Battle of the Bands

More Than A Feeling #BOTB showdown #music #celebrate

The group leader, Tom Scholz, inspired by 1967 song Walk Away Renee wrote Boston’s first single in his basement studio while working at Polaroid before its release five years later that was a near instant hit. This one song launched Boston’s career into orbit.

Now to get this showdown under way and just so you’ll know, Boston is NOT included in the vote.

The first contender originally formed in Germany by producer Frank Farian. The group is made of a male trio: Marty Cintron and twin brothers, Ariel and Gabriel Hernández. This group is listed in the POP, Eurodance, and Pop dance genre. Give a listen to No Mercy.

The next group featured is a pop punk band from Ohio made of four person: Omar Zehery, Nick Thompson, Nate Van Dame, Kevin Mahoney, and David Bermosk called Hit The Lights.

I need to do a second or third playback of each of these bands before I know whose getting my vote. Do you know which band you like the best? Is it No Mercy or Hit The Lights?

I’m not using the polling widget this time because last time it didn’t match the real count given in comments. sigh So, please tell me in comments who gets your vote and if you wanna you can share the particulars of why your pick got named.

The fun continues with more epic battles underway below.

I invite you to visit, Stephen (at the top of the list), if you’d like to know how this works and/or ask how to join all this madness fun.

This month, I’m pitching in temporarily as co-host of Monday’s Music Moves Me (4M). One of the XmasDolly’s regulars is on vacation and asked if I can fill in. With summer blog traffic being slow and my hands full with repairing broken links/video and other fixes on my site, then I’m combing similar posts. I will share the results of this battle on Monday, July 25th. Be sure to mark your calendar and stop by to see who is named the WiNnEr!

[tweetthis]Who gets your #vote No Mercy or Hit The Lights singing Boston’s More Than A Feeling? It’s up to you who wins! #BoTB[/tweetthis]

It’s time to dance with the 4M crew! I just got the word from XmasDolly this week’s theme is going to be another freebie pick. Sounds like my BoTB song selection is a perfect fit. So, I’m gonna keep with Boston Greatest Hits! Feel to continue listening to all tracks while you do your house chores, surf the net, or write today’s blog post. Oh yeah, if you feel like chair boogieing or getting to your feet then let the music move you, baby!

You’re invited to link your music post below and if you’re new to Monday’s Music Moves Me, then don’t forget to add the 4M button to you site and link back to XmasDolly’s site. Let’s get the party on the road!

1FFBadgeThis is a longer than usual post, but I’m squeezing things in with the hopes of finding a good balance once I get my repairs done on my site. I wanted to join in the NEW Friendly Fill-ins ever since I noticed McGuffy’s Reader kicked it off after Hilary discontinued her Friday Fill-ins.

The Friendly Fill-Ins are four fun and easy statements to complete. Ellen of 15andmeowing provides the first two statements and the final two are offered by myself. We try to make sure they will be interesting to both answer and share. On Friday, the linky will be posted at or about 12:00 AM. Please come back, link up, and share your thoughts!

Week 10: July 15, 2016 Fill-ins:

  1. I prefer cake, pie, and cookies to candy; however, I wouldn’t turn it down.
  2. Concentrating on learning something new recently was much harder than I expected. (Motherhood fried my brain, but I think it’s slowly reconnecting.)

  3. One way that I relax is watch TV.

  4. My DH always makes me smile.

Don’t forget to leave your vote in comments. This is Curious as a Cathy signing off with have a bandtastic day and a list of my Celebrate the Small Things with host, Lexa Cain for this week.

I Celebrate…

  • I have a good Daddy.
  • That Daddys are humans just like the rest of us.
  • His love for me despite my imperfections.
  • My daddy’s 78th birthday today. You rock, Pops!

I love, love, love Boston! Thanks for the great share.

Also, 1. I prefer high carb treats (chips, cookies, etc.); however, I will have to turn them down or control a slight intake because I’m scheduled to attend a class on how to eat as a Diabetic in about an hour, and I know these things will be poo pooed..

