2019 The Little Mermaid Art Sketch Series ‘Intertidal Zone’

Thanks for joining in today.  If you missed previous posts in The Little Mermaid Art Sketch series you can find them easily under Latest Mews in my side menu.  (Update: A complete list of all posts, here)

Today’s alphabet letter ‘I’ left me scratching my head.  As for characters in the animated movies and TV series, there aren’t any ‘I’ illustration possibilities which left me to my imagination.  I told you, initially I might have to think outside the sandbox on this one theme because of the lack of representations for the alphabet.  Using the ocean vocabulary list I found intertidal zone as an intriguing subject which immediately sparked my memory of the purrfect scene to sketch using this illustration as a base for my design.

  1. Love the coloured-in one!

    1. Kislaya,

The Internet sure makes it easy to pull challenging things together easier. Often I wonder how we ever survived without this technology but then we did. We visited the library to learn these things. 🙂

  2. This is a great scene you drew of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr😜. I know this is an important scene which you captured well because she has saved the man she sacrifices everything for.

    1. Birgit,

It’s interesting, we think of ‘From Here to Eternity’ when we first see this Little Mermaid scene. I wonder when the younger generation see similar scenes in movies today, will think of the old classic or the Disney animated movie? I learned yesterday that the LM scene inspired the rescue scene where Diana saves Steve in the new Wonder Woman movie. 🙂

    1. Mimi,

My thinking powers must have been sharp on the day I came up with the idea for this sketch. All I can say is I’m glad I did my sketches ahead because I’m not thinking too clearly these days. 🙂

  3. Awwww, good choice! I love that part of the movie. Oh my gosh, I did say movie didn’t I. Gee, wonder when they’re going to make this cartoon into a movie, right? They’ve done Lion King and I can’t wait to see that. Anyway, FANTASTIC my friend as always and great choice!!! See you tomorrow! hugs

    1. Marie,

Actually, I noticed in recent months on Netflix that there is a newly released non-animated ‘The Little Mermaid’ movie. I have it in my watch next cue. There are a few other non-animated Disney remakes ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ which I have seen and enjoyed very much. Netflix also has Mowgli: The Legend of the Jungle which I thought I’d seen but haven’t. I did catch the 2016 ‘The Jungle Book’ flick a year or so ago and it was good, too. Thanks for dropping in for a visit. I’ll see ya soon!

  4. What a great job on this one, Cathy. One of my favorites so far.

Oh from here to eternity. What was some hot kisses.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

We watched that film about a dozen or so years ago while visiting my in-laws one weekend. It was great fun to finally see that famous beach scene. 🙂 I’m glad this is your favorite artwork in the series so far. Thanks for telling me!

    1. Roland,

I haven’t gotten a chance to see the new Wonder Woman flick but would like to see it. I loved the old 70s series with Lynda Carter! Gal Gadot reminds me of Lynda. Thanks for sharing the video clip!

    1. John,

I thought the scene was a purrfect fit for today’s alpha prompt and one I wanted to do from the beginning but wasn’t sure how I’d work it until I stumbled on the term ‘Intertidal Zone’. I sure wouldn’t have thought of that on my own.

    1. Thanks! I’m happy to have found a solution to the letter ‘I’. Sometimes coming up with the subject for each alpha prompt is a challenge in itself. 🙂

    1. Sue,

I have all my posts done if I don’t get things planned ahead then I become too overwhelmed and even at that I’m feeling a bit pressed this year. I have too many other things on my plate dividing my attention.

  5. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wordless Wednesday and “I” day, dear friend!

I admire you for putting on your thinking cap and finding a relevant scene from The Little Mermaid for your “I” sketch. I needed to look up “intertidal zone” to get the exact meaning. I read that it is also called the “foreshore,” “seashore” and “littoral zone.” It is the area between the tides – above water at low tide and underwater at high tide. In this case, your illustration benefits greatly from the addition of color, turning it into a three dimensional composition with all elements clearly defined. I love it! That scene with Eric and Ariel immediately reminded me of the famous “beach kiss” scene in the movie From Here To Eternity:

You did another splendid job for “I” day, dear friend Cathy. Have a find Wednesday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

    1. Tom,

It’s good to see you so early this morning. Like you, I thought of the scene in the movie ‘From Here to Eternity’. Although the Disney classic isn’t passionate as the old film, I still wondered if the illustrators got their inspiration from the early 50s big-screen sensation. 🙂 Thanks for providing the YT movie clip and for your visit, my friend.
