Maine Vacation 2022

Maine Vacation 2022, Part 7

Thank you for joining me for my newest edition of our Maine Vacation 2022.  For those just stopping by, last week I took everyone along with me as I revisited our day at Portland Head Light.  Let me apologize up front for those not expecting a lengthy post.  Feel free to look at the photos only or read everyone word of content. I want you to enjoy yourselves.

It’s now day 3 of our vacation and the last day to spend in southern Maine.  We started it off by going to the Maine Diner in Wells.

This is an old establishment that claims to have world famous food like grandma use to make and judging by the crowd already gathered perhaps it’s true.  The hostess gave us a pager. we went outside to take a few pictures and then went next door to browse in the gift shop. The only thing that piqued my interest were two refrigerator magnets, so DH willingly got them for me.  He’s such a sweetheart.  Last time we were in Maine, he got several magnets from nearly ever place we visited.

It was no time before the pager lit up, buzzing its cue that our table was ready.  The restaurant isn’t very big and nearly every seat was filled.  When we got to the table, a paper style menu/placement waited for us.  We already knew what we wanted. We looked at the menu online before leaving Knoxville.

DH ordered A. 2 Eggs from the menu for me with my eggs scrambled, sausage, home fries, and toast.  He had D. Blueberry Pancakes with Maine Maple Syrup.

Photos of celebrities lined the diner wall. A few I recognized easily are BB King and Gavin McCloud (Captain Stubbing from the Love Boat). If you enlarge the photo these two are side by side just above the water glass that closest to the wall clock, just above the empty corner booth. There are lots of sports commentators and athletes.

The slogan was true, “food like grandma use to make”!  This wasn’t a greasy spoon diner, folks.  Everything was truly delicious and if we had another day to spend in the area then we would love to try their dinner menu.  Maine Diner is staying on our Maine attractions list! 👍👍

We didn’t want to miss out trying the blueberry pie, so DH ordered a slice mid-way through breakfast.

Today’s plans included one of the things I most look forward to doing in southern Maine and that’s walking Marginal Way.  On one of our trips, we stopped there just so we can say we visited it but I don’t remember doing it, so that didn’t count in my mind.  After looking at pictures before hand I couldn’t wait to see it in person!

In the below picture compare, I captured two similar images. The lady standing in the road took away from it, so I edited her out of the picture.  It’s not perfect but it’s fun to try to fix things I don’t like about my pictures.  Oh, the marvel of modern technology! I remember the day when you had to send off your film and wait to see if you got anything worth keeping.

Marginal Way south end at Lobster Point Lighthouse

Google navigated us to what appears to be the half-way point at Israel Head Rd & Stearns Rd on the trail judging by the map but DH said several sources this is where it starts.  The quarter mile walk leads to Perkins Cove.  I want to point point out that this is a place with little parking.  We were fortunate after a second lap around to find a car leaving.  Next time, we have to remember to park somewhere close to Shore Road as there’s a connector to the walkway.

The views from Marginal Way is breath-taking.  I just loved the walk!  You can click through the slideshow below to see what I’m talking about.

I captured the waves coming into the little finger inlet on video for you to experience.  It was amazing fun!

Wasn’t that incredible?

We walked around Perkins Cove only for short bit. The clouds grew heavy with the threat of rain heading our way. We planned to have an early dinner here and would drive back over, but before we headed back along Marginal Way, we got a strawberry frappe to go. Yum! It sprinkled on us but it wasn’t too bad and it didn’t last long.

No sooner did we get to our car, a person asked if we were leaving. We said yes and if they’d give us just a few minutes to clean DH’s messy hands off from the frappe then they could have the spot. Like us, they were grateful and waited patiently.

From there we headed to Sweet Pea’s ice cream. They have Richardson’s ice cream. I got a single scoop and DH got a double. I can’t remember what our flavor chooses were this time. We were eating it standing just outside the shop, so I couldn’t take a picture. Bummer! It was good, but we thought Big Daddy’s was better. Interestingly enough, there was a Big Daddy’s next door to Sweet Pea’s and had it not been so close to dinner then we would’ve probably gone there, too. Hey, we were on vacation!

I some how missed taking a picture of Barnacle Billy’s from the outside. You can scroll through the slideshow below to see for yourself what a pretty little place this is.

After we left Perkins Cove, we made a casual stop by Wells Beach on the way to our room. It was a little windy and rainy but we still managed to enjoy a few moments gazing across the activity on the sand. Our hearts longed for a little more time in this part of Maine but it was time to get some shut eye since we were getting up before the chickens the following morning.

Thanks for making me a part of your day.  Please continue to watch for weekly updates as I share our daily activities through pictures in my Maine Vacation 2022 series.  Who said picture stories are just for kids?  Up next on CAAC the 4M dance party opens on Sunday for early party goers and you’re invited to come boogie to this week’s theme picks! Have a wild and wonderful day! X💋X💋, Cathy

      Stippie & Peachy,

Maybe Granny and Grandpaw will get a chance to visit the east coast of the US along the Maine shoreline. I have to look for images of Isle of Man. If that’s close to you, then I know it’s too far from us and that’s a place we’ll not see in this life time. Thanks for visiting my photo memories of our Maine vacation, dearie!

