Hometown, USA songs
I grew up in McDowell county in southern West Virginia. This is home of the Rocket Boys from Homer Hickam’s memoirs portrayed in the 1999 motion picture October Sky.
Are you ready to boogie? Lace up your blue suede shoes. It’s time to dance. This week’s theme is “Hometown, USA” Tell us where you are from and post your hometown bands, artists, or songs.
I have been away from home for 35 years. Needless to say, I do not know what local musicians are getting their groove on, but here are few artists/songwriters I grew up with who are still doing what they love!

Tony Vance was in DH’s graduating class, just like Clinton. You may remember me telling you Tony sang at our wedding. He has a singing style very similar to David Gates. Here he is singing solo, “They Don’t Know Him”.
A couple of years back, I shared that Tony plays with the contemporary Christian rock group The 5 Man Jesus Band, if not take a listen to these boys jamming for the Lord!

There are other musical talents from back in the day, but these two are the only ones I know who are keeping the music alive. I would love to hear from friends telling me what’s going on with who!
Here’s an interesting tidbit for ya! Did you know, according to Wikipedia Christian pop artist/songwriter Michael W. Smith and Country music singer Brad Paisley are from the wild, wonderful state of West Virginia? Not me! Isn’t that cool?
One of my all-time favorite songs about wild, wonderful West Virginia is from a Rocky Mountain high folks artist. Come on sing along with me.

I’m a John Denver fan since way back when! I’m not familiar with the other artists mentioned, except for Brad Paisley. I’ve never been to West Virginia, but would love to go sometime.
We have several country musicians, who hail from Georgia. Among them, Alan Jackson, Trisha Yearwood, Billy Currington, Luke Bryan, and Jason Aldean. Cole Swindell is our newest local talent.

West Virginia is a beautiful state, especially in the northern parts. In our little neck of the woods, I never saw it so much as beautiful growing up. It wasn’t until I moved away that I grasped a new appreciation for my home. I, especially loved where my DH grew up on top of Bradshaw Mountain. From my in-laws porch looking across the plot of land where they once gardened, you get a small glimpse of a scene perhaps like the very one that inspired John Denver to write his song.

Yeah, I figured this would be the case. The first thing that came to mind when I found out hometown artists was our theme is local unknowns. WV doesn’t have too many famous artists or at least not many I know, so I was happy to give old friends a little face time on my blog.

Didn’t know a single one of them, except for John ‘Deutschendorf’ Denver 🙂 Back in the days when I used to play guitar and sing along, there were a few of his songs, of course, including the one you chose in my repertoire – LOL
