Rutherfordton, North Carolina

Posted on January 10, 2018
Nikon D7000 capture, slight photo adjustment in Pixelmator

Welcome Kittens & Dawgs! I’m still going through my camera roll revisiting last month’s Christmas outing. I took this shot in Rutherfordton which is about a 15 minute drive from last week’s featured photo shoot. I loved the decorations gracing these two quaint structures that make up the Carrier Houses Bed & Breakfast.

Next is my Wednesday Hodgepodge segment hosted by Joyce. This is an excellent way to get to know your fellow blogger and you’re invited to play alone.  Here are my responses.

1. January is National Mentoring Month. Have you ever had a mentor? Been a mentor? How would you rate the experience? I have not served as a mentor in an official capacity but aren’t we all mentors? Sometimes we are mentors without knowing that we are. Friends look to us for guidance, especially those younger than us and if we’re parents then we are to our children. Helping others to see what they already know is a satisfying feeling.

2. What current trend makes no sense to you? Men’s hair fashion. If you’re like me then you remember long hair of the 70s, then big hair of the 80s. These days you have guys with long hair who like to wear it up in a bun. What I’d like to shout to these idiots is “Seriously, dude are you trying to look like your grandma?” How can anyone think this looks good or cool or anything other than DUMB! But, we live in a society of sheep. If one person does it then everyone follows. I have an idea, why not follow that person over a cliff? Okay, not really but…you might as well you stupid heads! This trend only doesn’t make sense it annoys me. Can you tell?

3. I saw a cartoon on Facebook highlighting a few ‘weird’ things that make you happy as an adult. The list included-writing with a nice pen, having plans canceled, freshly cleaned sheets, eating the corner brownie, cleaning the dryer lint screen, and sipping coffee in that brief time before anyone else wakes up. (Credit for the cartoon goes here) Of the ‘weird’ things listed which one makes you happiest? What is one more ‘weird’ thing you’d add to the list?  Slipping beneath freshly laundered sheets always brings a smile to my face. Sometimes if I stretch the imagination I can smell that line dried scent. I do not line dry anything but if I had a bit of property then I’d love to have a clothesline to hang things in warm weather.

4. What’s the last good thing you ate? Last night for dessert, I had a slice of Homemade Black Walnut cake. It was good!

5. Describe life in your 20’s in one sentence. During my 20s, I felt conflicted with who I was and what I wanted but by the time I turned 27 I felt a peace with where I was in my life.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  Just down the street from The Carrier Houses Bed & Breakfast (featured photograph) is the Rutherfordton courthouse.  According to their website, it’s the largest Christmas tree in North Carolina.  It wasn’t dark enough for the lights to show but you can see the string of lights are lit. The star is on as well but against the sky it’s not easily seen with the eye and it definitely didn’t pick up in my photograph. Downtown Rutherfordton is a lovely, quaint area and I do want to go back during the Christmas season again…maybe at night. 😉

I captured this photo with my iPhone 8, then slightly adjusted the exposure in Pixelmator.

Thanks for dropping by, folks. Have a good day and I hope you’ll visit me tomorrow for Thursday Two Questions (#T2Q)!

      Linda,

I love the whole area surrounding us. There’s always so much to see and do that it amazes me even after nearly four decades of living in East Tennessee.

      Lisa,

It was a bit cloudy in Rutherfordton but earlier in the day the sky was a pretty blue. At least it didn’t rain on us. It was a nice way to spend the Friday before Christmas and this tiny town was not busy at all. Although there traffic on the streets, it wasn’t bustling and most shops were closed. I guess everyone was anxious to get home to begin the long holiday weekend. 🙂 Thanks for visiting!

I am hopping over from the Hodgepodge today and enjoyed your answers. I am very lucky to have a small back garden where I can hang my laundry out to dry. Like you, I love that line dried scent on my clothes. Even better when it’s sheets and bedding!

Rutherford looks like a great place to visit (or even live). My sons put their hair up in buns when they are working food service, but not otherwise. The buns are mostly covered by their hats, too. It’s just for keeping hair out of the way, of course.

Your sons have a good reason to do it but it drives me bonkers just to see guys wearing man buns, you know? What’s the since in having long hair if you keep it up? Just seems crazy to me.

The picture of the B & B looks very inviting and festive. I am sick of men with great hair shaving their head plus that man bun is beyond stupid. I want to show them grandma from the Looney Tunes who always had a bun. I also hate the pants half off their butt, they always look like they dropped a load. Fresh sheets always feels good and I always look forward to my O.J. and soda water-so thirst quenching.

