The Merriman-Webster Dictionary defines inspiration as the action or power of moving the intellect or emotions. Becoming inspired isn’t necessarily a weakness for me, as much as pulling my collective thoughts into a beautiful floral arrangement of words. My writing style is like a story playing in my head which flows from my mind onto paper like a jigsaw puzzle until the pieces fit together properly.
Becky, a fellow author, has inspired and challenged me to think differently with a few writing techniques to help mold my writing style.
Writing tip #1 Main character should be faced with a problem that he/she must resolve. Wha-lah! In fact, I already started working this point in my re-writes. I just didn’t know that it was sluggish until she spoke life into this tip. Who would’ve known, right?
Writing tip #2 Publishers are looking for kiddie lit which shows the love of family. I feel the love as I write. Does that count? My intent is to show the love of family. However, the $10,000 question is, is it reflective to the reader? Hmm, time to go back for a second look.
Writing well is just as much about reading. Reading lots and lots and lots of kid-lit on the market This can improve your writing style. I need to pull out our generous stash of children’s story books buried in the closet for a course in Kid Lit 101. Do you have any easy readers titles to recommend?
This year, I’m looking forward to sculpting a better me out of the old me as I craft my writing skills. Technology has bridged a gap for me to communicate with fellow authors. A valuable asset needed to build my success as a serious writer.
Now that the lid is off the can of inspiration the old mind-greased, it’s time to get to work!
