Monday's Music Moves Me

Roy, Steve, Robert, and James

Thank you for including me in your Monday, kittens & dawgs! I invite you to hit the dance floor with the M4 (borrowed from John at The Sound of One Hand Typing) gang XmasDolly, Stacy, Colette , and little ole me! This week’s theme is Male Names Song Titles/Lyrics.

[tweetthis]Tell a friend & hit the dance floor with “Male Name Song Titles/Lyrics” #music with the #4M gals! @xmasdolly [/tweetthis]

I had some obvious first song picks with this week’s theme which I wanted to use but pretty certain they’ll get a lot of play time from others, so I began thinking of a theme within the theme coming up with songs inspired by or written about male celebrities.

I’m wind things down in another direction with my theme within a theme by sharing a playlist of songs written about male celebrities.

I went with the artists’ songs I most enjoyed that I found in this article and according to the artists wrote with these entertainers in mind.

  1. No Doubt, “Don’t Speak” (Tony Kanal)
  2. Selena Gomez, “The Heart Wants What It Wants” (Justin Bieber)
  3. Taylor Swift, “Style” (Harry Styles)
  4. Sheryl Crow, “My Favorite Mistake” (Eric Clapton)
  5. Taylor Swift, “All Too Well” (Jake Gyllenhaal)
  6. Britney Spears, “Everytime” (Justin Timberlake)
  7. Taylor Swift, “Last Kiss” (Joe Jonas)
  8. Madonna, “Miles Away” (Guy Ritchie)
  9. Carly Simon, “You’re So Vain” Devid Geffen UPDATE: Per Wikipedia song is NOT about Geffen. Part of the song IS about Warren Beatty and at least two other unknown men.

Can you share a song(s) not already named with today’s theme? Leave your “male name song titles/lyrics picks in comments! Who knows maybe I’ll do a future post with your suggestions. 😉

Most of the summer…well pretty much of all of summer I’ve been unofficially off the blogging radar but it’s official now. I’m away from Blogosphere until after Labor Day but… I am hitting the dance floor each week. I can’t let my co-hosts and you down to get your week hoping now, can I? I’ll see ya next week for “your choice” song picks with Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me!

This is great! Of course Taylor Swift would be part of this since she seems to have most of her songs revolve around some guy who broke her achy breaky heart. Enjoy the time away and make sure you wear good shoes when dancing..no blisters:)

Hey Cathy! Finally making the rounds to this week’s (soon to be last week’s!) 4M. Thanks for your patience. Loved your theme within a theme: what a great idea!! And some of these were completely new to me. I thought I knew just about every Elton John song but I don’t ever remember hearing Roy Rogers! So that was fun. And never heard Robert DeNiro’s Waiting either! Love the Eagles’ James Dean. Love ALL Eagles songs. They were definitely were a main thread in the fabric of what makes up my growing up tapestry.

And that was a very cool playlist. I didn’t know that most of those songs were about male celebrities (except of course for Taylor Swift’s songs. She’s famous for writing about her exes — an example of when it actually pays off to be promiscuous! She’s so rich!! 🙂 )
I LOVE Don’t Speak by No Doubt. I could play that song over and over. Thanks for sharing all that great new-to-me information.

    Excellent post, my friend!
Hey, I’m skipping out on this coming Monday’s 4M. Just have to get caught up on my own stuff after getting my mom moved here and settled into her new place. It was a crazy month these last weeks but it was great to have my brother and sister-in-law here for two weeks and I’m beyond thrilled that my Mom is now here. I don’t have to worry so much about her being 1400 miles away!

    See you in 2 weeks…
    XOXO

      Michele,

Glad you made it around for a dance with me! I’m glad things are settling down a bit with your mom’s move and I know how excited you’re having so much closer to you now. I didn’t realize there were that many miles between you guys. Are you on the west coast? I can’t keep these things straight! Anywho, so happy you liked my post. It was fun doing something a little different. We’ll miss you on Monday but I certainly understand. Just do whatcha gotta do and join in when you can, my friend! 🙂

Great picks. I never thought about how many songs were written about men. I love Elton John, have Sheryl Crow (and Brad Pitt) in my college year book, and there’s “No Doubt” that you’d find a song about James Dean.

Yes, I’m late, too. I did retire in May but took on a two hour a day teaching job at a private school. Last week, and part of this one, was a full time inservice plus getting the new year together is always time consuming (as in more than two hours a day).

    • Cathy Kennedy

      John,

I know nothing of celebrity’s hook ups past or present generally. You and Debbie seemed shocked Carly’s song was about Mick, so I went to my second reliable Internet source, Wikipedia, accordingly says Simon reported in 1983 that the song isn’t about MJ and contributed uncredited backing vocals to the song. Also, Simon’s didn’t know Geffen at the time she wrote the song in 1971 but there is unspecified David whispered in the tune. This tidbit about the song was given, though. “Simon, promoting her about-to-be-published memoir, said, “I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren (Beatty)” and added that while “Warren thinks the whole thing is about him,” he is the subject of that verse only, with the remainder of the song referring to two other, still unnamed men.” I never knew the song was referencing three men. I always thought it was one person but I had no clue who let along three. Maybe, one day Carly will reveal the other two names! She sure has kept it a secret long enough. 🙂 One more thing I stumbled on is this link where she tells there WAS a 4th verse to this song that she omitted, adding more mystery and a 4th guy to the song!

  • Debbie D.

