Battle of the Bands

Goldeneye BOTB Showdown

Normally, I have my Sunday Edition of Monday’s Music Moves Me slated today (linky party at the bottom), but instead I’m bringing to you another James Bond theme song in my BOTB series with spy thriller #17 starring Pierce Brosnan as the newest 007.

Tina Turner performed the Goldeneye self-titled theme song written by Bono and the Irish rock band, U2.  Being tasked with the job to find the two best cover artists,  I elected to scout for male artists for this battle and was disappointed finding only a recordings available.

I invite you now to listen to both artists.  Afterwards, tell me in comments which cover artist gets your vote and why if you’re inclined.  Remember, it’s all in fun. 😉

Contender #1 Identical Suns

Contender #2 End of You

Which artist is the best, Identical Suns or End of You? Leave your vote in comments!

I invite you to visit BoTBers with showdowns going on today.

*Unless noted, all other participants will present two battles per month on the 1st & 15th

Polls close noon (EST) on May 6th

Next week, same time slot I’ll be back to announce the winner in this round, so be sure to mark your calendar to see if your pick is named the winner. Come by tomorrow to hit the dance floor the 4M gang where we’ll be boogieing to “Work-themed songs”. This is CAAC signing off, have a bandtastic day!

This artist is for entertainment only and is not a battle contender. I thought they were great fun to watch this not so serious rendition.

I was here earlier in the day, but for some reason I am not signed in to leave comments with my phone. So now I have returned to cast my vote from the trusty laptop 🙂 My vote goes to Identical Suns

      Mary,

Don’t you just hate it when you use another device to discover you can’t do something because you don’t have your password? That’s so annoying. Thanks for voting. I have you down for Identical Suns who has grabbed 8 votes in this round. I wonder who’ll win this one? lol

      Diedre,

Wise Guys is highly entertaining. They are great fun. I appreciate you stopping by to play along with your vote for Identical Suns giving them a total of 7 votes and crushing their opponent pretty badly.

  • Eugenia

It’s Identical Suns for me, Cathy! I hope this week presents less challenges for you and yours. Keep on keepin’ on. 😘

      Eugenia,

Identical Suns is running away with this showdown taking their 6th vote. Oh thanks, I hope this week is less challenging, too. lol

      Patrick,

Unfortunately, the Wise Guys aren’t apart of the BOTB. But, you’re not the only person who like them. A few already said if I had used them then they would’ve gotten their votes. Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

I have to catch up on all your A to Z Creations. I would have voted for the Wise Guys as they did a great rendition of the song and I am usually not one for A Capella groups. Havibng said that, I vote for the 2nd -End of You which surprises me since it was a bit heavy metal…just a bit but it held my attention unlike the first one.

      Birgit,

Feel free to view all of my A to Z sketches in April’s Reflections of My Life post. I included a slide show of all my artwork recreations from last month. Your vote for End of You has kept this battle from being a shut out, so a big thanks to you, my friend!

    HiYa, CAThy! It’s That You!

This one was pretty easy for me. I cast me BOTB bote for IDENTICAL SUNS. They had a pretty tough beat & rhythm going there. It’s the “Badass” type of sound I would have loved back when I was about 18 years old. Every once in awhile I still like to hear a song that “kicks out the jams” like that.

The other band had too much of a typical Heavy Metal kind of sound for my tastes. I definitely preferred the BOMP-BOMBA-BOMP! BOMP-BOMBA-BOMP! of Identical Suns.

So far, it looks like this could be a blowout, but I hope it turns into more of a real “Battle” for ya in the coming days.

      Stephen,

The voting is definitely not looking too good but it early so hopefully things will change around. IDENTICAL SUNS gets a third tally!

Both versions are quite good. Had the Wiseguys been included I would have voted for them. As it is now I’m going with Identical Suns. I preferred their vocals and the arrangement. Very cool.

Yeah, I figured the Wiseguys would get votes. I preferred just sharing them for entertainment. IDENTICAL SUNS gets a second vote. Thanks for stopping by!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Sunday, first of May, and BOTB Day, dear friend! Maureen McGovern sang, “There’s got to be a morning after,” and I hope this day after your triumphant completion of the A to Z Challenge finds you well and in good spirits.

In the fall of 1982, I was still in PA working at an NBC TV station when the network’s series Remington Steele premiered and launched the career of Pierce Brosnan. However I didn’t see him on the big screen in the role of James Bond. This morning also marks the first time I am hearing Tina Turner’s recording of “Goldeneye” and watching her video.

In your battle, act #1, Identical Suns, has the advantage of a fully produced mewsic video that cleverly resembles Tina’s. It boasts brilliant, colorful posterized effects, screen explosions and other elements you’d expect to find in a video promoting the action film. To be fair, we should close our eyes and simply listen to the band’s performance, but that’s hard to do. I managed to close my eyes and just listen, and I liked that I heard. The audio mix is excellent and the lead vocal is reminiscent of David Bowie, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and other male led bands of the new wave 80s. The style and arrangement set the right tone for a Bond song.

I also like the version by act #2, End of You, an alternative rock and goth metal band based in Helsinki, Finland. No mewsic video this time, only a static screen shot. As I listened, it occurred to me that the vocal is unnecessarily creepy. Ordinarily I like creepy, but I don’t think it goes as well with the 007 series. In addition, the dense mix doesn’t fit as well with the style my ears expect to hear in Bond theme songs. I like to clearly hear all the instruments playing with the vocal placed high in the mix. These guys laid down a heavy metal wall of sound that simply didn’t seem right for this song. For those reasons, I am voting for band #1 – Identical Suns.

What a treat it was to watch and listen to the comical version of “Goldeneye” performed live by Wise Guys, a barbershop style German a capella group. The lead singer did a great imitation of Tina Turner, and the other guys were brilliant with their choreography and using their voices for percussion and other instruments. The audience enjoyed their performance and so did I.

A special shout out to my good buddy Foghorn Leghorn!

I hope you and DH are having a good weekend and getting your work done. I’ll be back tomorrow for your 4M Monday post. Enjoy your Sunday and have a wonderful week and month, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

I am in good spirits. I’m happy the A2Z blogfest is behind me for another year. I really appreciated you rallying behind me each day. I sure didn’t deserve it but thank you for your support.

We did managed to get the water leak fixed going to our water heater. It’s remarkable how things like that take so much time. We tried to replace the outdoor water facet washers but we the washer assortment we had didn’t have what we needed, but DH turned one of the washers around before putting it back together and that seemed to fix it for now. We’ll need to get the right ones soon, though. We’ll see how the old water heater fairs, if she continues to work then we won’t replace it just yet. We need to concentrate on getting a new freezer now.

I loved the TV series Remington Steele. Pierce Brosnan was great in that show and it was the first time ever seeing him in anything. Years before Brosnan stepped into the role of 007 I felt he would be a good one and he didn’t disappointment me as James Bond. However, I still love Sean Connery and Roger Moore better than the others that followed. I have the first vote in the battle recorded for IDENTICAL SUNS!
