SlingTV

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost five years ago in a random spat I mentioned the coming of cable channels via streaming services. I think at the time it was just beginning to edge its way onto the market.

I always wanted cable so DH can enjoy football or NASCAR but the expense really ouches!  Yes, we have cable but not in the sense you might think. We have high speed internet and basic cable but not the cable box.  We can view some cable channels if they have an app available for Roku or AppleTV offering some viewing flexibility.  That’s where SlingTV comes into the picture.

Last October while we were on vacation DH threw this out on the table as a possibility. After we reviewed the packages available, we decided to subscribe to their service. We also consider YouTube TV but in the end SlingTV won out because of the sport channels availability DH wanted.

It’s been a lot of fun for DH to relax on the weekend watching a good game or car race but what’s really neat is that you can record live programs super easy. I mean SUPER easy! When I see something scheduled to air, all I do is click the ‘Record’ button and that’s that. I just wait for it to show up in our Recorded program section. The Orange & Blue combo package we have includes 50hours of cloud storage for our recordings and what’s really neat is we can record multiple recordings at once.

That being said, I really didn’t begin to take advantage of the record feature until the holiday season.  I recorded some Christmas movies off Hallmark but since the last week of December I found three movies of interest that I set to record for our New Year’s Eve movie marathon: John Wick 2, The Kingsman: The Secret Service, and The Kingsman: Golden Circle.

In addition to live TV programs, SlingTV offers on demand content which can can be simply added to our favorites to view at our convenience.  I found a movie we’ve been waiting to see on our other streaming services on demand, The Mummy with Tom Cruise and I saved it which made me giddy.

We watched all of these movies with the exception of the second Kingsman’s flick. We really liked them, too.  I don’t believe these action packed, sometimes humorous movies will disappoint you and highly recommend them for a fun night of entertainment.

Have you thought about cutting the cord so-to-speak to your cable service?

That’s it for now, I’ll leave you with some soothing jazz mewsic to enjoy with your morning coffee.

I’ll take the lead by pouring myself another cup before I head off to visit a few of my Tuesday friends – Random Tuesday Thoughts with Stacy,  Tuesday Chatter hosted by Eugenia, and Happy Tuesday with Sandee. I’ll be back tomorrow for Wild Wednesdays where just about anything goes and I hope you’ll join me!

  1. We are definitely a cord-cut family – we cut the cord quite a number of years ago when the cost kept going up and up, and we realized we never watched TV on the programming schedule, only on our own schedules (even when we had cable, we’d record everything then watch it on our schedule), so cutting the cord made so much sense. We’re FireTV, Hulu+, CBS All Access, Amazon Prime and Netflix family – and that’s more than enough. Of course during the holidays I’ve subscribed to SlingTV so I can watch the Hallmark movies while doing Christmas-y stuff, but my schedule was so busy this year, I didn’t have time, so didn’t re-up my Sling membership from last year (I love that I can cancel, then come back at will). I also looked into Frendly TV, because they also have the cloud DVR option like Sling does, and all the Hallmark channels. Plus they’re cheaper than Sling (though they do have way less channel options), but I’ll revisit both of those next year during the holidays (or when my schedule will permit me to do some much-needed binge-watching…heh!). I also renew my STARZ add-on when Outlander is back on, binge watch all the episodes then cancel until the next season…heh! I’ve done that with HBO and SHO as well – only when there’s something on there I really want to watch that isn’t on our other subscriptions that we keep active all the time. 🙂

Oooh, sorry! Didn’t mean to write a novel! 😀 Cord-cutters unite! LOL!! LOVED all your funnies – they had me laughing out loud for reals! 🙂

    1. Stacy,

Hmm, now I’m like how you handle the premium add-on channels. Maybe, that’s something we can think about doing should we want to do some binge watching as well. Thanks for putting that idea in my head. 🙂 I will look at Frendly TV out of curiosity. Thanks for passing that tidbit this way. Your long response is always welcome, my friend. I’m glad you found time to visit. Have a great day!

  2. It’s good to hear another person I know talk about Sling. We have thought about it. We need to find ways to save money. I love all those movies you mentioned. I can’t get enough of them!!! Now I just need the British accent 🙂

  3. I’ve been considering getting rid of cable. I’ll look into Sling TV and some others. I want to be sure hubby has his sports channels.

    1. Mimi,

We didn’t get SlingTV’s add-on channels like HBO, Showtime, … I’d take a look at their website to see if they have what you want and if they don’t check out YouTube TV. 🙂

  4. I only got my new TV not quite a year ago, so I’m just now exploring all the streaming possibilities out there. (Before I had a tube TV from 2004.) Cutting the cord is in the future, and not too distant in that. One of the holdups has been access to regular broadcast TV. If Sling has those channels…

    1. Liz,

We’re in a good area to get local airing quite well with rabbit ears, so that wasn’t a concern for us when choosing SlingTV. You might want to look at YouTube TV because I believe they do support local broadcast channels.

  5. Great funnies. We have Comcast which is expensive, but I justify it because it is our only entertainment expense 🙂

  6. Those were terrific funnies. We didn’t have much luck with Sling, the interface always seemed a bit wonky so we have high speed internet, antenna, Netfix and Prime Video. We don’t watch many sports so it works well for us.

  7. I’ve been patiently awaiting the demise of our current TV so I can replace it with a smart TV with Roku built in so I can take advantage of a lot of the streaming services. Finding one with Fox Sports South so I could see Braves games would be ideal. But that’s down the road a piece. I can watch a lot of the free services (Pluto, Stirr etc.) on my desktop…

    1. John,

Our plasma TV is getting old (2008) by today’s standards but she still has an excellent display and works beautifully. It’s going to be hard replace when she goes to that great electronic haven somewhere in our fair city. We have Roku and an AppleTV. It’s nice having both because sometimes one will misbehave for whatever reason, so it’s nice to have an alternative and if all else falls then we can do airplay using one our Apple devices. I don’t watch content from my computer much anymore. I just use my iPad which I can prop up on my elliptical while I get a little activity each day. 🙂 It’s amazing what you can do stream nowadays without traditional cable service.

  8. I’ve never heard of that service, but we cut cable years ago. So expensive and there wasn’t much to watch. We have Netflix and Amazon Prime. I’ll check out SlingTV.

    Love the funny.

Thank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Happy Tuesday. Big hug and lots of love. ♥

  9. Thank you so very much for visiting and for your bday wishes. It has been a lovely morning so far
breakfast at First Watch and giggling at the evolving from snowflakes.

    1. Cecila,

Your comment didn’t fall through a black hole, my spam folder got it. That’s only because this must be your first time visiting/commenting. 😉 I’m glad you found time to squeeze in a return visit on your birthday. Make it a special one now!

  10. LOL, those bears! Mom loves TV, always has. If we could get rid of cable, we would as it is so expensive and we really only need about a dozen of the channels, but we haven’t found anything good enough to replace it yet.

    1. Have mom to check into SlingTV and if that doesn’t fit, then have her to look at YouTube TV. So far, we’re very pleased with SlingTV!
