Last Wednesday, I posted this…. 1940 Contraption & Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy – Wayback Wednesdays. Today, I thought I’d put your suspense of “I’ve gotta know” to rest on what the 1940 contraption was I put up. It’s a military can opener. My DH had one from his boyhood, which he used when he would go camping. It’s a great little device and it works great for opening up canned foods.
Angela from Mommy Time Out and I would like to welcome you to Wayback Wednesdays!
Which brings me to, what can I pull from my memories today?
Today is the first official day of summer. To revel in the birth of a new season, I’ll pay a wee bit of tribute to it with spotlighting this 1940s contraption. Do you know what this is?
For some reason whenever I think of the long lost endless days of summer melting into steaming, fire-fly, insect humming nights this piece of nostaglia plays an important part in my past. It’s not as if I used this thing much. In fact, it was rare. But, it held a bit of magic for many of us.
The above photo isn’t typically the way you see this thing. I dare say, if I saw it pictured like this then I may not make the connection. Here’s another hint….
I bet you know what it is now. Today, this isn’t something you see too much. However, if you grew up during the times between the 40s and 70s then you would have been exposed to its use.
Still in the dark? Then, take a look at this vintage poster ad.
Have you been to a drive-in movie before? It’s definitely an interesting experience. I had the good fortune of doing this a time or two growing up. The first movie I saw on these huge open field screens was The Exorcist with Linda Blair. Oh holy cow! Was that ever the scariest film for a young teenage girl to see outside…in the dark…in a huge open field…inside a car…with a boy…and a backseat full of chaperons kids. I had nightmares for weeks! No not over the date, but the movie. I still get the hebbie gebbies looking at pictures or movie clips from The Exorcist.
This is the theme music which haunted me forever. Don’t worry this music video doesn’t have any scences from the film.

I knew immediately what they were! my hometown kept an old drive in theatre that used these into the 80’s early 90’s. I can remember piling into cars with my high school friends and going to the double features. I think I saw one of the Star Wars movies there. great memories.
I can’t play the video — even the theme song will give me scary bed thoughts. I like happy bed thoughts 😉
