Tickle Me Tuesdays

Pre-Groundhog Day humor, songs from the movie, and my Tuesday4 ‘Back to School’ responses.

We’ve entered the second month of the new year.  Tomorrow is Groundhog Day.  The eyes of the nation is expected to be on Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania as its most famous resident predicts the weather outcome for the next six weeks.  Can we expect more wintry weather or will we have an early spring?  We shall have to wait to see.

This tradition at Gobbler’s Knob has been a fun favorite over the years and with the 1993 release of Groundhog Day the popularity for that little corner of PA exploded.  Last year, we watched the celebration and prediction air.  Even with the pandemic, they found away around it to keep folks interest in their tiny hamlet and Phil.  It looked like a lot of fun and if it weren’t for the fact that it’s so darn cold and possibly snowy in Punxsutawney then I’d love to take part in the festivities.  However, the realization is to travel that distance and to be in misery, then the idea grows less appealing.

I thought it would be great fun to build a playlist of the songs used in the movie for my top ten picks but it appears there are only 8 song titles and since I ran short I then decided to share the soundtrack at the very end. Click play to enjoy while you continue reading. 😉

Song titles source credit

A few of the songs listed on the playlist like tracks 4 and 6 slip my memory and I can’t place the movie scene with the exception of 6 possibly where McDowell and Murray are dining.  The source credit says these were a part of the film and other websites also reference the same ones, so I guess they did and I have no reason to doubt the source.

We can’t have a Tickle Me Tuesday segment without some funnies, so how about a little Groundhog Day humor?

“At a girl, Maxine!”
Dirty Harry ain’t gonna take any chances.
This is just too cute and so true.
That’s fine by me, Phil. Stay in your burrow until next year.

In a recent previous post, I shared my responses to last week’s Tuesday 4 questions.  Today, I remembered to include this segment.  Annie is taking us “Back to School” with today’s set.

  1. You are  back in high school… what are you doing after school lately? If I’m back in school in rural West Virginia like I was the first time around then there is little to do. Forget hanging at the mall or going to a movie.  That requires a long drive. I’d say I’d be doing close to what I did 40 years ago, either watch a little afternoon TV or hang at a girlfriend’s house nearby but only if I had my assigned chores done first.
  2. Do you do homework early or late? Do you really study?  I would tackle my homework straight away, so I can enjoy the rest of my afternoon. Oh sure I studied and studied because assuming my brain works like it did eons ago I will need all the time in the world to cram testing material into my noggin’. A lot of good it’ll do as I’m sure history would repeat itself with my brain freezing up causing me to get barely passing grades. Or, maybe not….if I have the self confidence that I have now doing my studies then I might actually be an honor student. 🙂
  3. a. Do you go to the games? Football? Basketball.. what is your favorite to attend?  b. Do you go to the dances? Prom? (what’d you wear?) a. If I were in school today in the same rural community of WV, the school I attended 40-years ago has since merged with another making it one of those super schools for the area.  This means I would be able to attend games a little easier, especially those at home.  Assuming once again, my preferences for now played into the picture then I’d most certainly would go to the football games.  b. Absolutely, I’d go to my school dance or prom. As boring as any of them are, it’s still a part of the whole school experience and shouldn’t be missed. Assuming I could get away with what I wanted to wear, then I’d probably would wear a pretty sparkly short dress with a cut out back.
  4. Lunch!  What are we having today?   What is your favorite lunch?  These questions are difficult for me to answer because the things most people were privy to do in the school years didn’t apply to me because of my location.  In high school, I usually kept lunch very simple and I’m sure even today I’d do the same thing.  I’d probably grab a soda and a package of snack crackers or chips from the vending machine.  I suppose my favorite lunch would be either burgers & fries or pizza.  That sounds petty good to me.

In southern West Virginia where I grew up today there’s a tiny bit more for kids to do but it’s nothing like what kids in Knoxville or surrounding communities have within a few minutes drive. Not to mention kids who have a drivers license has their own car or access to mom or dads around here. Despite not having these things growing up, I survived those years somehow.  🙂

Just a reminder, kiddies, earlier this morning my latest James Bond theme song “A View To A Kill BOTB showdown” published. If yo have a few minutes to spare, I hope you’ll click over to cast your vote for your favorite cover artist. This is CAAC signing off coming up next is the linky party where just about anything goes with Wild Wednesdays ! 😉

I enjoyed your answers! I live in the city and high school was about 20 blocks away. My dad drove us to school and we walked home the first year. I drove after that. My grandson starts high school next year and is asking how he is getting there. I like your retro girls!

This is a great post for Groundhog Day and this movie is perfect. I enjoyed listening to all the songs including that polka. I danced to that many times at weddings. The cartoons are funny and the [pussy cat is so sweet. I would hate having to be back in high school..blecchhh. I am the opposite of you, I would want to get away from school quickly so I could watch Gilligan’s island and Lost In Space. I would look at the homework but I would not open the books until I had to. I would attend the dances now and dance my heart away and I would wear a sequined dress or pantsuit…sequined. I never ate lunch in the cafeteria so I never ate the crap they served. I always enjoyed the lunch my mom gave and ate somewhere else.

    Hi again, Cathy!

Yessum, I got to know about Punxsutawney Phil at an early age, having grown up in Central PA. When I worked in TV news in the Keystone State, our news crew always covered the annual prognostication ceremony. I also enjoyed the movie Groundhog Day. Bill Murray never disappoints me. His character in the film Kingpin is also hilarious. I enjoyed reviewing the soundtrack songs. How well I remember the “Pennsylvania Polka” from childhood. “You Don’t Know Me” is one of my favorites by Ray Charles. During my years as a record collector, I owned a copy of that single. It was refreshing to hear Nat King Cole do an up tempo number instead of the ballads he is best known for singing.

I enjoyed your Sillies. The one in which Phil reveals himself to be a hardcore Steelers fan is a good one. I also appreciated your responses to the Back to School questions. Answer #2 resonates with me. Like you, I attacked my homework right away so that I could enjoy my free time without it hanging over my head. I was also like you in that I had difficulty taking tests. I am sure we as the confident adults we are today would have a much better go if it now. I can picture you as the prom queen, dear friend. I am also forming a clear picture of your youth in rural WV. You made the most of what little there was to do in your community and you developed into a fine citizen and outstanding wife. You should feel proud of yourself for finding happiness with less.

I enjoyed today’s double dose of entertainment, dear friend Cathy. Have a great day and I’ll see you tamale!
