Tuesday Talk Time: Combat Mode

I’m in total combat mode! Why? I’ve been a major slacker in my dieting. At the start of the New Year I felt charged with enthusiasm to get things cranking. The truth is I just wasn’t emotionally on board. However, warmer weather is on the loom, and it’s painfully clear it’s time to push myself to melt some unwanted pounds pronto. It’s won’t be an easy battle and it may get down right ugly. Determined to my guns and if necessary going completely nuclear with my approach.

I am tracking my daily food-intake with an iPhone app or if you don’t have a smartphone, then you can access My Fitness Pal on the web. I am limiting myself to 700 calories. I truly DO NOT recommend this for you. This is only a temporary move to jump-start my metabolism. I have learned my limitations. At 5’2″ with a current weight of 116.5 my idea calorie range is 1000-1200. The thing is, I know I have to cut my intake by 500 calories a day to burn one pound per/week. What seems like a drastic trim in calories initially, really isn’t for me. One thing that plays against me is my age.  My body’s furnace to burn off calories is slow. Of course, it is never all about dieting. Re-setting my metabolism through food restrictions and exercise will so-to-speak turn up the fire melting those pounds away.

Cardiovascular activity is an essential part in my role to looking and feeling my best. My calories are too low to enlist in boot-camp cardio-aerobics. Doing more than my body has fuel to do will only stress my body, which could cause my body to reserve the calories in the form of fat. That I do not want. My energy level is strong enough to endure  60-minutes on my stationary bike each day. I have to admit a terrible pitfall of mine is sitting for long stretches of time. I aiming to stand more throughout the day. According to Health Status calculator, I can burn 63 calories for every hour that I stand. You can get other calculations by using this site, if you’re interested. Over an 8-hour period at that rate, then I can drop those 500 daily calories without breaking a sweat. That’s cool!

This is off-topic, but then again that’s part of the random fun each Tuesday, right? This question is for seasoned WP bloggers. How do I keep my comments from all being held for moderation? I looked over my settings, and the only one I can see possibly holding things up is the one that says comment author must sign fill out name and email address.

Another thing is since making the switch from Blogger to WP, I have gotten more spam-like commentors. Some of it is obviously spam and some aren’t as easy to figure out. What are some of your sure-fire techniques for spotting those ify few?

While I am on my WP blog subject, I want to know what elements you use, that you think I should use. I have learned WP uses plugins for everything, so please give me a list of your must-have plugins to consider! You can leave your suggestions in my comments or if you would rather, then shoot me an email at curiousasacathy@gmail.com! A friend is always welcomed at my in-box anytime. 😉

Grab a cup of coffee and join me as I visit my lovelies….

Les from Time Out For Mom prompts  us to answer the following question…

What is the one question you would ask everyone you meet?

Without fail, I always ask how the other person and her family are doing? Perhaps, it’s out of politeness or maybe, it’s just an automatic icebreaker for that slight awkward pause at first meet. The next words out of my mouth usually relate to jobs, is your husband still with…or are you working at… Of course, there are occasions when I meet up with someone who is looking particularly fabulous because of weight change, and I immediately ask how did you do it? From a personal stand,  I know how good it makes me feel when someone notices my hard efforts to make unwanted pounds vanish, so I like paying it forward while getting someone’s secret weight lose tips. Everyone likes to have a cheerleader in her pocket, right?

Patrice’s chats on the farmhouse porch questions for this week haven’t gone live yet, but I will revise this part of my post later on in the morning when I have them. Everyday Ruralty

StacyFor now, did someone say coffee? Oh yes, that was me. Hee-Hee! It’s time to get another refill of Joe. As luck will have it, my last stop takes us to Starbuck’s home state to visit Stacy Uncorked. She is now back in Blogosphere doing what she does best  ~ random musings on Random Tuesday Thoughts ! I’m gonna to join her linky party now. Wanna come with?

Have a terrific Tuesday!

