The flutist #FlashbackFriday

Cathy, age 2

Good-morning, kittens & dawgs! Yesterday’s icy mix ushered into Knoxville yesterday morning proving Old Man winter is still in charge. TGIF! The forecast looks promising with spring-like weather for tomorrow. Yippee!!

I played flute from grades 5-9 at Bradshaw Jr. High School home of the Hornets! There were other girls who played the flute better than me. I played more mechanically than from the soul. Perhaps, it had to do with the lack of confidence in myself. What ever the reason, I enjoyed being musical.

Looking back on those days, I have two regrets. The first, I chose not to play in high school and second, I sold my flute to a friend of a friend just before I got married.

Many years later, I tried to correct one of those regrets. I wanted to buy my old flute back, but the gal didn’t want to part with it and I don’t blame her. At that time, my sister was trying to sell her flute, so I bought hers.

I forgot how to read music, which means I don’t know what notes I am playing when I do play. Some tunes I instinctively play pieces of songs by heart, but that’s as far as I go. I keep thinking one day I’ll find how-to videos on learning to play the flute, but haven’t attempted to do it. Maybe, it’s time I vest time into this delver and teach this gal how to make Tootsie toot!

Do you have any flashbacks you’d like to share? We’d love to see what’s stirring around in your mind ~ an old photo, family recipe, a forgotten song, or anything that brings back a bit of past fondness for you.

What past regrets do you wish you could change?
Today, I celebrate the small things in my life.

  • I celebrate having a fabulously wonderful husband who loves and appreciates me. Click here to see what he did earlier in the week that made me smile.
  • I celebrate that the latest round of wintry mix wasn’t too bad after all!
  • I celebrate the opportunity to use my elliptical every day this week putting in more than 8 hours and 16 miles.

What are you celebrating?

We all can use some new friends and we can begin by joining Friendship Friday blog hop. Thanks for visiting. If you find yourself having trouble keeping warm hop over tomorrow for a little boogie session with Saturday Songsuasion!

  1. I’m a flutist, and taught flute for years. I often heard from students’ parents that their biggest regret was not continuing their music when they were younger, and they were enjoying experiencing it vicariously through their child. I have the same regret with piano!

Loved your photo. What good memories for you!

  2. Yay for hubbies getting some snow days! Next time I’m at my mom’s I should really pull out her old albums and get those old photos in digital format…we did that years ago with some of my grandparents old pics. Preservation is key! Have a great weekend!

  3. It was SO sweet that your hubby downloaded a romantic song as a surprise for you – that’s definitely something to celebrate! Yay for exercising and for winter losing its grip on your area. I’ve always been grateful that the public school system where I grew up put every child in Orchestra, Band, or Chorus. Learning to play and read music is a privilege. I’m sorry when I hear that most schools don’t do that anymore… Love the pic of you as a flautist!

  4. I’m having similar issues with old photos. One in a frame, I ran warm water on the outside, careful to not wet the backside of the photo. It loosened up and came away from the glass. But another one didn’t work. Nice one of you and the flute!

    1. I’d be one nervous Cathy, if I ran water over the backs of old pictures and I’m pretty sure Mom would freak out a bit, too. lol

      1. Run the warm water over the glass only, keep it from the back side… the photo. Oops, sorry about that explanation.