That was a fun musical interlude, Cathy. All of those songs were unfamiliar to me. My favourite of the bunch is “Steve McQueen”. Sheryl really rocks it! 😀 Looking at your playlist further down, I’d always heard that “You’re So Vain’ was about Mick Jagger. Here’s a bit of trivia for you: David Geffen is a movie producer now (Dreamworks SKG), but he used to be a record producer. He even dated Cher, but came “out of the closet” after that. No reflection on her, I assume. 😉

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Debbie,

Great to see you on the dance floor! I believe I read somewhere of the misconception that “You’re So Vain” was thought to be about Mick Jagger. That’s interesting that Geffen is now in the movie industry but did you know in a Forbes magazine article I learned that he dropped out of college and used a fake UCLA degree to land a mailroom job at the William Morris Agency? The same article states his net worth at $7.8B! That’s a hunk of change! 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ellen,

I didn’t know Sheryl and Eric had a relationship at one point either. I first thought the song would be about Lance Armstrong. Thanks for stopping by for a dance!

  • Mary B

    Cathy

I LOVE what you did with the theme! It’s always fun to think outside the box, right? Great selections today, and even a few that I hadn’t heard of – and that’s always a plus for me! Thanks for the dance!

    ~Mary

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mary,

Whoo-hoo, I’m always glad to hear when I introduce new mewsic to someone tune savvy as you! Well, I knew there would be a lot of the same songs to repeat and wanted something different. However, I was surprised there wasn’t as many stepping of the toes with this theme than I first thought, though. Most brought something new to the dance floor this week. Have a great week, my friend!

  • scr4pl80

Some of these I had never heard before. Thanks for introducing them. I knew about Taylor Swift’s many songs about exes. She seems a bit promiscuous – LOL. Happy Monday to you.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Janet,

I knew Taylor Swift is famous for writing about her exes after Michael Foxx’s comment regarding his son dating her. I’d say a lot of songwriters use their life experiences for inspiration but don’t we all do that? I mean that’s poetics pull their great works from their souls careful or troubled. Oh, yes Taylor is a bit promiscuous! The sad truth many youngsters are way too sexually active. Sex isn’t guarded as special anymore and as common as shaking hands.

  • XmasDolly

Way ta go Cathy! I applaud you! Great job, and wow many tunes I haven’t heard in forever. Where have I been? Anyway about the song Elton John did “Daniel”. I looked it up & here’s a good one for you, “Bernie Taupin called this “the most misinterpreted song we’ve ever written,” saying he’s heard it called a gay anthem and a song about a family dispute.” Go figure, but thanks for the dances & oh my favorite is Sheryl Crow!!! Have a rockin’ week my friend! BIG HUGS!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Marie,

Yes, I read about the misinterpretation of the song. I didn’t know what a homosexual was when I was a kid even when I someone spoke of Elton’s sexuality I had no clue what that meant, so the words took the sorrows of the war from my heart and somehow I knew the song was written about a hero returning home from the Vietnam. Thanks for dancing with me today, my friend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Patrick,

I think it was someone on this hop that introduce “Don’t Speak” to me years ago. I really didn’t know who Gwen Stefani was until then. I know I was living under rock! Thanks for visiting today.

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

I hope you and DH are having a super summer, dear friend! It’s great to see you today.

You really did your homework again this week, presenting a post filled with new-to-me songs. I vaguely recall the MTV station where I worked playing Bananarama’s “Robert De Niro” video. Other than that, all the rest of the songs with male celebrity names in the title are new to me. I very much enjoyed Sheryl Crow’s video which pays homage to the famous car chase scene in the Steve McQueen hit movie Bullitt. From a purely mewsical standpoint, I most liked that song along with the James Dean tribute by the Eagles.

Leave it to you to delve deeper and find a great list of songs written about male celebs. Seems Taylor Swift was inspired to do so quite often in her career. I enjoyed listening to them all. Going in, I was only familiar with three of them: the song about Bieber recorded by Selena Gomez, the one by Madonna and, perhaps the most famous of all, “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon.

Great job, Cathy – very entertaining. Have a wonderful week, dear friend!

      Tom,

I goofed earlier when replying to Lee and put it under your response somehow OR maybe that was something funky that WordPress decided to do. Oh well, I deleted and put it where it belongs. lol I appreciate you taking the time to visit this morning and am delighted to bring some new tunes to your ear. We have Steve McQueen’s movie, “Bullitt” but believe it or not, I wasn’t all that crazy about it. I agree Eagle’s “James Dean” song is the best but I did rather enjoy Elton John’s “Roy Rogers”. Maybe that’s because of sentimentality more than anything because we used to watch a lot of the old Roy Rogers’ films with the kids when they were small. I wasn’t at all familiar with who the artists’ lost loves in the songs on my playlist. I never was one to be in the who when it comes to celebrities. 🙂 I’ll be over to see you next. Have a great day, my friend! PS: Yes, DH and I are enjoying our summer. It’s been nice to take it easy doing whatever I want without the stress of “having” to do things in Blogosphere right now.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Lee, Thanks for the contribution by Prefab Sprout. I do not remember Faron Young or the song PS references in their song, “It’s Four in the Morning”. Naturally, I had to Google Young and listened to the song mentioned in the song. I like the quality and style of his voice which is rather mellow and smooth. I hated reading that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot, though. It seemed he had some serious medical conditions (emphysema and prostate surgery). I wonder if depression over his health pushed him over the edge? That’s just super sad! Thanks for visiting and have a good week, my friend!
