Les threw out a really cool prompt last week on Tuesday Coffee Chat. I really and truly wanted to join in, but you know the old saying, life happens? That pretty much sums things up, but it just so happens life is happening in a good sort of way. So… “What’s been going on”, you say?
I’ll let the cat out of the bag. DH & I are planning our upcoming staycation. This is our time to have downtime without the ginormous expensive of a full-fledged vacation. Our staycation equals or surpasses its rival in total fun-ness and relaxation. That being said, then you what goes into anything remotely resembling a vacation requires — lots and lots of preparations!
Now, getting back to Les’ prompt… since I missed out linking up to all that fun, I thought I’d just go ahead with using “my favorite villain(s)” for today’s randomness. Yeah, right I know having a theme doesn’t equal random chatter. Be as it is, this is precisely what I’m writing about today. big cheesy grin
Who remembers the prime-time TV soap, Dallas? We watched it sporadically. Enough to carry on a decent conversation about the characters with our fellow Sunday School class who was deeply enthralled by the program. The finale of season two had a gem of a cliff hanger. The evil Oil Tycoon, J.R. Ewing, the man everyone loved to hate, got what he had coming to him leaving Dallas fans from around the globe with a shocking.” Who shot J.R.?”
If you have Amazon Prime, then you can rent it on Instant Video for $1.99 per episode, except you get both seasons 1 & 2 for the same price. Also, they have Dallas 2012 season one. I knew they were working on bringing back the show, but I never heard a peep about it until now! Will J.R. still be the man you love to hate? Can you guess what I’m going to be watching soon?
There have many other memorable villains in TV & film: the horrible & intellectual Hannibal Lector (Silence of the Lame) or the quite & creepy Norman Bates (Psycho) or the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz) or Darth Vader (Star Wars Trilogy) but none stand out in my mind with that same “love/hate” off-screen love affair as most of us felt with Larry Hagman’s factious role as J.R. Ewing. He made evil look kinda of fun. I think it has something to do with our own dark side wanting to be unleashed. Personally, I am far too conservative and nice to act this horrible, so I am left to daydream what it would be like to walk in J.R.’s shoes without any real-life damage done. After all, that’s really better now, isn’t it?
Before I hop over to visit my usual group of buddies today, I want to leave you with this.
Did I get you in the mood for Dallas?
In the spirit of maintaining a random front, I will toss out my off-the-wall goings-on.
- DS is now employed, part-time.
- Data recovery a success, but not totally imported onto the new hard drive.
- Progress made with sorting & organizing around the house.
- Changed exercise strategy – back to doing DVD routines.
- Hurt calf muscle in right leg – BLAH! Must continue the fight…
Have a terrific Tuesday!

Curse you! I now have the theme song in my head…
I was not a big fan of “Dallas”. I liked Larry Hagman in “I dream of Jeanie”. Even now I give soap operas a miss.
I can remember my mom settling in every Friday night to watch Dallas. Sometimes I would be asleep on the floor with my blanket and giant pillow – having just watched Dukes of Hazard. At least she thought I was asleep — I couldn’t resist the lure of J.R. even at such a young age. Plus having Bobby as the good guy foil to his bad guy. When I was older, I would always catch the re-runs, and loved to hate him even more th 2nd time around.
I have yet to catch the new show – not sure we get that channel in Canada. So I will be keeping on eye on Netflix and hoping it arrives.
thanks for linking up – no worries about doing last weeks’ theme. I’m country — we’re always just glad you showed up 🙂
<3
Like you, I watched the original Dallas only sporadically (I was more into Knott’s Landing) but I did catch the first few episodes of the 2012 version (then my DVR was too overloaded and I missed the subsequent ones). From what I can tell, JR is still just as conniving as he was in the original! 🙂
Looking forward to hearing all about your staycation! 🙂
Fall Finally Arrives with Hotel Transylvania, Body by Vi Challenge Accepted, Comic Moment, Banana Spider and Genius Birthday Card
I loved to hate JR… and then new version of Dallas he is just the same ‘bad’ guy all over again.
Great post!
I was a big JR fan back in the day – bet those fashions & hairstyles would be hilarious to revisit
