Which would you rather have cake in the house or by the ocean?

Cake by the Ocean is too risque, I think I’d rather have cake in the house.  Cake by the ocean isn’t the kind of cake I’m talking about today, so don’t get your knickers in bunch. This isn’t an x-rated post, folks!  I usually go with what pops in my mind.  Thinking about Rain’s theme today, DNCE’s uptempo song jumped right into my head.  The tune puts ya in the mood to move and puts ya in good mood which brings me to Rain prompt.  Yep, you guessed it, it’s ‘Cake’.  Over the years, especially when the children were small I got creative sometimes with their birthday cakes.  Here are few examples in no particular order. Warning!! The artwork isn’t the best but that’s not the point of the my creations, it’s the joy it gave to my young ones.

DS son’s 2nd birthday
You might remember the castle cake since I used this picture last year with y’all.
DD1’s 8th birthday
DD1’s 30th bday
Strawberry shortcake for last year’s 4th feast
Easter 2001 coconut bunny cake
DD2’s 11th birthday. She was big into Hello Kitty.
DD1’s 13th bday
DD2 & SIL are no longer married but I made this cake for them, since they got married at the courthouse
The kids made this cake for my birthday in 1995

As I mentioned the artwork isn’t the best but the end results were the smiles on faces that matter most, the fun experience, and the fond lasting memories.

I didn’t know if I’d have an opportunity to sketch anything but I managed to squeeze it in while at DH’s dental appointment and finished it up this morning.  I give you, “You  can’t have your cake and eat it, too.  Unless, you’re me.” 🙂

This week’s Thankful Thursday

I’m thankful DH’s dental appointment went well.  The dentist didn’t have too much trouble getting his temporary crowns off.  He was in and out in about half an hour.  We thought it would take more like an hour and a half.  That’s how I was in when I got my bridge seated.

I’m thankful that we finally met our realtor last weekend for the first time in the two years we’ve been working with him.  He showed us a house.  We really liked it but it was in need of big dollar repairs and since they were wanting all offers by 8pm Saturday night we threw one out knowing that it probably wouldn’t be accepted and we were okay with that.  You never know what God has planned, right?

I’m thankful to have another year of A to Z behind me.  It was a fun ride but a busy one and one I wasn’t nearly prepared for but mostly I’m thankful for my all of my friends, especially those of you who’ve known the longest in Blogosphere who frequently visited last month and encouraged me.  I’m indeed blessed!

And, in general I’m thankful for all things big and small because everything that’s given to me is from God. 🙂

I’m winding things up today with Kat’s Writing Workshop.  I’m borrowing her prompt to share a recipe I know by heart.

When we were newly married the one thing I looked forward to when going home for visits was my late MIL’s fresh, home-made buttermilk biscuits.  She was a master at it!  In the early years I was in school and had little time to devote to perfecting my culinary arts.  Things didn’t improve after graduating. In fact, it wasn’t until after I left the work force I began experimenting in the kitchen.  My first attempts to make biscuits didn’t produce good results.  On one of our visits home I asked my MIL if she’d show me the tricks of her trade.  I followed her lead, wrote down instructions, and things worked really well in kitchen.  I went home equipped to do repeat what I learned and Whoa-lah, a biscuit maker was born!!  DH is a huge bread eater.  It wasn’t uncommon for me to make a double batch every other week, especially with the kids still under our roof.  Nowadays, I a single batch is more than enough but that largely depends on DH’s mood and how fast he can go through them.  Okay, I help but he eats more of them than me. 🙂

I’m heading over to Rain’s Garden to browse through the gallery of artistry.  You’re welcome to follow along.

Last month was an epic fail for me to keep my routine posts going, other than 4M.  This week I’m trying to redeem myself by jumping right back into things even though I have a lot of A2Z catching up to do but that’s alright.  I’m taking my time on all accounts because blogging is meant to be fun, not a chore.  Have a doodletastic day Come join the fun!

