A cute unicorn design using points & dots

A year ago this past May, Rain posed a similar art theme as today’s Points & Dots.  I enjoyed the exercise. It was a direction I wouldn’t have gone on my own had it not been for the challenge. I remember thinking I wanted to do more designs using the technique but never got around to doing it until now.  I used Procreate to sketch a cute unicorn for t-shirt design for my L.A. and I began to wonder, why not rework it using points and dots.  This is what I came up with.

I call her Cotton Candy

I’m pleased with how this illustration came together.  I like the effect of all the points and dots give my art but I don’t think this is a method I’d like to use all the time. It’s tiring for my hand. It’s definitely fun for a change.

When I make L.A.’s t-shirt I probably won’t use the points and dot design but instead I’ll simply paint the picture on her shirt using fabric paint markers.

This week’s Thankful Thursday list I include these blessings…

  1. I’m thankful for the nice warm weather.
  2. I’m thankful we got everything or close to it back in  place in the Avalon.
  3. I’m thankful DH was able to make a few repairs on the roof.
  4. I’m thankful for the early start on preparing our Thanksgiving dinner.
  5. I’m thankful for my passions that fill me with happiness and hope.

Last month, I picked up once more playing along with Kat’s writing prompts.  Writing was my first creative passion. I hope to revive this dormant side of me before it becomes a lost art altogether. This week I’m using Kat’s prompt to write a post inspired by the word: fun.

In my B.C. (before children) years I didn’t have any hobbies.  I went to school and worked. DH and I took part in a monthly dinner club consisting of a small circle of friends from church.  It was at one of our dinner’s that I learned about Carol’s crafting passion. She did a lot of tow painting, mostly wooden cut out designs. She did a fabulous job. Eventually she moved into making tye-dyed t-shirts then began painting on sweat/t-shirts.  It was in that moment I felt the creative hooks dig in.

It wasn’t until after our first child was born that I took the initiative to start crafting.  Being a stay at home mom provided me a little free time to devote to DIY projects and even candy making. All new beginnings but things that have stayed with me throughout the years.  I’ve made Christmas wreaths, fall leaf paint imprinted tee & sweatshirts, salt-dough Christmas ornaments, Christmas images transferred then painted by hand onto sweatshirts, soap and lip gloss making, and I made various home-made candies. All of these were wonderful fun projects for making rich traditions for my family.

Over the years I pulled away from crafting but I kept up my candy making skills. This year is the first in many for me to get the nudge to paint a t-shirt design. I credit the new energy and interest now that I have a grand daughter. I made her an adorable little Halloween design last month and now I’m looking forward to continuing the fun with a Christmas design.  I don’t rely transfer images as in the old days. Instead, I now paint free-style designs inspired by images I see or my own creations. Art puts a whole lot of happiness in my life and it’s great fun to share it with others!

Thanks for stopping in with your morning coffee for a peek at my latest illustration and …oh yeah, thanks for not spilling it on my artwork. 😉 I’m heading over to Rain’s Garden to browse through the gallery of artistry and you’re welcome to follow along!

I’ll be back tomorrow with an edition of Friday Fun Stuff chockful of giggles, fill-ins, & more! Come join the fun! X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. I am quite certain that your little granddaughter is going to love her Unicorn T-shirt with or without the dots … though I have to say the dots are really awesome. I love your brief but full of fun life story as a wife, mother and now a Grandmother. Life can be so wonderful and I think it is up to each of us to make it that way. Art is a way of expressing our love of things and people and nature and life … it expresses what we find to be important and gives us joy. I loved this post, Cathy. It reminds me that I can make happiness in my life and the life of my loved ones even when the world outside seems bleak. Thank you for lifting my spirits today 🙂 Stay well and be safe … you have much to be grateful for 🙂

  2. Cute unicorns and wonderful thankfuls. I am glad you are getting your crating on. 🙂 XO

    1. John,

That’s what I’m planning to do but it may have to wait until after the holidays. I want to make her a Christmas design to paint on a shirt. 🙂

  3. Your cotton candy unicorn is adorable and very dotted (or is that dotty?). I also love the rainbow, too. It was perfect for Rain’s TAD this week.

