It’s totally official. Daughter #2 (Nicole) is now engaged. Last night, she called us with her joyous news. Some people may say, “You’re not losing a daughter, you’re gaining a son.” The real question is will I lose my sanity? Take a look at her ring. It’s gorgeous!
DD2’s news couldn’t have been more perfectly timed for today’s Alphabe-Thursday homework assignment post.
Wedding Bells
Superstitions make up many wedding traditions. Who knew, right? I know I sure didn’t. Church bells signaled the community that a funeral or wedding was taking place at the church. Customary use for bells on one’s wedding is to announce the joyous occasion to the community but its birth actually stems from superstition. It’s believed the towing of the bells brought good luck and fortune to the newlyweds and wart away evil spirits which wish to ruin the couple’s happiness.
Wedding Music
Music sets the mood in all of us no matter what the occasion, but especially at weddings. This should suit the couple’s personality and style. We had a mixture of traditional and contemporary at ours. During the prelude our good friend, Tony Vance, performed two of our favorite songs by the 70s music group, Bread. My daddy walked me down the aisle classical tune of Here Comes the Bride played by our church’s pianist, and then as Robin and I left the church to the Wedding March.

Wedding Cake
A favorite part of any wedding is always the reception which follows. The wedding cake is the focus of this event. This custom dates back as far as the Roman Empire with some interesting variants in the past for this tradition. From the Victorian era, the white cake emerged signifying purity. The cake cutting ceremony is special because it symbolizes the couple’s first act as husband and wife, one that can be displayed in tenderness or in silliness. In retrospect, I wish we had been a little silly, instead of so serious.
Wedding Galore
You have heard this phrase, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a silver sixpence inside your shoe.” This is a custom most weddings continue to honor. In fact, I did 32 years ago. However, I can’t recall the silver sixpence inside my shoe being incorporated into my customs, though.
What does this all mean? Something old… the guests attending the ceremony who are already married. Ouch, right? Something new… the newlyweds and the start of their new life. Something borrowed… the bride must give back her mother’s wedding dress or her veil. Something blue… the bride’s virginity and purity. Something silver… a silver coin the bride can tuck inside her shoe to represent future wealth and prosperity.
Many essential components make up a wedding, such as the wedding dress, flowers, bridal party, rings, and more. The planning can be exciting and frustrating. Hindsight is like 20-20 vision. Simplicity is the key to maintaining one’s mental well-being and financial stability. I hope my daughter runs with this bit of advice.