  1. Hey Cathy, I swear when I read 700 cal my heart stopped for at least a beat, but then I continued reading and saw how tall (or short) you are – phew – especially compared to me (6’1″) – your normal intake is my diet intake – haha.
Akismet – that is the best one for starters. Get the API key and set it up. I never had a problem with it sending myself to spam like Kim. I have also got the comment author name and email must be filled in set, so that cannot be, why all your comments are held for moderation. If you want to, you can shoot me an email, maybe an admin login and I’ll be happy to have a look, but no pressure 🙂
p.s. and I really do like your blog’s new look – good luck with the sponsors!

    1. You stand almost a foot taller. WOW! I am glad that you understood because I am a petite lady that the decrease in calories isn’t as bad as it first sounds. Of course, I can’t stay at this level indefinitely. It’s not all that hard, but my food options are limited and that gets boring fast.

Yesterday, I looked at Akismet and was ready to get my API Key, but they are asking for a donation. At first, I didn’t want to do this. However, I may consider doing it even, if it’s only for this year just to see how it benefits me. Thanks for the offer to look at my settings. I’ll definitely keep this in mind!

      1. I know about the donation, but you don’t have to do it. Try it out first and then donate, if you like it. That is what I am doing. Or did.

    1. Hmmm, that’s interesting an error message. Well…I’m not sure why that is, but I’m happy you finally made it over to check out my new blog! 😉

  2. I find that the spam thing comes and goes. There was a time for some reason I was getting over a hundred per day!! Now, they never appeared on my blog because my filter did work — but I still had to go in and delete them every day from my moderation page. By not responding or clicking on any of them — I found they eventually all dwindled and disappeared. Now I haven’t received on in months. I think they look for unsuspecting and unsavy bloggers who will click their links. then they get ya.
I like your idea to include a compliment about the person. Who doesn’t want a cheerleader indeed! And it’s nice to get feedback about certain things you have done: like a diet, or new hair style, published recently – whatever.

    1. I am going to have to dig a little deeper to figure out why every thing is being held, not just the spam. I am sure I did to tweak the settings and see why non-spam comments are being kept. Oh well…this is all part of the learning curve of learning how WP works, right?

  3. I hate spammers. They come so often I just hand to moderate all my comments. It is a little time consuming but well worth it.

  4. I lost 5 pounds while I was on my last cruise. I enjoyed all of the meals without reducing my calories however because the weather was so good I was able to take a walk after every meal – 4 laps around the deck is a mile. We also swam in the afternoon and then we danced before and after dinner. I have managed to keep it off now that I am home. I would say exercise is the key to good weight management. Good luck!

  5. When I was with WP, I used Aksimet for spam. However, Akismet blocks me from time to time, and I’m not sure why. I have had to contact them several times to remove myself from their blacklist of EVERYWHERE. And I have never left a spammy comment. anywhere. I liked WP, just can’t justify the cost of a domain or hosting, and don’t like the restrictions that come with WP free.

I also always ask how someone is doing. Really, what else can you ask, unless your job dictates something different?

  6. You give me so much to think about! I still am trying to get comfortable with Google+, but wonder about Word Press. I am not sure there is a real “best” option.

    1. One thing to keep in mind is if you wish to earn money with your blog, then I have read that sponsors look favorably first on those who self-host their blogs. Of course, there are many dedicated bloggers who own free blogs. That being said, anything that’s free comes with a price when one isn’t in control. What I mean is at anytime your free blog can be yanked or access denied for whatever reason(s) deemed by the free blog host. This bothered me the entire time I had my Blogspot blog. Over all, my experience with WP is a good one. I am still learning and welcome suggestions from anyone.

    2. I use MyFitnessPal too. I use the 2000 calories, which was recommended for my height and weight. It’s harder to stick to as one would think. I really need to get to the gym. The combination of watching calories and exercises works me for (when I stick to it).

      1. Oh, definitely calorie watching and exercising works for me, too. I just hate having to moderate every little bit and move. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a teenagers metabolism again?
