T?T on hold while I have a little Q&A fun

Posted on May 8, 2014

This week I am not on top of my blogging game. Meaning, I have not posted every day like usual. I am taking things slow to figure out the best approach to join in on some of my favorite hops without sacrificing my sanity. That being said, my regular write-up for Thursday Questions and Thoughts is on hold until I can gently massage everything into order next week, hopefully.  Hop with me, as I visit a couple of my lovelies this morning for a little Q&A fun!

My first stop takes me to Patrice’s @ Everyday Ruralty for  Chats on the farmhouse porch. This week, she asks:

  1. Do you like beans? (the dried bean variety) What do you like them in? I do like dried beans. Pinto beans are my over-all favorite. I just cook them up and eat them with cornbread ~ yum! Red beans or kidney beans are good to use in my chili. I also like using red beans when I make red beans and rice. Northern beans are another that’s good plain, but I have used them in making white chili and that’s really good soup. Cooked navy beans are good with a little seasoning, but I usually use them when I make baked beans. I don’t cook beans too often, but when I do I make a large pot of something for several meals.
  2. Does your house have enough storage? N-O, no! This is one of the main reasons why I want to find my dream home so I can finally be in a place where life is a bit easier to finding stuff or putting stuff away.
  3. Do you have any childhood memories of a store? The local Five and Dime, or also known as Ben Franklin was my favorite store to visit as a kid. They had an old-fashion candy counter where a kid could peer at all the yummy candies behind glass, and the cashier would scoop out what you want, weighing it, and placing the contents into a small paper bag. I loved everything about that experience.
  4. Do you ever shop at a farmers market? No, I haven’t in years. I would love to visit a Farmer’s Market soon, though.
  5. Do you still have your wisdom teeth? Are you wise? 🙂 No, I don’t have my wisdom teeth. I had those cut out in the 80s. Am I wise? My first instinct is to say no, especially if you’re speaking of book-wise. I am definitely not street-wise. However, I have gained a lot of insight over the years just because with age comes wisdom. I guess I can call this life-wise and find that I am still a work-in-progress getting all the smarts needed to match my grandma.

There is one weekly meme I failed miserably at joining in on for more than a year and that’s Wednesday Hodgepodge. I hope to correct this now.

1. Share something you appreciate (or something you appreciated as you were growing up) about your mother. The one thing I appreciate about my mother is she’s a hard worker. When I started head start, I remember mom taking a job at the school as a cook. I am not sure how long she did this. Doing the math, by the time I went to first grade my baby brother was born so she let work. Again, she found herself needing to take a job in the mid-70s to help with finances because daddy had to leave the coal mines because he developed Black Lung. She worked all the time I was at home from that point until I got married in 1979. For a short time, she didn’t work. After a few years, though, she had to get another job. More than three decades she continues to work. I think the job she has now is perhaps the hardest. She has a daycare in her home. She watches her grand and great-grandkids every day. And, you know sometimes quitting time does not end at 5pm. She needs to completely retire and take care of herself. She has health issues which she simply does not tend to properly, shortening her quality of life every day she puts herself on hold.

2.  A quote most commonly ascribed to Plato reads “Necessity is the mother of invention.” When did this last play out in your own experience? I saw this play out last spring when I was so sick. DH & DS had to jump in to carry my load, as well as their own. I am super blessed to have a fine husband and son to do this for me. Some men wouldn’t be so loving or willing to step up to the plate, but they really did.

3. Share one of the earliest memories you have from childhood. I think I was about a year old. It was cold and snowy. Mom heated my bath water (we didn’t have running water in my first childhood home) and placed it in a tiny tub in the sink. I remember thinking, “Where did mommy get the water?” For some reason, I felt for certain it didn’t come from the well. I looked out the kitchen window and the snowman my auntie and her friend made me was missing its head. The conclusion formed in my tiny mind was mommy stole Frosty’s head to make my bath. To this day, I never asked her if that’s what happened or not. I am 100% sure she wouldn’t even remember this little event today.

4. When did you last ‘hit the mother lode’? What was it? The only thing that comes to mind is back in the winter, DH spoiled bought a boo-koo of rubber-stamps from my favorite online shop for me. I felt like I had hit the jackpot!

5. What is/was your favorite dish mom made? Do you make that dish for your family/friends now that you’re all grown up? Mom always made Angel Biscuits (yeast rolls) for special occasions. That may have been my favorite thing that she made. I have tried making them over the years and although I make really good regular biscuits, my yeast rolls don’t always turn out quite right.

6. Mother May I? was at one time a popular children’s game. It required no equipment or parts to play. What was your favorite childhood game where you could just turn up and play-no gear needed? I remember Mother May I, as a kid and always liked playing it. Simon Says was another good game that required no play gear.

7. Which TV mom (past or present) is your favorite, and why? Lucy from the I love Lucy show. The reason Lucy was my favorite is she wasn’t perfect, but crazy with all of her hair-brained ideas making life very interesting. Can you imagine what it would be like to live under her roof?

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  Jack Bauer is back! I feel safer already. 🙂 Need I say more?

That is such a precious memory and Wow! that you remember that. You must have been a smart little thing, though, to equate Frosty’s head with your bath.

I was just at a farmers’ market in Lancaster Co. this past Sunday. All the yummy things….crafts….antiques….it was heaven. 🙂

Angel biscuits make me think of my precious and much missed grandma. She never wrote down the recipe, kinda eyeballed it. I do not have her knack for such a thing. Glad you joined in this week!