I sketched a girl popping out of a cake for DH’s birthday last July which has a number of textures – glitter, grunge, paints, pencils, and more!

  1. Oh I LOVE all of those cakes you made! Especially the bunny!!! 🙂 I haven’t made too many themed cakes in my life, probably mostly just for Halloween! Your sketch is adorable, and I remember the one you made for your DH last year! 🙂

  2. Look at all those happy celebrations. I love that you have photos of them! Also, I’m kind of ashamed at how many times I’ve jammed out to Cake by the Ocean and I didn’t even realize that was what they were saying. I had no idea the name of the song was Cake by the Ocean. lol

    1. Kat,

Although initially I didn’t know the meaning behind ‘Cake by the Ocean’ but even after I found out, I still enjoy boogieing to the beat. Don’t be a shame, enjoy the song! 😉

    1. Kathe,

No one can turn cake down especially the bakery variety by the ocean, in the house, at the park, in a cafe, … you’re right a slice anywhere works for most people. 🙂

  3. So, I’m another person who had no idea what “cake by the ocean” meant. And, as a Northerner, I haven’t had a good biscuit in forever You know what, your children will remember those cakes with love, and you certainly decorated them with lots of love. And a wedding cake, too. My youngest first cousin just celebrated her 26th wedding anniversary yesterday and it made me think back to all the cakes she decorated in her youth – it helped her put herself through college and she would decorate cakes for people she worked with after she started to work. My respect for anyone who can do that!

    1. Alana,

I never got why biscuits aren’t a common thing up north. Do you know why that is? The recipe is easy. Just remember one thing is to not over do the mixing of your biscuit dough and lightly fold it a few times on a flour surface before rolling and cutting out your biscuit rounds. That’s really cool your cousin made & decorated cakes in college. It’s a fun way to release ones’ creative, artsy urges in the kitchen.

  4. You have a beautiful family, Cathy, and love the photos of your cake creations. I am glad the dental appointment went well and thank you for the mention! It’s much appreciated! 😘

    1. Thanks, Eugenia! It’s a shame just how fast the years went with my kiddos. One moment they are small and the next…grown and out of the house!

  5. I’m now educated about “cake by the ocean”–never heard the term before so I looked it up. Um, yeah.

I like to eat by the ocean overlooking the beach. I don’t like eating on the sand. Sand gets in the food.

Those were a lot of nice cake pictures. My youngest daughter posts cake pictures all the time on FB, but she does cake baking for a living and it’s advertising for her. She makes some amazing looking cakes.

    1. Lee,

I didn’t know the meaning behind ‘cake by the ocean’, either. I think I read an online article of one the Jonas brothers explaining the meaning behind the song title. Oh that’s super cool your daughter is a cake baker by trade. I bet she makes some pretty ones, too.

  6. Such beautiful kids and beautiful cakes! Wonderful to have the memories kept in photos. Love the woman jumping out if the cake ! Glad your husbands dental went smoothly, don’t we all just hate going. WellI guess I might be the only one lol, I really hate going, lol, I hope you find the house you’re looking for, it’s exciting to move! Thank you for sharing this fun beautiful delicious post!

    1. Laurie,

Everyone hates going to the dentist! Although, I can deal with these trips easier now than I could when I was younger, I still do not like going. I’m glad you liked the gal jumping out of the birthday cake. I know DH never had a ‘real’ girl to jump out of cake so I thought drawing him one was the next best thing. 🙂

  7. You had a house full of adorable kids and your cake baking is wonderful … and I know they loved it. The question is will they carry on the tradition when they have kids? This post was loaded with goodies,. especially the Buttermilk Biscuit Recipe … can’t wait to try it 🙂 And LOL your lady in the cake that you drew for your husband was a hoot, and I know he loved it, right? And, oh my, Captain and Tennille! . If you remember them, you are in my age group. They were awesome then and still are today thanks to you. Making it through a dental appointment is always something to be grateful for and at my age, I am thankful to still be here. You seem to live a blessed life … hope you get the house you want 🙂

