I”m totally flat lining here this morning on a subject to talk about. Hopefully, I will bringing to you an opportunity to get your very own free WordPress blog in the upcoming days. If that set your ears on high alert, then let me know that you’re ready to take the bait and wanna learn more.

Let me grab another cup of coffee and kick of things with this morning’s Time Out For Mom prompt is…

The Secret to Passion
How does one find their passion?

This is an interesting subject. Before I go further, let me state Les isn’t necessarily speaking of sexual passion. Although, that can be a challenge to find sometimes, too. That topic is good for another day…another post, eh?

I am one of these happy-go-lucky types. What this means is, I look to myself for inner happiness. No one, (aside for Jesus) or no thing can fill me with happiness. But…I do clearly think ones’ passions are the things that gives a person much joy.

These passions are usually right in front of you in the things that you naturally migrate toward. For me, my passions are found in my creative outlets ~ artsy crafts and writing.

My junior year in high school, I took art. I loved the opportunity to express myself with my limited ability. In retrospect I know that my own lack of confidence hindered what I could do. College life followed by my career, my artsiness got buried.

After I became a SAHM, my creative side emerged again in the late 80s when I became intrigued by painting sweat/t-shirt designs. Of course, not free-hand style. I did have to impervious on occasions when the image transfer failed. I guess a certain amount of art skill lies within. lol

By the late 90s, I was introduced to rubber-stamp art. Applying ink to paper, coordinating card stock colors, and using markers or colored pens on my image calmed my inner self giving me a break from present worries. I always feel like that kid I once was with a box of crayons and a coloring book, watching a picture come to life through a rainbow of shades. This is the one passion that I have actively kept a live and still enjoy to this day.

What’s that you say, what about photography? Sometimes I think passion can be created out of desire to be a part of what makes another person passionate. This is precisely the case with me and how I discovered my love for photography because I wanted to be included in my best friend’s (aka DH) favorite hobby.

In the mid-80s, I took possession of my very own SLR camera, a Nikon FG-20. Shooting anything and everything that I could to learn. Once our first daughter was born, I found my skills to capture those precious first was definitely challenged. After our second child was born, DH got me a Nikon point n’ shoot 35mm camera elevate my photographing frustrations. Using a totally automatic camera was perfect. I got what I wanted with little forethought or talent.

Once the digital photography exploded, we got our first Canon point n’ shoot in 2004. I did not use it much. I felt uncomfortable with it, maybe because I felt like it wasn’t just mine. It was a long time before; we could afford to buy my own digital camera. In 2009 DH got me a Canon DS8800. Having a camera back in my hands from that moment forward only prompted my desire for a big girl camera, a camera that would give me the power to reach my potential greatness. Everything would lay solely in my ability to develop the necessary skill to adjust and compose each shot.

My dream came true in 2012, when my DH got ME a DSLR (Nikon D7000) of my choosing instead of one for him. I felt really clumsy with my big girl camera at first and I feel that I am just now finding my way. Slow learner? A little, but that old familiar lack of confidence sense temporarily blind-sided my view to simply let go and enjoy. I am not looking to work for Natural Geographic or Outdoor Life magazines. I’m just a girl who is taking each day one pleasure at a time.

Cooking and baking is very much like photography in the way I pursued these joys. Although all of my life, I was around others who cooked I found work in the kitchen was not instinctive. However, my desire to be a good cook like my mother or MIL or best girlfriends propelled me to experiment and learn. Again, I wanted to be a part of someone elses’ passion to blend in, exchange ideas, encourage, or even inspire others with my foodie creations. I am not a Martha Stewart in the kitchen, but I am often praised on a job well done and that’s good enough to suit this gal.

I doubt seriously that my passions will ever lead me to a new career as a WAHM. Although, I secretly hope my blog writing may push me in that direction, but if it doesn’t then that’s okay. I will continue on my road of happiness expressing myself through my passions as a photographer, chef, baker, and author. Along the way I will share a cup of coffee with those close with me while we mellow out to some of my favorite tunes or perhaps we’ll bring the house down dancing to the beat.

Stop looking for your passion, its right at your fingertips! If you have a desire, then that’s all that it takes. Sometimes you’ll find that a new passion is only a passing interest. It was fun while it lasted, but then you may discover a talent hidden in the rough, a gift God has loaned to you. It’s your responsibility to step up to the plate to own and makes these passions yours or else…you’ll lose it. Forever!

  1. Definitely interested in the WordPress blog!

I used to dance and when we moved, I had no dance space. My husband has no office space. One of the reasons I like digital photography so much is that it serves my creative outlet. If I could still dance I would do both but since space is limited, photography gives me that outlet now.

  2. Since I retired it has been easy to find passion in ordinary things. I have returned to knitting like I used to when my children were little. Now the grandchildren are the beneficiaries.

  3. I just think it starts with an interest. Then it goes from there.

I like taking pictures I guess because I don’t have much from when I was young,

I always say that only sin against your creator is not to become a fully developed human in all areas.

  4. I have many interests, I find myself lacking time and motivation. When I have the motivation, I don’t have the time, when I have the time, I lack motivation. This is frustrating. I hope that as my boys get older, I will be able to coordinate the two better.

  5. A perfect example of what I was saying; that you don’t have to always FIND your passion — it can be something you cultivate. I think life continues to be interesting and joyous if we continue learning and growing. The practical can never fully fade or be neglected; but pursuing your passions is the jelly inside of the jam roll of life!! LOL
Photography would be on of those newly discovered ones for me too. I actually forgot my big girl camera at home on this holiday — because I am still not used to the idea that I own one! And now here I am about to go into the sugar maple bush for a glorious morning of sap, syrup and pancakes: and no camera. but my trusty iPhone. But….life is what you make it sometimes too.
    Memories will be captured! 🙂
