What might I find on an island?

An update to my A2Z Pinup Girl Series ‘O’ for Oops Procreate illustration

What might I find on an island?  Well most certainly there’s an ISLAND GIRL (Conkarah) hanging around, maybe laying out on the beach under a COCONUT TREE (Shakira) that is until she remembers she forgot her sun tan lotion and has to SHIMMY, SHIMMY, KO-KO-BOP (Little Anthony and the Imperials) to the pharmacy on the corner of Tropical Isle and Paradise Boulevard of her ISLAND IN THE SUN (Weezer) home.  Sometimes, she needs to escape the flurry of terrorists (aka tourist) and asks the captain of the BANANA BOAT SONG (DAY-O) (Harry Belafonte) to give her lift to the main land.

Welcome to Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me!  This week it’s 🌴 island theme songs.🌴   No pina coladas – virgin or otherwise on the dance floor, my friends. Set it down and let’s boogie!

DISCLOSURE…this is a mewsic linky party, which means all participates are sharing songs that one can listen to from YouTube or Vimeo and a not a post about mewsic or mewsicians.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

Before I scat I have to share with you a yummy recipe I tried,  Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken.  This is a knock off recipe of the dish Chuy’s has on their menu and if my memory serves me correctly then this is super close to the restaurant version.   I made a few changes and definitely will make it again in the near future. That’s a wrap for now. Have a boogietastic week! X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. Oooh, I love what you did with the theme, Cathy! Love all your song choices! I’d love to be on a tropical island right about now… 😉

    1. Stacy,

A tropical island really doesn’t do a lot for me. I think the only time I’d dream about such things was when I was a kid. I thought it would be super neat to go to Hawaii but as time went by that changed for me. I guess if I had tons of money then maybe I’d visit the Hawaiian islands or other tropical paradises but overall I’d rather spend my time in the mountains. 🙂 The theme was really fun, though.

  2. HI CAT! I know I’m not usually here on Friday, but I wanted to tell you to have a fantastic weekend. You are always in my heart & on my mind and remember that always. Next week Tuesday it will start… I have to go for a Covid test to get my shot for my back & leg & maybe I won’t have so much pain that I’ve been having for the last two weeks, it’s been driving me crazy! You see that’s why I’ve been missing in action here & there! So very sorry! Always remember here or not I love ya lots! HUGS & HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! HUGS… HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

    1. Marie,

Don’t worry about a thing, dearie! I know you’re in a lot of pain and I hope you’ll find relief very soon. Saying prayers for you always. Have a good weekend!

  3. I didn’t know the first two songs but I did know the last three, and Day-O has been a favorite since I was a little girl. Speaking of being a little girl, I remember my Mom having a wringer washing machine. Those things were dangerous! I enjoyed this theme; technically, I was born on an island (Long Island, in New York State) and, actually, a peninsula connected to that island called The Rockaways. I lived a block from the ocean for my first 5 months of life. So a piece of me belongs to the ocean, I guess!

    1. Alana,

Those old fashion washing machine are dangerous. I got my arm caught in the wringer when I was little but I wasn’t hurt just scared to death. Thanks for boogieing with me, darlin’!

  4. That’s a lovely drawing, Granny remembers those dry makers (don’t know the name in English) her aunt had one and it was real fun to play with 😀 Those were some great songs, I think we have to dance now, but first a banana for more energy 😉 Pawkisses for a Happy Week ahead, CK and thanks for the shout out. You can safely visit out site, Google chrome does that with almost every blog and it’s only because of the pictures, meaning, that they can be stolen, because they’re not secured🤷‍🐾😽💞

    1. Binky,

Do you mean ‘dry markers’? If so, here in America they are called Dry-Erase Markers. You use them on a white board and easily erase away the alcohol based ink. We still have our large white board on the wall from the days I home schooled our children. You have me a little stumped with this part of your comment

Was this intended for someone else because I hoped back over to your blog to see if I asked a question but am not seeing it on yesterday’s post? But, I do realize that any photo shared on the net unless it’s properly anchored or encrypted with a watermark can be lifted from your site. I’ve tried a few freebie things to keep my photos secure but it wound up being more trouble than it was worth. Maybe one day I’ll do more to protect my images. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, furriend!

      1. MOL…No, I mean the washing machine thingie to wring your clothes dry 😀 Granny has to do something about her English, I think I have her send to school again…MOL… You not gave me a shout out on Caturday about the security? So that means you’re not CK of the Stunning Keisha…OMC…I always thought you were that cat…MOL😹 Sorry Cathy, this is so embarrissing…🙊🙈

        1. Binky,

That’s okay, Sweetie! That’s a different Cathy. I’m not sure what the actual name for that part of the machine was called but we always referred to it as the wringer. It couldn’t be that simple now, could it? Tell Granny her English is fabulous! I used to penpal when dinosaurs roamed the earth so I’m use to the broken English but in all fairness most of my pen friends did quite well. There were only I transition wasn’t nearly as smooth. I’m always in awe of anyone outside the US who speaks and writes English well. I don’t think I’d do well with a foreign language. I’d probably do better writing it then speaking it with my horrible hearing. Have a good afternoon/evening, dear furriend!