    2. Concentrating on learning something new recently was much harder than I expected. (Learning what I need to do to make my store more profitable was overwhelming.)

    3. One way that I relax is watch TV. Me, too.

    4. My doggy friends always make me smile.

    I Celebrate…

My daughter coming home from a year long stay in Israel.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Joyce, Boston is a fabulous group. I’m glad you enjoyed the music. Who doesn’t like high carbs? But, what a bummer to have to deal with diabetes! My parents have type II and this is one of my greatest fears. This is why I’m somewhat paranoid about my weight. I know that’s just one factor to consider, but it’s the obvious one to keep in line. I’m trying to learn coding again. I did programming in college eons ago and thought why not learn the new stuff with the hopes of writing a nifty app. That could be so cool! Oh, WOW your daughter has been in Israel for a year! How come? Do you have family there? Seeing the Holy Land would be an awesome experience, but with all the turmoil in the Middle East it’s not safe for Americans. If that’s not bad enough, my paranoia and fear of flying would keep me from doing something like that anyhow. All I can do is dream about faraway places. Thanks for visiting my friend. Have a good week and the best of luck getting your educational store revamped!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Claudia, learning something new is rewarding. I just have to recondition my mind for learning. Motherhood has given me a brain handicap of sorts and it’s hard to shake. lol

  • Kisma

Happy Birthday to your dad! I don’t need to listen to the sounds to know its NO MERCY hands down. I love their version of this.

    Happy Monday friend!

  • Stacy Uncorked

First of all, Happy Birthday to your daddy! Hope he had an extra enjoyable day. 🙂

I’m gonna have to go with No Mercy – like others have said, I appreciated they stayed true to the original – the other one seemed to speed it up a beat too much. 😉

I haven’t done Friday Fill-Ins in an eon or longer! I might have to join in next week, I want to start blogging more than 2 days a week. Gotta get back to some extra fun! 🙂

Thanks for helping out this month – you ROCK! 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

Stacy, I’m always happy to help co-host anytime you guys need me. No Mercy is stealing the show! This is the first time in years I’ve played along in the Friday Fill-Ins. McGuffy took this over in recent months and this is my first time joining in with her. She’d love to have you play along! Thanks for popping in to dance and for the bday wishes for Daddy. I’m hopping over to listen to your fabulous dance picks!

  • stevebethere

Good tunes I was only listening to More Than A Feeling on the radio the other day always loved that.

A very happy birthday to your dad from me 🙂

Have a birthdaytastic day Cathy 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

Steve, What a fun coincidence I played a song you listened to on the radio recently! lol Too bad you didn’t vote for your favorite version between the two cover bands, but it’s not too late! Anywho, tThanks for the bday wishes to my daddy and now it’s time to dance over to your place! 🙂

        • Cathy Kennedy

The way it works is this…I features Boston’s song for reference only then ask folks to chose between No Mercy and Hit The Lights. All votes are recorded in comments. Some people like sharing why they picked their favorite and some don’t. Unfortunately, Boston isn’t included in the voting. I generally do not use the original artist against another band because they’d get total runaway victory every time. Of course, it appears that’s happening between the two cover artists I picked. Lol Thanks for coming back by to let me know and if you want to change your vote then you’re welcome; otherwise Boston doesn’t count. ?

  • Chris

Hit The Lights for sure. I love pop-punk/emo/alternative, so that was an easy choice. Have you heard of the Punk Goes Pop albums? Its pretty much the only way I’ll listen to Top 40 🙂

The No Mercy version was interesting. Not bad at all, but a distance 2nd for me. Good idea to not include the original; I would have had a hard time voting against it and your other readers probably would have given Boston an easy victory (nothing wrong with that, says this Red Sox fan haha)

    • Cathy Kennedy

Chris, I’m not a pop punk rock fan generally, but I like Hit The Lights rendition of this classic. I don’t know if I like it well enough to give them my vote yet. I still need to go back to listen to both artists a couple of times before making decision. It was great having you pop over for a visit/vote! Next stop, your place!

