Chats on a Farmhouse Porch

Chit Chat On Patrice’s Farmhouse Porch

Change is in the air! I literally mean change is in the air. After experiencing lovely fall temperatures in the mid-70s yesterday, our forecast is saying the temperature will be dropping all day and that’s gonna feel pretty miserable with the rain in our area.

However, I won’t let the threat of the nip biting air and drizzle keep me from my chit-chat session on Patrice’s farmhouse porch. Wanna join me?

Then follow me…

“Brrr, the weather has surely changed, hasn’t it Patrice?”

“It sure has. Why last night, we had to build a fire.”

“Oooo, that sounds so toasty, cozy!”

“Grab yourself a cup of coffee and pull up a rocker, Cathy.”

“Mmm, the coffee sure warms me up. Thanks!”

“Cathy, I was wondering, what kind of camera do you have? I use an old point and shoot that I bought my husband years ago.Digital cameras were just being introduced at the time.”

“I currently use a Canon Powershot SD880.  It’s a really nice little digital camera. I can fit in my jeans’ front pocket, but the best thing is it takes remarkably sharp photos. Technology sure has changed over the years, ” I said laughing. “My very first camera was a Nikon FG-20. You know an old 35mm SLR.”

“Things get smaller and compact over the years, like our bank accounts. Speaking of bank accounts this reminds me of the holidays. They are just around the corner. I was wondering, while I tend to keep to a traditional style dinner for Thanksgiving, what’s going to be on your menu?”

“Patrice, I’m a very traditional person, too.  There is something special about keeping family customs.  I have over the years combined my DH’s and my mother’s holidays dishes while incorporating my own.  I use to bake a turkey, but for the past two years I’ve gotten away from that and bought boneless turkey meat kinda like a small roast.  It’s more expensive, but I like the idea of not having to lift a heavy bird in and out of the oven. Plus, you’re paying for the bone. I’m doing this again this year. We’ll also have ham, mashed sweet potatoes…”

“What? Mashed sweet potatoes, why?”

“Yeah, mashed sweet potatoes. As a farmer, you know how sweet potatoes are grown. I like removing the sweet potato skins and prepare them like regular mashed potatoes, except I don’t use any milk – just butter.  This turns out really good and it’s simple to reheat.  It’s a winner at our house! Also, we have home-made dressing, green beans, cranberry relish, biscuits made from scratch, and homemade pies – pumpkin and pecan.”

“It sounds like you and I have our work cut out for us,” said Patrice smiling. “Okay, switching gears on you, I’m curious what’s the biggest vehicle you’ve driven and have you ever been on a train?”

“The largest thing I’ve ever driven has to be my parents Oldsmobile Cutlass. No, wait! I drove one of my bosses’ vehicles once, a big ole Cadillac. It felt huge compared to our Ford Fiesta I was driving at that time. I was so afraid I was going to hit something with it, you know?  Yes, I’ve ridden a choo-choo before.  We visited Silver Dollar City, which is now known to millions as Dollywood and we took the train ride in the theme park.  There are a couple of trains within a short drive from us and I really want to ride one of these in my lifetime. I guess I’ll be sure to include this on my Wish List, huh?”

“Definitely, Cathy! I’ve been on several trains but did you know I rode the Incline Railway train in the Chattanooga area. That’s getting close to you.”

“Shoot yeah, Patrice! Chattanooga is a hop, skip, and a jump (approx 2hrs)  from Knoxville. How cool is that?  I have a question for you, ladies.”

“What’s that?”

“Have any of you ever given yourself a home perm? If so, what’s the trick to rolling your hair up by yourself? I attempted this earlier in the week, but the concave type rollers won’t snug up against my head. I’m beginning to think they are too big.”

“Yikes,” Patrice exclaimed, “Gee, Cathy I’m glad you said that. You reminded me I have an appointment in town with my hairdresser.”

“Oh, we understand! It was such fun to sit here and chit-chat on your farmhouse porch. Thanks for the standing invitation to join you anytime. I’ll see you next week, ladies!”

With hugs and smiles, Patrice and her friends part company with the lingering warmth of a visit well spent amongst sisters of the heart. To each of you, be well!

If you would like to participate in the chit-chat session on your own blog, then here are Patrice’s questions you can copy and paste into your own post:

  1. What kind of camera do you use?
  2. What will you have for Thanksgiving dinner? If not in the US, tell us about a special meal, please.
  3. What’s the biggest vehicle you’ve driven?
  4. Have you ever been on a train? This can be a commuter train or the chugga-chugga-choo-choo kind.:)
  5. What question would you like to ask the people visiting on my porch next week?

I know, I know this is a long post. Let me mention a few things more to you and then I promise to let you go, okay?

  • First, I’d like to invite you to join me for Wayback Wednesdays which I co-host. The blogger participant count is low and I would love to get others involved. Why not check it out HERE!
  • Second, my mind is really slipping folks. Fellow author, Brenda Youngerman featured me on her blog yesterday, and I didn’t get a chance until late last night to post about it. If time permits, you can read Tuesday Spotlight On Me!
  • Third, I’m participating in Wednesday Hodgepodge, so watch for that post to follow!

See, I told you I was going to let you go. Promise delivered! =D