  5. That’s such a fun drawing! Like Sandee said, we had one of those washers too. That was a really nice tune.

    1. Brian,

Anyone who’s in their late 50s and older probably knew someone who had one of those old washers. My MIL used hers for years after she had an electronic washer. I think she used it for larger items like quilts and blankets. The larger capacity machines even when they were still living hardly had room for movement for these things. I remember having to take our queen sized blanket to the laundry mat because the agitator couldn’t move freely. Our current washer handles such loads better. The only thing I hate about our new machine is it weighs the load figuring out the water level which is stupid. It never gets it right for lighter loads even with the ‘deep fill’ option. If I can the next machine we buy will not be a self-weighing kind. Technology has its perks but the setbacks are still there.

  6. Nice drawing. It reminds me of the wringer/washer my mother used to have when I was just a little kid in the fifties. My grandmother also had one that she used in her basement. I’m glad we don’t have to deal with those now.

Interesting approach to the island song list.

    1. Lee,

Those old fashion washers were a tons more work than what we do today for sure. It was a better than a washboard and probably appreciated by the women of those times. I’m so glad to live in this moment for its conveniences. It’s a blessing. Thanks for joining me for my island themed playlist!

    1. John,

Ah, you caught on! I love it when someone picks up on what I did. 🙂 I arranged the song set to match the my introduction to my playlist. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, my friend!

  7. Love the sketch. We had a washer like that when I was a kid. I remember it well. Hard work.

    Love the video. Beautiful.

Awww on that adorable pup. Make me smile.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Thanks for visiting, Sandee! My grandmother had an old washer like this but I don’t recall Mom having one. I reckon she used Grandma’s. My parents didn’t have a lot when I was a kid but in those early years things looking back I sense was even tighter. It’s funny how we survived with far less than people act today.

  8. I really like the Shakira song but are you kidding me? Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko Ko Bop!!! I haven’t heard that in decades! I just had a flashback to watching Dick Clark’s American Bandstand when I would get home from school. Thanks for the memories.

    1. Driller,

Shakira’s song discovery was a nice one to make. I’m glad you liked it, too. “Shimmy, Shimmy Ko Ko Bop” jump out at me when I was looking for possibilities. It’s such a fun song! American Bandstand was a favorite weekend past time for me in my tween and teen years. TV viewing of the past will never be rivaled these days or days to come!

  9. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Awww-some 4M Monday to you, dear friend! How was your weekend?

I am happy to see your letter “O” pinup “Oops” brought back In Living Color. The pretty woman with her dress caught in the wringer is one of the most iconic images of vintage pinup art. Your sketch looks terrific in color.

When I saw the song title “Island Girl” I thought you were going to post the Elton John chart-topper from late 1975. It was refreshing to hear a different “Island Girl” song, this one by reggae star Conkarah, and to see the exciting island girl depicted in his video. At the end she is nowhere to be found, leading us to believe he fell asleep in that hammock and merely had a dream about her. I also very much enjoyed the singing style of prolific Colombian singer and songwriter Shakira as she sang “Coconut Tree,” a song from her most recent album El Dorado released in 2017. As you might expect, I well remember that Little Anthony hit from my youth. I remember first getting the song on a various artists album I bought. The Harry Belafonte single was huge on the radio and TV when I was a boy, The colorful video by the LA based alt rock band Weezer depicts a large mask-free gathering, the kind of scene that now seems like ancient history as we plod through the masked misery of 2020. I love the picture of the dog on the beach wearing a captain’s cap. Maybe he is playing the role of The Skipper in an all-dog production of Gilligan’s Island. 🙂 Hey, there’s another good island song – the castaways theme from that hit TV series.

Mrs. Shady makes chicken often and I will share your recipe with her. Thank you for the mewsic and fun to start the week off right. Stay safe and well and I will see you soon, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

I purposely stayed away from Elton’s “Island Girl” song to try to avoid repeating it on the dance floor. I try to do this for all of my song picks but this go around another managed to match three of my songs. I didn’t do well keeping my selections unique enough it seems. 🙂 Conkarah’s reggae version suited the theme better making you it feel more authentic and the video was loads of fun! Little Anthony’s hit released the year DH was born and the iconic song continues to make us smile all these years later. Oh, I wish I thought to use the theme song fro Gilligan’s Island. That would’ve been super fun! Let me know if Mrs. S makes the chicken recipe. If you like Mexican food then I’m confident you’ll love it! Thanks for joining me yesterday, my friend. You’re the best!