I’ve only been to Maine once and I can’t remember if I was about 15 or 18 but I do remember that we went to a pier and watched men unloading crates of lobsters and we bought some, took them home, and cooked them.

We’ve been to working piers but the times we visited they weren’t busy so we didn’t see much action. It would be super cool to see fishermen unload their daily catch. We aren’t huge seafood lovers especially shell fish but it we enjoy having a little. 🙂

      Brian,

A good vacation is about the beautiful scenery and food in my opinion. Of course there are other points of interest and thankfully those places fall into the beautiful scenic category. Every place we looked seemed to like that in Maine, though.

What a lovely vacation you had with DH. I would love to explore Maine.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and hugs. ♥

I like to go to diners. My oldest just came to town for a few days (business trip) and went to a diner I’ve been wanting to check out. I love the way the interiors of a diner make me feel. Old school, I guess. I have never been to Maine but I’d like to go.

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend! I hope you and DH are having a nice week and that all of your family members who recently took ill are feeling much better by now, including your sweet LA.

When a restaurant is so busy that they need to issue pagers to customers waiting to get in, it usually means two things: the food and service have a reputation for being great and live up to it, and you will most likely be waiting a long time to be seated. You and DH were smart. You visited the gift shop and focused on fridge magnets and other wares, making the time pass quickly. Sooner than expected, you were called back to the eatery and ushered to your table. As I told you in a comment on an earlier post in this series, I am a pancake lover, and I would have ordered a stack of those blueberry hotcakes. I can almost taste those fruity flapjacks. The picture you took has me pawing the monitor trying to get at them. 🙂 I’m happy to know that Maine Diner did not disappoint you. I’m sure their dinners are also excellent.

Marginal Way looks thrilling. I know I’d never grow tired of seeing and hearing those massive waves crashing onto the rocks, the percussion in nature’s symphony. As you guys walked the route taking pictures, the captures reveal an invigorating environment that makes all of your senses come alive. I notice it was overcast that morning, but that only makes the scene more interesting. The cloudy sky looks like it was painted with brush strokes by the master artist we all know well. The power of that rushing water is a reminder that you need to admire the wave action from a safe distance. If someone happened to fall into that chaotic white water, they would surely be swept out to sea. I can imagine the salt spray, the cooling mist on my face carried ashore on the sea breeze. If I had been there, I’d be snapping numerous pictures, too, because I would want to remember every exciting moment of my visit to that scenic attraction. You’re right, In some of the pics, you captured two sets of breaking waves, those in the foreground and others off in the distance. Yessum, every wave that rushed ashore and broke apart on the rocks performed a distinctive “dance” for you. No two waves were identical in their formation or destruction. It must have been mesmerizing. I would need to be dragged away from such a lovely spot, afraid of missing the next spectacular sight. Your camera even got a good view of a sailboat passing by the area.

I also was wowed by the video you recorded. This is the first time I have heard your voice in six or more years, since that time we spoke on the phone. Your voice-over narration reminded me that you have a sweet and pleasant voice revealing a sunny disposition. Your voice and easy giggle are music to my ears. DH is a very lucky man to have found someone like you. In your vid I see a brave soul sitting over there atop the rocks on the right. I don’t think I’d be that daring.

You can also count me in for a visit to Sweet Pea’s ice cream. Barnacle Billy’s is another lovely location. That first picture in the slideshow, the wide shot of the small boats clustered on the water behind the restaurant, with greenery and flowers in the foreground and trees forming a natural frame, is a wonderful composition! I’d be in my glory sitting on that deck having a seafood feast and watching the boats pass by. Barnacle Billy’s is spacious and looks clean and inviting. What a great place to rest and dine after a long day of sightseeing!

Well, I had a wonderful time again this week tagging along with you and DH as you experienced the best Maine has to offer. I look forward to the next installment. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

The walk along Marginal Way was exhilarating! We really didn’t want to leave but our time was cut short in part by the rain and the fact we had to get in bed early on this evening. I really hope if we return next year that we can go back here to walk it again. I loved it! You’re so kind. Many people have commented how they like my voice but I think it sounds a bit high pitched and I’m afraid it might be annoying to others. I won’t get any voice over gigs but my friends even strangers seem to like it. 🙂 You’re right about the water. It’s safe to enjoy from a distance. Trust me, I was no were close enough to fall into the ocean or to have a rouge wave snatch me off the rocks. Both are scary thoughts. I like clouds in the sky regardless if it’s a beautifully sunny blue or a dramatic moody gray. Clouds make the sky interesting. I appreciate the time you invest in seeing so many of the same details that I initially saw or after we got home. It’s hard to take everything in the first go-around because the brain is processing so much at one time. Through my photo memories I get to experience it all over and am seeing new things this time around. Thanks for taking time to visit. I surely hope you’ve recouped from your doctor appointments this week, dear friend!
