. Isn’t that lovely? I’m heading over to the A2Z headquarters to see who’s joined the party now. I hope to see you again tomorrow for the next letter in the alphabet in my Looney Tunes Art Sketch series! X💋X💋 Cathy