      Birgit,

I’m not a fan of shaved heads, either. I get why a man with balding issues would do this but when you see these young guys in their 20s, it’s just stupid. Men who put their hair in a bun is doubly stupid. I can take the bald look over the granny loo any day. Pants that ride to the knees is another dumb, dumb trend. Now, girls are doin’ something similar. I noticed some of the hip-hop chicks exposing the top of their underwear and I’m thinking, “Well…we don’t want to be outdone by the boys now, do we?” Look, girls, you don’t have to prove anything by doing this crazy stuff it’s saying “I’m not good enough to be me. I’ve gotta imitate the guys to be worthy of acceptance.” Just stop it already and love being a girl! If God wanted you to be a boy then he would’ve made you a boy. Got it? Sorry, I got carried away. 😀 I think cold OJ by itself is a great thirst quencher. We used to talk OJ with us when we’d ride bikes around Cades Cove in the Smoky’s. It’s so delicious and hits the spot every time.

      AJ,

Restoring a Victorian home is ambitious. There’s a Victorian home on the market that I really like but I’m not sure if buying a home with an upstairs and no basement is something I’d be content with for the rest of my life. I would like to physically walk through it to see how it stirs me, though. I guess if I can convince DH then we’ll contact the realtor for a showing. 🙂

      Sandee,

Thanks for stopping by for a peek at my photos. I have no idea what’s up with the “man bun”. It’s the stupidest thing ever. I think it’s to show how in touch they are with their feminine side. Oh, please! I’m so tired of men acting like women and women acting like men. Can’t we get back to the good old days just a little? If you and the rest of the women out there are like me then you don’t want a girlie man, you want a manly man. It doesn’t mean he’s not sensitive but he doesn’t look or act like a woman and I know most “real” men want a woman who looks and acts like a woman, instead of a lumberjack. Women are snookered into thinking to be equal to men they have to act like them but all this is really telling women is, you’re not good enough the way you are! In God’s eyes, men and women are equal. We each have different sets of assets and when you put men & women together then they make an unstoppable team. All this equality talk is manmade. We should be listening to God people because if we do then none of this would be a problem. Oops, I think I got a bit of rant there. lol Oh yeah, I do have to agree the man bun is way worse looking than grandma’s bun. What idiots!

      Ellen,

Once upon a time, DH had a mustache and for years I liked it. About the time our second daughter was two, he shaved it off. I’m not sure but he got rid of it and I’m actually glad that he did. I prefer seeing a man’s face without the hair. I, especially do not like a full beard. Some athletes have a face full of hair and I’m thinking that guy looks Amish or Logger or something but not an athlete. lol

    Hi, Cathy!

I have come to chat with you again, dear friend. Rutherfordton, one of the oldest towns in Western North Carolina (according to their official site) is a rather difficult, cumbersome name to pronounce, don’t you think? I admire the picture you took of the Carrier Houses B & B. I’d love to stay there someday.

A current trend that makes no sense to me is ink – tattoos. Call me old fashioned, but I think people, especially young women, ruin their appearance with excessive tattooing. Some of it is tasteful and artistic and doesn’t bother me as much, but a lot of it is ugly and makes a negative statement. Some people choose to get an entire “suit” of tattoos. I just don’t get it.

My twenties were divided into two parts, first as a married man and later as a swinging bachelor. (Then came Mrs. Shady #2.)

When I clicked to enlarge, I was able to see the lights on that gigantic Christmas tree. Imagine it standing in your living room next December! 🙂

Enjoy your Wednesday, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

To answer your question, yes pronouncing Rutherfordton is a bit difficult to roll off the tongue and I thought it was just me. 🙂 I like the appearance of B&Bs but I don’t have much desire to stay in one, though. Of course, I don’t like the idea of staying in hotels anymore with the Bed Bug epidemic occurring again. I don’t know how this is prevented but I hope someone figures out how to squash the problem forever. I agree with you about tattoos. I don’t like it when anyone defaces his/her body with lots of ink. I don’t see art, I see someone destroying God’s masterpiece. I also hate body piercings, especially of the face and those huge disc-like thingies placed in the earlobe. Oh, that’s just hideous! There’s nothing pretty about it and it actually makes me hurt to look at it. It’s difficult to hold a conversation with these sorts of people. The only person who would dare put THAT Christmas tree in his home is Clark Griswold. lol Thanks for visiting, my friend!