    1. Andrea,

I hope my daughter does some of the same things with her daughter. For now this is our only grandchild. I think our son would like to have a family someday when he finds the right gal. Our other daughter has no interest in having kids. But, regardless if they have children they can incorporate family traditions into their lives with their significant other for a richer, happier life. I’m sure we’re close in age. This is my last year of my 50s. It’s hard to believe in December I’ll be entering a new decade. How on earth did I get to be this old anyhow? Oh well…I’m forever young at heart. Thanks for visiting, my dear.

  8. Thank you for the recipe. The rolls look good. And all your cakes came out great too. XO

    1. Thanks Ellen! There’s nothing like good ole buttermilk biscuits. I’m just about ready to make a big ole breakfast consisting of biscuits, gravy, eggs, the works! I haven’t done that in awhile, so I need to right this wrong soon.

  9. Did someone say cake? Your home made cakes look like fun for the whole family.

Your sketches always make me smile, you do so well.

Since i’m not so good with biscuits, i am going to try your way, thanks!

  10. You are a great cake decorator, Cathy. Color me extremely impressed, dear. I also really LOVE the cake you drew for your husband. It actually made me laugh and wonder what he thought when he saw it.

  11. Your little ones were most cute and the cakes. Yummy. I’ve not had cake in a very long time, but the last slice was chocolate cakes with the most wonderful chocolate icing. I would love to have a piece of that cake right now.

Glad hubby’s dentist appointment went so well. Things will be far better for him now.

I loved your A2Z last month. I had a great time. I’m guessing you’ll be working on next years theme soon.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

I agree getting dental work done now is better than waiting. We’re both trying to nip problems in the bud now. In 10, 20, 30 years we might not feel good enough or too stubborn to have the work done. Or, maybe not have the money. Dental cost is expensive and most of it is out of pocket now. Later it’ll be all out of pocket I’m sure. I don’t know if Medicare pays for these things. I’m delighted you enjoyed my Looney Tunes Art Sketch series. I haven’t begun on next year’s illustrations. I’m not sure what I want to do just yet but it’ll come to me before next April. 🙂

  12. You’ve made some wonderful cakes for your kids over the years and I’m sure they will always treasure their memories of your special artistry on their behalf!

  13. These are all nice memories of special events of a cake. Your painted drawings are great with this and the video. Great recipe!
    Happy Day, Elke

  14. Cake always makes things better. I’m glad to hear that the dental thing went well, that’s always good. Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

    1. Brian,

Yeah, we were super glad things went well for DH. Dental work isn’t fun. Thanks for dropping in for a visit, furriend!

    1. Christine,

You’re welcome. Biscuit making is a regular thing for me to make around here. There’s nothing like fresh hot biscuits straight from the oven with a little squeeze of honey. That’s golden delicious good!

  15. Yay the second time in blogland I get to hear Cake by the Ocean. It is a great dance song. Lots of beautiful cakes here and I love your drawing of the gal jumping out of the cake. Glad the dentist went well. I had an appt on Monday to talk possible surgery. Thank the gods that the trouble was sinus and not the old root canal. Good luck on buying a new house and have the best day today.

    1. Nicole,

Did someone else use “Cake by the Ocean” for the theme? If so, that’s pretty cool. My brain isn’t processing things right, so you talked about surgery but you don’t have to have it? I hope not! House hunting right now is tricky. There’s plenty on the market but the pricing isn’t good for us because listings are in most cases $100k over where it would’ve been a short time ago. We’re getting an influx of people from California and New York coming here. They think everything is a bargain driving costs up for locals. I can’t blame a home owner for wanting to take advantage of the surge but it’s tough for folks like us. Oh well…this can’t last forever…right? Let’s hope not anyhow. We got our pre-approval in the works so we’ll be ready when we find the perfect place. 🙂
