#AtoZChallenge Creating iPad Art Sketches Letter “T”

Hello, Kitten & Dawgs!  How was your weekend?  Mine was good, no complaints here. I just can’t believe how terribly fast this month is zipping past us, though.  Are you having a terrific time visiting new and old bloggers?  I’m loving it!  In case this is your first time here, let me say last year I challenged myself to venture outside my comfort zone to pick up my pencil to create art sketches for the first time and this time last year I sketched a treehouse.   This year, I’m went high-tech with my iPad, Apple pencil, and drawing app Procreate to create my sketches and today, I’m sharing a cute Turtle Couple.

This week’s mewsic theme is Earth Day song picks on Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me and you’re invited to hit the dance floor with my co-hosts, XmasDolly (Party Coordinator), Stacy, and filling in for Colette (taking a break due to illness) is our pawsome friend, Michelle!

I don’t  think you need a special day to celebrate the earth. I think it’s our responsibility to take care of our world just like we do ourselves, our children, our cars, our home. God gave it to us, so it’s up to us to treat it right. I am limiting my song choices to one song today. I know folks don’t have a lot of time to spend on one blog and not wanting to risk frustration on anyone’s part here’s a just a brief history on Green Green Grass of Home.  Claude “Curly” Putman,  Jr wrote the song and country artist, Johnny Darrell, recorded it first but it was Porter Wagnor‘s cover that catapult this little ditty in the charts in 1965.  That same Tom Jones appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and inquired about new mewsic by rock legend, Jerry Lee Lewis. He was impressed with this song after listening to Lewis’ Country Songs by City Folks album so much that he covered it the following year. It hit the top of the UK chart in December of 1966. Here’s Tom Jones singing Green Green Grass of Home.

It just occurred to me that my artist’s first name begins with the A2Z letter prompt. lol Don’t you just love it when things tie together so neatly?

Whew, I was just about to forget to announce last week’s BoTB winner. To recap, I used three different nap time/bedtime lullabies in my battle. Here’s the break down of how it went. I had a heck of time deciding on my favorite but in the end I think the one that spoke to my heart the sweetest.

Sir Elton ‘Blessed’ respectfully secured Mary, Lee, and Alana’s votes for a total of 3.

Bette Midler ‘Baby Mine’ commanded John, Tom, Eugenia, Marie, Stephen, and My attention taking a whooping 6 votes.

Billy Joel ‘Lullaby Goodnight My Angel’ earned Ellen, Sandee, Kim,  Mimi, & Birgit’s affections giving him 5 votes.

Patti Smith ‘The Jackson Song’ (write-in entry) from my rebel buddy, Cathy. Wouldn’t you know it we share the same name spelling? lol

Bette Midler steals the showdown with her heart-stirring lullabye and so, I’ll leave you with this YouTube Greatest Hits playlist and mark your calendar for May 1st for my next BoTB!

  1. Cathy, I want to be like you when I grow up! wink You outdid yourself with the A-Z, but all of your posts are well done! Hugs!

  2. Hi Cathy, I’m loving the turtle couple – they would fit right in with my romance posts. Your skill of capturing characters is really good and I’m loving all your pictures.
Your spark is beautiful and how I view the world – something to hope for across the whole earth.
Love Tom jones, and I’ve seen him live twice, once in Australia and once in England. He just gets better with age.
Great post. Have a really lovely day.

    1. Thanks for popping by, Pamela! Yes, my turtle couple clearly would work well with your theme. Just look at them! It’s as plain as the nose on your face that they are head-over-hills in love. 🙂 Lucky you, you got to see Tom Jones twice! In the early to mid-70s, Mom always had his TV show playing. I remember thinking the women in the audience were just crazy they way they carried on over some guy. lol He was/is a handsome fellow, no doubt about it but I still…that’s not enough to make me go bonkers. I might change my tone if I were standing 10-feet from the man. lol Well…no I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t but Jones has a fantastic voice. I love his style! Artists of yesteryear could sing. Today’s mewsicians…there’s just nothing magical about them. It’s really quite sad, too.

  3. Boy, with all the drawings I have seen so far they would have made a wonderful mural in a baby’s room and this one would stand right out for sure! it’s adorable!!! So, did you see who stopped by today? Yep, our girlfriend Colette! She’s doing a bit better, but I think she’s just not ready to come back. Do make sure you stop by though & say hi… I know you’d never forgive yourself if you didn’t… I didn’t think you’d recognize her sign in. It’s the one with just words. Also, I sent you an email regarding our guest conductor… we have had one email so far, but we’re not going to pick just one. I thought it would be fun to just let anyone who wants too just pick a month! Doesn’t that sound fun??? I knew you’d like it too! ~hehehe~ BIG HUGS….