Somehow it seems that candy making and soap making require similar skills, so I thought that was something that you didn’t give up candy making. Of course, the idea of creating your own tee shirt designs sounds like that grandchild has sparked your interest again. Such a great idea.

    1. Elizabeth,

After my kids got older, they out grew Mommy painting t-shirt designs. Candy making never goes out of favor with anyone of any age. 🙂 LA has sparked my interest. I’m excited this part has returned. Thanks for visiting!

  4. I love pointillism(spelling??) but I could not do it as too painful in my hands. I have no idea how Seurat did it. Your unicorn is so sweet looking and your granddaughter will love it. My mom got me into crafting because she used to do it at home when she was a child. I remember making little Santas and elves using acorns for the head and walnuts for the body, paint and felt. I always liked drawing and got into card making in the late 1990’s. It is so relaxing and calming in this upheaval of a world. I am thankful that none of my friends have co-vid and that my hubby’s niece recuperated from it. I am thankful for being able to listen to beautiful music and having my furbabes around. My hubby is tops on the list…even with his complaining, he is my sweetie.

    1. Birgit,

I’m with you on the pointillism, it hurts my hands as well. Your santa and elves sound like a cute idea. Hobbies, good health, family, friends, and furbabies are definitely blessings.

  5. That t-shirt and your granddaughter are adorable! When I first opened my Etsy shop, one of the things I wanted to do was paint unique designs on dinnerware and drink ware, but I never got started. Now I’m getting the itch again, but haven’t even begun to move my home office to my dining room (which is what I need to happen in order to have all my supplies and tools together, and room to move around to create. I’d better get on that!

  6. Love the Cotton Candy. Adorable. Love the colors.

When we are young we tend to worry about making enough money to survive and then we transition into other things when we are more settled. I’m not crafty, but boating and traveling were my passion for many years. Now it’s just boating.

Have a fabulous Thankful Thursday, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

  7. Hi Cathy 🙂 I love what you wrote about your crafting…and how neat that you make candy! I haven’t ventured too far into that yet, just a few fudges here and there…and once I attempted nougat but that was a tough one! It didn’t really set and come together, kind of ended up a nougat soup lol…your art is wonderful! And I’m with you….to hard on the hands to do pointillism! Once in a while it’s fun though! 🙂

  8. Your unicorn is totally adorable and your thankfuls are most wonderful too. Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

  9. Expressing yourself through any art form is a wonderful thing. A great release, a needed escape.

And…how we all need to escape!

  10. Very nice this Unicorn in points, well drawn!
I think it’s great that you keep making your own art and printing it on chirt. Have fun with it. Saying thank you is always a very liberating feeling, I see that often!
    Have a good week, Elke

  11. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Thankful Thursday & Art Date With Rain day, dear friend!

Speaking of rain, for the last 24 hours we have been getting heavy amounts of rain from the tropical storm that is passing by off the coast of Florida. Torrential rain was beating down when I awoke at 5 am. I predict I will see, by the dawn’s early light, much of our lawn under water.

I adore Cotton Candy, the cute, colorful and cuddly looking unicorn you created using the Points & Dots technique. Purple, green and blue are my three favorite colors. If I understand correctly, you plan to use that illustration as a template for a hand painted shirt you will make for Little Angelina. (Am I correct?)

I am thankful that Florida is receiving much needed moisture. After a very rainy summer, things had been getting too dry around here. Mrs. Shady needed to hose water the garden frequently. However this deluge we are now getting could be too much of a good thing for our veggie crops. Last night we called off our annual Thanksgiving feast for up to 20 family members because the spike in coronavirus cases makes the large gathering it too risky.

Thank you for telling us when and how the creative spark ignited and you developed a passion for crafting, art, candy making, DIY projects and more. Your talent as an artist is well documented here at CAAC, and I know you will have fun designing shirts for Angelina. Better yet, you can pass down to her your passion for arts and crafts, candy making and other skills so that she can continue the family tradition. It gives me joy to think of her learning from you.

Have a happy and Thankful Thursday, dear friend Cathy!
