Name That Band? Part 1

Awww Mondays hosted by Sandee from Comedy Plus.

Welcome to Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me on Sunday!  This theme this week is freedom of choice which means you get to pick whatever songs you want.

Today, we’re going to play a little game called Name that band!  I’m going to give you  a name of popular, successful group who started off with a horrible name.  My first band is comprised of two young men who went by Tom and Jerry.

No, not this Tom & Jerry

They started their musical journey as teenagers and scored a minor hit in the mid to late 50s but failing to produce another hit which caused them to focus on college instead of their career.  They got back together in 1964 dropping their original moniker and using their real names.  I’ll give you hint, listen to Hey Schoolgirl.

Who are Tom and Jerry now?  If you said Simon and Garfunkel then you’re right.  The boys risked alienation by using their Jewish names.  Unfortunately, in those early years minorities weren’t treated too kindly.  It doesn’t matter what color your skin is, we’re all the same in God’s eyes.  I’m happy the boys were successful in their quest to write and record music that has entertained us through the years and across different ethnic backgrounds.

Now let your mind transform to the days of the 60s and 70s with a few of Simn & Garfunkel’s greatest hits!

Simon & Garfunkel playlist: 1. I Am A Rock  2. Kathy’s Song  3. America  4.  Bridge Over Troubled Water  5. Mrs. Robinson   6. The Sound of Silence  7. The Boxer  8. A Hazy Shade of Winter  9. Cecilia  10. Homeward Bound

This month’s honorary co-hostess is little ole ME

❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵

This is a mewsic linky party. Every other week we have a suggested mewsic theme (see side menu) to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our mewsic enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

Mine band name is…GREEN EGGS & SPAM. That can almost be the name of a children’s story book, too. lol

Our good friend Marie isn’t feeling too well due to her chronic back issues.  I’m unsure if she’ll be ready to boogie with us this week so if you don’t see her on the dance floor then kindly say a little prayer for her.  She has a MRI scheduled this week.  I hope it can tell the doctor what he needs to do to fix our girl up good as new.

Thanks for making me a part of your day.  I hope you enjoyed the new series launch and song picks today.  Next up, is Top Ten Tuesdays.  Stay safe, be well, and have a boogietastic week, my friend!  X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. Hi! Not sure how I got here, but I’m sure glad I did. This was truly a treat! Unfamiliar with the first song or the original Tom & Jerry name, I stared at the picture knowing I should know them as their teasingly familiar voices coaxed my auditory senses into staying around to find out. This was better than finding money in last year’s coat pocket – thank you!

    1. Diedre,

You and I travel in some of the same circle of bloggy friends. I betcha saw my comment on one our mutual friends and popped over which I’m glad that you did, too. I noticed on your September 1st post my good buds, Debbie (DogDenLady) and Stephen T. McCartney. I think I’ve seen you at John’s The Sound of One Hand Typing. So, I’m sure you found me this way. Whatever the reason that brought you here, I’m happy for it and I hope you’ll bookmark my site to come back again.

  2. We didn’t know that, CK, but we know Simon and Garfunkel. They’re absolutely fabulous♪♫♪ I don’t have a toothbrush, but Granny has, so hers is pink and I ate pork, so pink pork is my new name…almost like a real porkling…MOL…That’s a cute quote and an awwdorable kitty. Pawkisses for a Happy Monday and some Healing ones for Mary🐾😽💞

    1. Binky,

You and Sandee almost came up with the same band name. Her’s is Pink Pork Loin. Thanks for sending your healing wishes for Marie, my furriend and thanks for joining me on the dance floor.

  3. Love that kitty. That’s me this morning. A huge Awww.

I didn’t know this. I didn’t know they started out with different names or why.

My band name is purple pork loin. Yikes.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

When I initially did this post, I was thinking of people referring back to their morning breakfast and didn’t give into account time difference but it’s been interesting to read the various band names given. 😀

  4. One of my all time favorite duos and movies. Simon and Garfunkel were a quiet place in the storm of rock and laid the foundation for folk rock. Their music was thoughtful and thought provoking. Their harmonies were perfect. Thanks for sharing a blast from my past.

    1. S&G had perfect harmonies for sure. Their voices were simply golden, so easy on the ears and relaxing to soak up while playing in the background. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!

  5. My grade school days! S&G were really popular among the girls, not so popular among the boys. I’m still not all that fond of them, but I don’t change the station like I used to, Good set anyway…

    1. John,

Yeah, I guess I see how S&G wasn’t really big with boys as girls. I’m glad you don’t change the station when they come on. Maybe, you’re warming up to them. 🙂

  6. We grew up with next door neighbors who moved here from another country, and they named their two boys Tom and Jerry. It was just two names they liked.

Loved the music, and the funnies made me smile.

  7. Hey there Cathy! Who knew? Well, I certainly didn’t. I’m definitely familiar with Simon and Garfunkel, but had never heard of Tom & Jerry (The band – definitely heard about the cartoon!) That was a fun escape for the day. My band name is Purple Chicken & Rice. Have a great week!