    1. Marie,

I need to catch up with the last few join us on the dance floor this morning. I got busy yesterday and didn’t a chance to boogie anymore. So, no I didn’t see that Colette joined the fun. I will definitely stop by to see her. Yes, I did get your email with one hopeful temp co-host. That’s pawesome! Oh, definitely get as many participants as possible. This way, you can rotate them to give them all a chance to do it more than once if they’d like. Thanks for boogieing with me.

  4. Cathy, thank you for your patience. Please know that when I don’t comment, I do still read. It is just really a bit chaotic right now. I am struggling with the sarcoid; and, Chloe Jo is not doing well. It’s okay. I know this shall all pass into the great wide open. Thanks for being my friend. Hugs.

    1. Annie,

No thanks needed, my friend. I understand there is life outside of Blogosphere. I’m just glad we connected and have developed a lovely friendship. Saying prayers that everyone is made well on your end and life calms down soon. Take care, dearie!

    1. Beth,

What an interesting mission! I don’t know much about turtles but I remember how cool it was a kid to spot a turtle using trying to get from one side of the road to the other. I reckon, he was heading to a nearby creek. Years ago, DS found a wee turtle in our yard. I have not idea how it wound up there. The only source of water near us is city drainage which runs is above and underneath our property with a big grate in our backyard. I suppose mama turtle laid some eggs near this water source but that’s not a very good place I wouldn’t think. Thanks for visiting!

  5. I’m so sorry, Cathy; your commenting still isn’t working on my iPhone and neither did the ‘tweet this’ button. So, I read this morning but only now commenting – I LOVED your turtles in love; it is one of my favorites of your challenge. And I will echo John – I never realized the true meaning of this song – of course when I was young I wasn’t looking for song meanings. Thank you for the education!

    1. Alana,

I don’t know why it’s not working on your iPhone. Are you using Safari? That’s what I use and didn’t have any problem. Did you get an error like before? Oh well…no worries you’re here and it doesn’t matter when you arrive because you’re welcome anytime! I’m glad that you like my turtle couple, too. When I was younger I definitely didn’t look for the meanings of songs and although I know today there’s usually a hidden message in lyrics I often times do not know what it is until someone tells me.

    1. John,

Thanks for sharing that video. At first glance, I thought what’s this got to do with turtles and then it became clear. I had to laugh. That just seemed so odd for that kid to say, “I like turtles” to the reporterette’s question. lol I had no clue about the backstory to ‘Green Green Grass of Home”. That’s just so sad. I’m horrible with decoding song lyrics. I usually learn the meaning either through friends like you or while doing a little sleuthing when I comply my mewis playlists. Have an awesome day. I’ll be by to see you soon!

    1. Sandee,

I am not quite sure if it’s okay to join Awww Mondays party, so thanks for linking me up. You’re a Tee-terrific friend. 🙂

    1. Eugenia,

Many thanks, dear. I’m so glad my little turtle couple is getting much adoration from my friends. They are too in love to notice, though. 🙂

  6. I love your turtles and you spark for thi week. You can create so much on a computer or ipad these days. Yes, I supposed I am a rebel. MOL!

    1. Cathy,

There’s a little rebel in us all, I think. lol Oh, yes there is so much you can do with electronics today that it blows the mind. Thanks for stopping by to boogie with me. I’m heading your way soon! 😉

    1. Patrick,

I’m delighted to see you on the dance floor. You’re very sweet. Thanks for your words of praise. I’m pretty sure I don’t deserve them but I appreciate it all the same. You’re a kind friend.

    1. Jacqui,

The iPad is an amazing tool. I think it’s because of DH encouragement I find inspiration to keep pursuing what makes me happy. Should I turn out to be the next da Vinci then it’ll all be because of him! Thanks for visiting, my friend.

  7. Such cute turtles! I think I agree with Tom, may be the best so far. To bad it wasn’t Tuesday and then your T’s would be complete 🙂

    1. Janet,

Yeah, it would’ve been cool if the letter ‘T’ fell on Tuesday. 🙂 Ah, you and Tom both are so sweet to say this is my best work so far! I enjoyed drawing this couple a lot and I must admit they are a sweet together!

  8. Oh the turtle couple is so cute and so very sweet…I love this drawing you created and maybe Tom Jones is singing for them regardless of the song, he has a great voice. All 3 BOTB singers were great so I’m aok with Bette winning. Hahahaa that’s funny what I wrote…like I would tear the house apart if my choice didn’t win…hahaha.

    1. Birgit,

It could be that Tom Jones is singing to the cute turtle couple. Jones had a fabulous voice and stage presence back in the day. I’m sure he still makes women’s hearts skip a beat in his audience. 🙂

  9. I love your turtle couple, so cute. I had never heard that Tom Jones song , nice choice. Thanks for hosting. XO

    1. Ellen,

I’m not sure that I knew Tom Jones did it before now, either. While visiting John from The Sound of One Hand Typing I was inspired by his playlist which featured this track and I knew it would be good for this week’s theme. However, I did not know the story behind the lyrics that John shared in comments. Have a great week!