  • lexacain

I’m wishing your father a very happy birthday! It’s so great the two of you get along so well. Have a wonderful weekend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Lexa, Thanks! It wasn’t always so that Daddy and I got along. It was mainly my fault. Failure to see that my daddy was human and that everyone makes mistakes blind sided me for years. Thankfully I came to my senses. 🙂

  • McGuffy Ann

My favourite Boston song was, “Foreplay / Long Time”. I was in high school, and have such great memories of that time. I love the episode of “The Middle” that involves the song, More Than a Feeling”. I love that show.

Cathy, I am so glad you are here! I agree with you on politics. We need strong, intelligent people who can be vocal in a positive way.

I have had people that I thought were my friend shut me out because I would not agree. She never went through things that I have, but felt I do not “get it”. I get it; I live it.

Thanks, Cathy. You go for it. I agree with your beliefs. Hugs!

    • Cathy Kennedy

McGuffy Ann, I found people who are generally conservative politically don’t get offended by other people’s views. It’s often times liberal minded people who are narrow sighted and easier to ruffle. That person who you thought was your friend clearly wasn’t, if she got that upset. I appreciate you stopping by for a visit, dear. Have a good weekend!

  • Myke Todd

Hit The Lights… Both were really enjoyable.

On the night before I got married, Boston’s version of this song played on the radio, as I was alone in my house. For some reason, that memory has stayed with me, even until today.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Myke, I link certain memories with songs. Isn’t that interesting how the brain does that? I don’t recall any music on the eve of my wedding other than at our dress rehearsal. By the time I got home I was exhausted and more than ready for bed. lol Oh well, thanks for stopping by and for sharing your memories!

  • Lori L MacLaughlin

    Happy Birthday to your Dad!
Love Boston’s music! I’d have to vote for No Mercy. The other version is too fast and I just didn’t care for it as much. Have a great weekend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Lori, thank you for popping over for a visit. I’m finding it a bit difficult to keep up with blog hopping these days and am playing catch up. I love it when non-BoTBers play along, thanks for casting a vote for No Mercy. Now, I’m coming to see you.

  • Mary B

LOVE LOVE LOVE this song! and I really like No Mercy’s version of this song as well. Happy Birthday to your Daddy.

  • Tamara Narayan

Happy Birthday to your dad. Dad’s are human. We need to think about that in our house. My husband gets picked on all the time when he doesn’t do things exactly like I would.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Tamara, Dads get hit way too hard and I’m guilty of whining too much about my daddy’s short comings to see the good. Sometimes it takes being a parent to realize these truths. Thanks for stopping by for a visit. 😉

  • greyzoned/angelsbark

I love this song! It brings back so many memories!!! Wow.
Both versions were good but I liked No Mercy’s version better than Hit the Lights so please give my vote to No Mercy. It stayed very close to the original, moreso than Hit the Lights.

Great battle! Thanks for featuring this song. It really took me back!

    Michele at Angels Bark

    • Cathy Kennedy

Michele, glad you enjoyed my BoTB featured song. It’s a classic 80s hit. I have you down for No Mercy. Thanks for voting. I’ll be by your niche soon!

  • D-FensDogG

    CATHY ~
The No Mercy version was so much like the Boston original that, to me, this Battle seemed nearly like Boston Vs. Hit The Lights.

And in a case like that, well, my vote has to go to Boston (impersonated by NO MERCY).

    • Cathy Kennedy

Stephen, The Boston impersonators are taking this battle by storm it seems. Geez, two showdowns where one band is running the show completely. Gotcha vote for No Mercy! It’s time to listen to your pick this round.

