Hello, Kittens and Dawgs! Last week, I started sharing two of my regular Friday segments, Skywatch Friday and Celebrate the Small Things on Thursday as a way to make the content more enjoyable for all who stop by.
In my Skywatch Friday section today, I’m taking a look back to our December day trip to Bryson City and Dillsboro, North Carolina. These two towns are about 30-minutes apart. We had a lovely time strolling around Bryson City and shared some of those photos here and here.
We were in these mountain communities in the middle of the week and there were no worries of crowds or traffic. When we got to Dillsboro, we decided to swing by to see the left-behind movie scene props from Harrison Ford’s hit flick, The Fugitive.
I photographed this in late fall 2013. The angle and exposure were not the best in those shots, so I was glad to have another chance for a do-over.
This time I zoomed in more for a better view and in the below picture if you click to enlarge you should be able to read Illinois Dept. of Correction on the side of the bus.
It was a splendid day for early December to be outdoors soaking up the sunshine even with the occasional wind gusts.
After we got done in Dillsboro, we stopped off to see the Balsam Mountain Inn and as the veil of night fell, we venture to Pigeon Forge on our way home to enjoy the lights.
Today, I’m Celebrating the Small Things include…
I know I’ve said it before but I’m celebrating living in a place I love and can have many do-overs on photo-ops or moments to just soak up the beautiful mountain atmosphere. I know there are some who visit may only have that once in a lifetime experience or perhaps an annual trip to this part of the country that we call home. I count us truly blessed to live here and do not take a moment of it for granted.

Debbie, I can’t imagine living in Canada. If I were born and raised there then I would know no difference but living in the south I could not do it. I don’t think I could live happily in some of the northern states even my home state of West Virginia where the small temperature difference is more than I want and they get a whole lot more snow. However, you’re right, winter like all seasons will pass quickly. Although, some days it seems to linger forever. Thanks for stopping in for a visit, my friend!
I often wonder how people who settle here from hot climates, like the Caribbean or India manage it. At least this is southern Canada. Our winters aren’t usually as bad as most parts. The snow often flies over us and dumps on Buffalo.
Still, winter does get old fast and seems last longer than the other seasons. Keep warm!
Debbie, Hmmm, I don’t know how hot climate folks make the adjustment unless they are tired of the hot conditions. I don’t like either extreme, though. If I lived in Canada then it would certainly be in the southern portion. lol
North Carolina has some of the prettiest and cutest mountain towns. I love exploring when I have the chance. Interesting that the movie props were still there…

Mandy, exploring the small western North Carolina mountain communities is one of our favorite pastimes. It’s a beautiful area! The Fugitive train crash looks good after years resting in the same spot. It’s a lot of fun to take a peek at it from time to time just to see how it’s still standing the age of time. One of the most annoying problems we have in Florida at this time of year is a multitude of traffic jams caused by the influx of snowbirds from northern states mixing with elderly retirees behind the wheel. Accidents and backups are common from November through April. Surely it would be a pleasure to do what you and DH so often do and that is to drive through those small towns in Western NC and encounter sparse traffic, wide open spaces and a slower pace of life. i was not aware that those props from The Fugitive remained behind. I imagine the sight of that train and a bus marked Illinois Dept of Correction would baffle many unsuspecting visitors.
Throughout the year I often complain about the heat and humidity of Florida, conveniently forgetting how cold it gets in northern states. This is the time of year I celebrate living in the far south and, as an added bonus, close to the beach.

Tom, I’ll never forget how congested the traffic was during our visit to Florida in March 2013. I didn’t realize it was such a big problem until afterward. I thought the crowded roads were because of spring break. I will say this it was a nice treat stay in Naples with friends. The weather was really nice. I think it got as warm as 80 but the evenings cooled off quickly. The Sunday afternoon after we got home, we decided to go to the store. It was really cold and the wind spitting snow. That’s when we discovered we had a flat on the rear passager side. DH ran over a road gator during the night and expressed concerns about it. I reckon it was a good thing the tire held up until we got home anyhow. Our area during the off-season is generally light on traffic, except for the biggest tourist areas of the Smoky’s and even then it’s still not as bad as traffic the in Florida spring 2013.