  10. Awwww! That turtle couple is adorable!! Glad you ‘upgraded’ – you will love the versatility, Princess Nagger graduated from paper sketches and drawings to a drawing tablet connected to her PC (actually, it was mine – she ‘borrowed’ it but somehow it’s become a permanent fixture on her desk…heh!) she was a little thrown at first by the learning curve, but now it’s like second nature to her. I love getting to see both of you grow exponentially as awesome artists! 🙂

LOVE your song choices, as usual, Cathy! Thanks so much for the dance! 🙂

    1. Stacy,

I am glad DH got me the Apple Pencil to go with my iPad. It’s a fabulous, convenient way to have a complete arts package literally at my fingertips without the clutter. I bet there’s a way to use the iPad with my Mac but haven’t looked into that option yet but thanks for planting a seed in my head. I’ll check into this after the challenge. I was sure by now Princess Nagger was using an electronic tablet to create her artwork on and am glad to hear that I was right. Like anything, there’s always a learning curve which requires patience to figure out. Perhaps, she needs to start her own art blog. It would be great fun for her to express herself. I hope she keeps nurturing her talent. It’s so easy to push passions aside as one passes through the many phases of life. Thanks for sharing this dance with me, my friend and have a good week!

    1. Seema,

Procreate offers lots of cool effects to select from to give my sketch the realistic effect from the various digital tools to achieve the look I’m after. There isn’t a mobile app I haven’t tired yet that does as much as it. I’m testing out Adobe Sketch and Adobe Draw. After playing with both for several minutes yesterday, I think I like Adobe Sketch the best between the two but it still no match for Procreate. It’s fun to discover what drawing apps can do. Thanks for visiting. 🙂

      1. I am not sure if Procreate is on Android. However, I have a very basic smartphone and prefer to do the editing on my laptop.

I’ll see if I can get a downloadable version for Windows.

        Thanks for recommendation.

  11. Hi, Cathy!

Your turtle couple drawing is absolutely adorable, so cute and colorful. To me it is the star of this year’s A To Z. The tortoises look like they’re getting ready to smooch or perhaps just engage in a very slow, turtle paced, slow dance. 🙂 Nicely done, dear friend!

You’re right, Cathy. “T” is for Tom, and that includes your good friend Shady Tom. I well remember Welshman Tom Jones singing his international hit “Green, Green Grass of Home,” a single that spent seven weeks atop of the UK chart and brushed the top 10 stateside. I did some reading and learned for the first time that the tear-jerker of a song as originally recorded by country artist Johnny Darrell and made popular by Porter Wagoner, the country great who introduced Dolly Parton to the world on his television show. The TV station where I worked in the 70s carried The Porter Wagoner Show. “Green, Green Grass” was also recorded by Bobby Bare and Jerry Lee Lewis, but it was Tom Jones who gained the biggest hit from it.

I am delighted to learn that Bette Midler’s lullaby won the BOTB and that your ears again matched mine.

Thank you, dear friend Cathy, and have a T-rrific day!

    1. Thomas, I never knew that about “Green Green Grass of Home.” I used to catch Porter and Dolly on WGN in Chicago. That wasn’t where you worked, is it?

Did you know that Dolly’s song “I Will Always Love You” was a farewell to Porter when she left his show for fame and fortune?

      1. Hi, John!

Thanks for asking, my friend! No, I never lived in Chicago. I worked at WGAL-TV 8, an NBC affiliate serving the Lancaster – York- Harrisburg coverage market of Central Pennsylvania. I did not know that about Dolly’s song. Thanks for sharing, John!

      2. John,

I think I recall reading that this song was a goodbye to Porter but I couldn’t recall why. Thanks for the sharing this factoid.

    2. Tom,

Whew, it’s just been one of those days! I’m sorry for not responding before now, dear friend. WOW, thank you for such words of praise! I’m happy that you like my cute turtle couple. I’m pleased with how they turned out. I opened a Zazzle store and added a couple of my images to a few products. I don’t know if it’ll do anything but I thought why not give it a try. What do I have to lose? I do remember it was Porter who introduced Dolly but she got her start on the Cass Walker Radio Show in Knoxville. Of course, that was many years before we moved here but I do Cass Walker was still a fixture when we settled here. You’re right about the chart stats regarding the popularity of Green Green Grass of Home which I found interesting. Tom Jones covering a country song seemed odd but he did a fantastic job. Well…let me dash for now. It’ll be dinner time soon and then it’s off to bed we go. Thanks for visiting, my friend, and have a good evening!
