Drops of Jupiter #BOTB showdown

Happy June 1st, kittens and dawgs!  I’m a fly by the seat kinda gal, as you know and I don’t have a song title to feature in my battles until days before I roll out my post. I look for inspiration that surrounds me in the moment and I found just that with summer’s unofficial kick off this past weekend.

Normally, my song selection is a retro tune done by current or more recent artists/bands. However, I’m going to go in reverse in Drops of Jupiter #BoTB showdown.

Pat Monahan, lead singer of Train, wrote today’s BoTB song choice after the passing of his mother in 1998 from lung cancer. From Monahan’s healing process flowed the lyrics for Drops of Jupiter.

The words are beautifully airy touching my senses with the essences of summer. I’m sharing for your reference and pleasure only Train’s original cut.

 

Okay, Train is what I call a current artist/band. A few other artists covered Drops of Jupiter, which I was sorta surprised to find out and a couple of them are retro artists.

    If you know me at all, then you know Train is MY wheelhouse. You’re all up in my wheelhouse girlfriend. But it’s all good. 🙂 I love to see other people supporting Train. They are an awesome band, and this is a great song. Seems like I recall in an interview that this song was spawned from a dream that Pat had about his mother after she passed away. He said that it’s the ultimate irony that this song remains their most successful because she was always the most supportive person of his career (and, therefore, the band) and it was a song in tribute to her that really “made” the band, BUT she wasn’t alive to hear it. Of course, she hears it. Just not here. Again, irony.

    If you get a chance listen to their song called You Can Meet My Mom. Pat considers it to be the follow-up to this one (of a sort) and there is some interesting footage of behind the scenes stuff for the making of their California 37 album, including a 2-3 minute clip for that song. I think it’s worth watching.

    As for my vote. I couldn’t really get into the Judy Collins version. Her styling is unique. And for some things it works very well. I’d just say that this isn’t one of them (for these ears). So, give me Eddie Money on this one.

    Oh how I love this song! Drops of Jupiter is definitely a favorite of mine. No one does it like Train. But Eddie Money does a good job with it. I didn’t care for Judy Collins. I like her voice but there was no feeling in her delivery. It was just sort of Blah. Eddie put some energy into it. Especially how the song came to be, it has to be sung with emotion. Eddie did that. Please give him my vote.
    GREAT battle! I’ll be singing this song all day now…and I love it!

    This was a close battle for me. Though neither version totally blew me away, I still enjoyed them. Ultimately, Eddie wins out by a small margin
    Like the comment above, Trane still owns this song. 😉

    Nobody tops Train on this song. For your battle I’ll roll with Eddie Money. Maybe it’s the male vocal thingy.

    I’ll probably get clobbered with this comment, but I have never been a fan of Judy Collins. Eddie Money, on the other hand: OH, YEAH! (Take Me Home Tonight is one of my favorite songs).

    EDDIE GETS MY VOTE.

    Brevard trivia: When I was a young pup in NE Ohio, we used to come all the way down to Brevard in the summer to go to a dance camp at Rainbow Lake. Loved it. I understand that the cabins and lodge might have burned down in a fire (or so says the rumor).

    Hi, Cathy; Sadly, neither one of those videos is available in Canada. I tried to find alternates but had absolutely no luck! 🙁 Sorry, I’ll have to miss voting on this battle. Great song, though.

    I like male vocalists better’n female vocalists. And I like Eddie Money better’n I like Judy Collins. Back in the day, I owned a couple Eddie albums (still do have one on compact disc) but I have never owned a single Judy Collins album.

    None of that means a thing this time, though.
    I liked JUDY’s cover a heckuva lot better’n Eddie’s.

    For one thing, the drumming on Eddie’s recording is just wrong – very distracting. I have no idea what drugs– er, I mean, what “SONG” that drummer thought he was doing, but it wasn’t THIS one! I think he was playing in his own private, mental world.

      Stephen, I wanted to quickly let you know I have polling widget set for users to be able to change their vote. Did you try to do this? If not, do you mind trying to do it and letting me know what happens? This way I will know what to expect for future mess ups. I’ll be over soon to vote in your BoTB. The yard is calling my name and I must follow. I’d rather not go outdoors as it’s SO hot and humid today, but I need to tackle some trimming around the house. DH did the hard stuff yesterday, so I’m happy to assist when I can. Have a bandtastic day!

        I’m happy to report that the “Change Vote” on the widget thingie worked just fine. I changed my vote to JUDY and then I counted the votes for her in the comment section (3 at this point) and it coincided with what the thingie said. So, it’z all good!

        FYI, I just listened to the Eddie Money version for the third time, and I think my issue with the drumming has most to do with the fact that I feel it’s way too up front in the mix. It’s so prominent that it kind of detracts from everything else going on, especially Eddie’s vocals.

        So, maybe the drummer wasn’t on the drugs; it was the sound mixer on the board who was [:o)}

    Hello Cathy!

    I had a hard time getting behind the Judy Collins version, but I really enjoyed Eddie Money’s take on the song. Not sure if it’s because we are so conditioned to hearing a male voice sing this song, or what the magic key is here. Please give my vote to Mr Money.

    Both versions are nice, but I prefer Judy’s voice and the back up is nice. Kind of a strange sound for Judy, but it works for me on this song.

    Hi, Cathy!

    My Money’s on Eddie! The Judy Collins folk style version just sort of laid there, but Eddie gave the song his usual husky, soulful treatment. I also enjoyed the light rock instrumental backing more on his version. Please record my vote for Eddie Money in your June 1 battle.