  8. I did know the duo Tom and Jerry evolved into (since I am a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan). Sadly, hiding your real name was (and still is, in some quarters) almost expected in show business. Despite being a fan of S&G, I had never heard a Tom and Jerry song. Wow, I would have thought they were the Everly Brothers. They were good even at 16 years old. So good hearing some of these songs, especially I am a Rock (I had the single and it was my anthem of Teenaged Angst), Hazy Shade of Winter (I used to know all the words, aargh), America (there are a LOT of cars on the New Jersey Turnpike), The Boxer (had the album). This is only missing For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her (B side of Hazy Shade of Winter) and Scarborough Fair/Canticle (which I probably wore out on my record player). Anyway, you made my Sunday afternoon, thank you!

    1. Alana,

I don’t get that hiding one’s name business. It was only in recent years that I learned many of the talented acts I’ve come to know and enjoy over the years belong to Jewish folks. And, it’s very interesting in my discoveries that some of the most well-known Christmas songs were also written by Jewish songwriters. I don’t care beans about someone’s religion or skin color. We’re all God’s children and it’s time that we treat each other equally. Heck, you don’t even have to be religious to abide by the golden rule to treat others the way you want to be treated. I mean, who wants bad things to happen to themselves? No one. Oh well, I can rant on about such injustice behavior but I’ll stop for now. I’m happy you enjoyed my music set. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, my dear!

  9. Hi Cathy, thanks for sharing the history about Simon & Garfunkel. I had no idea they used to be called Tom and Jerry. Love the playlist! Their music is timeless and beautiful. ♥ My band name would be Blue Banana. Cute, huh? 😆 Funny dog meme – I wish I had thought of that when we got Zoey. Have a great week!

    1. Debbie,

I love that dog’s name. I hope if we ever own any pets, we can get really creative with the name. We often laugh about DH’s uncle who picks the most unimaginative even predictable names for his dogs. He does have a sense of humor so perhaps this is one of his ways of making us laugh and it works. 🙂

  10. Interesting. I did not know that about Simon and Garfunkle. My band name would be Cinnamon Sticks. Not bad. 🙂 XO

  11. Hi, Cathy!

Happy 4M Monday on Sunday, dear friend! I hope you and DH are having a nice weekend. Right off the bat, I’d like to smooch that sleepy kitty. Our black cat jumped in bed with us last night and wanted me to scratch and pet him. I was too sleepy to oblige, so Mrs. Shady gave him lovins for a while.

I applaud you for giving us a mewsical history lesson and tracing the career of Simon & Garfunkel back to the beginning when they called themselves Tom & Jerry. I am familiar with their early single “Hey Schoolgirl” because I ran a post similar to yours many years ago on my old blog. In those days the duo sounded like and were obviously under the influence of The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.

Yessum, it’s a good thing the boys didn’t get discouraged and quit the music business when they didn’t catch on as Tom & Jerry. The world would have missed a wealth of great material like the S&G song classics you posted. Believe it or not, “I Am a Rock” was a hit in the dance hall of The Shady Dell. Ranked #113 on my list of the 200 Greatest Hits of the Dell, it stands as one of the few non-dance hits on the Dell jukebox, a song that was meant to get you thinking rather than dancing. Another S&G song you posted, “Homeward Bound,” was also a Dell biggie and is ranked at #119. “Mrs. Robinson” and “The Sound Of Silence” immediately shift my thoughts to one of my favorite films, The Graduate, a movie I studied at college in a mass media course. I’ll never forget the day (and evening) when I binge watched The Graduate five times in a row in a State College theater, taking copious notes which I later used to write an essay about the film that had been assigned to the class by the professor. “The Boxer” has always been a favorite of mine, and “Hazy Shade Of Winter” went on to become even more famous when covered by the wildly popular girl band The Bangles.

My band name is Purple Pretzel. (LOL) I loved that dog meme. They should have named him “25 Miles” while they were at it, since that’s the name of a hit song. You offered great sounds aplenty in this S&G block. Prayers for Marie, and I’ll see you back here for TTT.

Program note: Please mark your calendar and join me if you can this Wednesday when I publish my special David Lynch post, the one you and I have been discussing. I mention it in case you are no longer receiving emails about my new posts. Have a great week, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

Thanks for joining me on the dance floor. I figured you would be acquainted with S&G’s early work. I’m not sure how I came across “Hey Schoolgirl” but it could’ve very well been on SPMM…oh wait now I remember, it was an online article I read about musicians beginnings. Like you, I’m glad S&G didn’t throw in the towel when things seemed to fall apart early on. They are now legends in the music industry and there won’t ever be duet team like these fellas. Your band name is really cool. I don’t know the hit song, “25 Miles” that would’ve been neat but it’s not realistic to tell me you’ve walked 25 miles as that is probably why they went with 5 miles. lol