  • pilch92

I definitely prefer the No Mercy version, the other one was not my style. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, nice answers. I am not a mother, but as I age, I am finding it harder to learn anything or remember anything. Have a great weekend. I want to go get a cookie now 🙂

  • Birgit

I give it to No Mercy because I like his singing better and the guitar which put a nice spin on this classic. Hit The Lights was too one note in a way. I didn’t like his screaming voice…sounded forced to me. Happy Birthday to your dad! Love your answers….TV is always nice to relax with especially when watching a movie…of course I would say that.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Birgit, thank you for the bday wishes for Daddy. Yeah, I knew you could relate to TV watching as a way to unwind. lol I’m glad you came by to vote in BoTB. I have you down for No Mercy. Popping over to see you now.

  • John Holton

I really liked No Mercy’s version of this, with the (sounds like) nylon-string guitar solo starting at about 2:28. It’s the same solo as in the original, but a much different sound. I didn’t dislike Hit The Lights’ version, but I liked No Mercy’s better, so give my vote to them.

    • Cathy Kennedy

John, it’s beginning to look a repeat of my last battle with the votes leaning toward one side. I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing at times. I think I prefer when I get the artists more evenly matched up making it a wee bit difficult for y’all. Oh well, thank your vote. I’m adding another tally to No Mercy. Heading over to your place now.

  • Jeffrey Scott

It was interesting what the second group did with this song. But it was a little too fast for me. The first band had me tapping my foot along. So they get my vote.
    Vote – No Mercy

    • Cathy Kennedy

Gotcha down for No Mercy, Jeffrey. Thanks for hopping over to play along. Now, it’s time for me to boogie over to listen to your BoTB selections!

  • Suzanne Gunter McClendon

Happy birthday to your daddy. Give him an extra big hug, Cathy. Are you writing down his stories?

I think that motherhood is probably the #1 brain fryer! After 30 years of being a mama, I can’t hold a thought any more. haha

I enjoyed your Friendly Fill-ins answers. Have a blessed day!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Suzanne, Thanks for the birthday wishes for Daddy. I couldn’t see him today. They live in Virginia, but I spoke with him and it’s always good to talk with him. Oh definitely motherhood is a brain fryer. The good news I’m rebounding kinda sorta now that they are all out of the house. lol Thanks for visiting, next stop your place!

      • Suzanne Gunter McClendon

You’re welcome, Cathy. I’m sorry that you couldn’t see your daddy today, but very glad that you got to speak to him. I miss my daddy something fierce and it makes me happy when I hear other folks can still tell their daddies happy birthday. 🙂
I am glad your brain is rebounding. I think mine is getting worse!
I have this McClendon Villa here at WordPress, but still have PS Annie!, too. 🙂 Have a blessed weekend!

        • Cathy Kennedy

Ahh, thanks for sharing the tidbit about your two blogs. Oh, no I hope your brain makes a come back quick! Sometimes I feel my brain is slipping two steps back for every step I take forward. I guess I’m a work-in-progress where this goes. lol

    • Cathy Kennedy

David, yep, mental illness is inherited from kids! I’m telling you there was a time or two I felt like DH was going to have to have me committed. lol The house is empty now for three years and I’m making wonderful process in my recovery. 😀 Thanks for stopping by. I’m off to check out what’s going on at your place!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Noah, thanks for weighing in today’s battle of Boston’s cover song More Than A Feeling. I got you down for No Mercy. Both bands are good, NOT Boston good, but worthy to consider. It’s great seeing you today. Next stop, your place!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Janie, thanks for the birthday wishes to my daddy. 🙂 Gotcha down for HTL this round. You’re right No Mercy sound a bit like Boston. Thanks for playing along, now to hop over to see what you’ve got going!

  • Arlee Bird

Hmmm–I’ve always liked this song by Boston and they’d win if they were in the running. Both covers stayed true to the original within their genres. No Mercy’s version was more pleasing to my ears and they did more interesting stuff with their version. I’ll vote for them.

    Arlee Bird
    Tossing It Out

    • Cathy Kennedy

Lee, I rarely use the original band in these battles. That usually insures they’ll run away with the votes. I have your vote recorded for No Mercy. Thanks for the visit, my friend. I’m heading your way now!
