What’s Is Your Color? Day 9 – G2KM Blog Challenge

age four and half taken around the time my little brother was born

Color.  I love bright, vivid colors, as well as soft, subtle colors.  Sometimes, my mood reflects my tender side and I’m compelled to wear pink or if I’m feeling crazy I may wear red. How does one come to decide what is their favorite color? Hmm, interesting, is it not?

When I was in the 5th grade, our elementary school merged with another near-by school.  I was really nervous about meeting the new kids.  My mother had me to wear a purple skirt & blouse the first day of school.  It was an adorable outfit. I recall sitting in my English class, looking around skittish at the sea of new faces. The whole changing classes made me feel so insecure. I didn’t see my best friend anywhere, but I wouldn’t because she was in a different level of 5th grade than me. She was in 5-1 and I was in 5-2. “What does this mean,” you ask. As you may have guessed 5-1 kids were A/B students and 5-2 were B/C students. I was just an average Joe or… Joetta (That’s my mother’s name.)

I noticed two girls looking at me. Was I dressed weird? Did I have a chocolate milk mustache? Why were they staring at me?  I became uncomfortable with their eyes on me as they whispered.  Then one of the girls said, “Hey, Purple Girl.” I looked down at my clothing and then my eyes met theirs.  We all smiled.  A new friendship formed.  My nervousness quietened and the rest of the day, I was known as the ‘Purple Girl’ by two new friends.  Sweet memories, huh?

Oddly, I had never thought about purple being anything special to me until that day and from there on, it sort of morphed into my favorite color for fun things – pens, eye shadows, glitter, paper, etcetera. Now when my family wants to buy me anything, it usually has a purple theme.  What sweeties they are!  I appreciate their gestures of making life festive for me.  And so, this is how purple became my favorite color.  The End!

  1. @Donnie & Caren…ya know, I was a bit apprehensive about writing about my fave color. It seemed liked I reaching for something to post. In truth, I was. But, as I began putting my thoughts on my blog, it felt like a stroll through time reliving a fond memory that had been shelved somewhere in my mind. It filled my senses with sweetness. The little girl who dubbed me, ‘Purple Girl’, is no longer apart of this world. Perhaps, she’s telling the angels about the ‘Purple Girl’ she met and they, too, are smiling because purple is one of those fun colors God created for our pleasure.

  3. @Linda…isn’t that the truth, purple is a happy color. Anytime I see something purple, my face lights up. One time I saw a purple metallic car and said, “Okay, I like purple, but I draw the line with using it for my first picks of automobilie colors.” LOL Maybe nail polish, but not paint for a car. Too garish! Thanks for visiting.

  4. Hi Cathy…I loved this post.
My favorite “happy” color is purple too.

When I was a child I just loved purple. When I colored a girl’s dress in my color book I would usually pick purple. I had a purple bedspread and curtains…and my first little one inch “high heals” as a girl of 10 were purple…to match my favorite purple dress.

As an adult I have continued to love purple, and everyone knows I love it. I may not make everything in my house purple…or even wear it all of the time…but it continues to make me feel happy when I look at it. (:>)
