Action, Action we need Action! Act-ion, ACTION! My cheer leading days are over or at least the physical aspect of cheer leading is, but I’ll be a cheerleader at heart forever. My bubbly disposition gives me an automatic sense of wanting to propel others toward great things, especially in my children. Sometimes, correction often times, I find I need my spirit revved to do tasks.
For years, I’ve kept my course of action laid out on a large dry-erase whiteboard. We bought specifically for our homeschooling needs. It easily transformed into my command center of To-dos. There was no escaping my duties, if they are constantly staring me in the face every time I pass the whiteboard and it’s often passed throughout the day, too.
Today’s action is to write an ‘A’ post for Miss Jenny. An ‘A’ post, I haven’t given much significance to until this morning. There’s nothing like waiting until the last moment, eh?
We’ve all used the phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” to promote good health. The origin of this saying comes from Wales in 1866. Why do you suppose it was an ‘apple’ a day, instead of any number of other fruits a day keeps the doctor away?
Let’s think about the beneficial properties of this delicious natural snack food:
- An excellent source of soluble fiber. Pectin can help to lower blood pressure and glucose levels, as well as your LDL ‘bad cholesterol’. An important role Pectin plays in my life is it maintains a healthier digestive system.
- Supports strong bones and a healthy brain. The nutrient boron is plentiful in apples. Who knew, right?
- Possibly reduces the risk of certain cancers such as lungs, colon, prostate, and breast.
- Quercetin is a flavonoid linked to neutralizing the damage of free radicals which are notorious in effecting age-related health issues like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
- Rich variety of photonutrients like vitamins A and E and beta carotene may reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and asthma. Speaking of asthma, research has been found that people who eat 5 apples a week have lower respiratory problems.
- An immune system booster! Apples contain vitamin C, a nutrient which speeds healing, prevents bruising, and promotes healthier gums and teeth. Did you know the juice of apples have properties that can kill 80% of the bacteria found in your mouth?
- Additionally, apples are low in calories and are good tasting. A total win-win food choice for picking this for fruit for a daily snack.
Maybe, you already knew many of these tidbits about apples, but if you’re like me, then you find it serves as a nice reminder to do the right things for my health. Make apples a part of your day! I think I’ll share an apple with my teacher, come on follow me over to….

Crunch-crunch…I’m strolling over to Miss Amanda’s blog…mmm, this yellow delicious apple is so good…Oh, I’m sorry, I was saying I’m going to join in on some more Thursday fun with ….
I hope you’ll decide to play along, too!
My questions today are:
- What’s your favorite thing to do with apples? Eat out of the hand or make a tasty recipe? If your answer is make something, then tell us what it is! Over all, I prefer eating apples raw especially if they are home-grown. None of the grocery store apples which are too hard and flavorless. My in-laws have several apples trees that produce some nice fruit. I missed out getting some this season. Oh pooh!
- Have you recently had an apple, if so what kind or if you don’t know because it was in a dish what was it called? I had apples recently, in fact yesterday I ate one of the yellow delicious apples we bought at our Super Wal-mart. Normally, as I said I do not like buying apples from the store, but I wanted some so we could dip into my home-made caramels I made and I was pleasantly surprised to find these to be some of the best tasting store-bought apples I’ve gotten in a long time.
