My ‘Mama’ is better than yours BoTB Showdown

Welcome to 2021 BoTB round 10!   In last week’s song challenge I found inspiration with Mary’s song prompts.  One of the songs I used was a cover “Mama” sung by Connie Frances.  I thought it would be cool to use all female cover artists of the song originally sung by a man but when I got to looking there wasn’t much to go with so I decided to a showdown of three different artists singing their own ‘Mama’ song titles in today’s My ‘Mama’ is better than yours BoTB showdown!

First artist, BJ Thomas.

Second artist is, Dalida.

Third artist is, Roy Orbison.

Who gets your vote, BJ Thomas, Dadida, or Roy Orbison?

I invite you to visit BoTBers with showdowns going on today.

Polls close May 21st at noon (EST)

Next week, same time slot I’ll be back to announce the winner in this round, so be sure to mark your calendar to see if your favorite artist wins in this showdown.

Do you like music? Of course you do that’s why you’re here today, right?  This Monday there is no theme, so it’s ‘your choice’ week to share with the 4M crew whatever music is moving you.  You’re invited to the best party in Blogosphere with Monday’s Music Moves Me and I want to boogie with you on the dance floor!  X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. I’ve always enjoyed Roy Orbison but B.J. Thomas (as well as the video) really tugged my heartstrings. It’s B.J. for me, please 😉

  2. Just got back last night from a weekend in San Diego which was a nice respite from being online.

Now back to the whatever world.

“Mama” songs are a bit treacly to me though I did love my mother and miss her. Never called her “mama” though.

Of these three songs the most palpable to my senses is the song by BJ Thomas. It reminded me of his version of “I’m So Lonesome I could Cry” with the organ in the background and the waltz tempo. Kind of retro, but still nice to listen to.

  3. These are great examples. Now I have to tell you I love the Dalida. The music, the expression is wonderful. But I am gong to go with BJ. Thomas.

  4. CAThy! It’s That You?!

This was an EZ bote for me…
    B.J. THOMAS.

He was actually singing about his Mama, while the others were putting on a show.

Obviously, either Thomas or Orbison (who is extremely high on my ‘Most Overrated’ list) will win this BOTB contest.

But I think you missed a “Momma” who would kick butt against whichever “Mama” wins this particular Battle.

Although I’m no longer a BOTB participant, I’m going to ask you (whenever it happens to be convenient for you) to take the WINNER of this particular Battle and pit them against the song “MOMMA” by Bob Seger — the version from his ‘BEAUTIFUL LOSER’ album which, in my opinion, was easily his best album EVER, even though it was released before he became a major star.

Seger’s ‘MOMMA’ has, on several occasions, reduced my 5’6″ brother, Nappy (short for Napoleon), [nearly?] to tears. And Nappy is the TOUGHEST guy I’ve ever known — he could literally knock 6’6″ guys into Tomorrow within 10 or 15 seconds.

If Bob Seger’s ‘MOMMA’ can make Nappy cry, then Bob Seger’s ‘MOMMA’ could definitely beat up B.J. Thomas’s or Roy Orbison’s ‘Mama’.

(Nappy was the middle child, and he definitely had the classic “middle child” syndrome. He was a wild, Wild, WILD child!!! And now we “KNOW WHY SHE [Momma] HATED THAT PHONE”.)

If Seger’s ‘MOMMA’ doesn’t beat the living daylights outta the winning ‘Mama’ from THIS BOTB of yours, then I will send $20.00 to the charity of YOUR CHOICE!

    Yes, that’s a friendly challenge.

    1. Stephen,

I may take your suggestion to use the winner and put him against Bob Seger but if I do it may be after summer. Starting next month, I have plans to roll into my summer blogging schedule and I’m going to only do one showdown per month which will be on the 1st. Your story of your brother being brought to tears with Bob Seger’s “Momma” made me smile. Tough guys have a soft spot for their moms. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by to vote for BJ THOMAS, my friend. Have a good day!

  5. All 3 are so good but it is almost a tie for me between Roy Orbison and Dadida. I will give my vote to Roy who just creates such a great story not only with the lyrics but the way he sings it.

    1. Birgit,

ROY ORBISON has a story telling voice. He connects the lyrics with his emotions to reel in his listeners. Thanks for voting, my friend!

  6. I liked them all, but it was BJ Thomas that sealed the deal for me. I liked the upbeat sound. Good battle!

  7. I have to chose between Dalida and Roy Orbison, CK, but in the end I chosed Roy. His voice does it, but the mewsic of Dalida I like more. Maybe we have to mix them 😸Pawkisses for a wonderful weekend🐾😽💞

    1. Binky,

I’m not surprised you went with ROY ORBISON between the two. I like Dalida, too. I do want to listen to more of her music. Thanks for stopping by to play along, furriend!

  8. My vote goes to B.J. Thomas. Loved the sound and loved all the pictures of mom.

Have a fabulous weekend, Cathy. Big hug. ♥

  9. Hi, Cathy!

I hope your weekend is off to a great start, dear friend!

Voting in this battle of “Mama” songs was easy for me. In 1960, Connie Francis scored a top 10 hit with her version of the Italian song “Mama.” I’m not much of a fan of weepy songs and didn’t buy Connie’s record. In your contest, B.J.’s “Mama” song struck me as cloying and overly sentimental. I found more to like in Dalida’s symphonic recording and appreciated her soaring, impassioned vocal. However the first two entries cannot compare to the one by the late great Roy Orbison. In 1962 Roy’s “Mama” song was released as the B side of his top 30 charting hit “The Crowd.” Roy’s song does not pay homage to his mama. Instead the theme is typical of many of the songs for which Roy is famous – a sad song about the pain he is experiencing after having his heart broken by a woman he loved. Roy phones his “Mama” to share his misery and seek her emotional support. It is vintage velvet voiced Roy Orbison magic and Roy wins my vote by a landslide.

Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

A boy eventually turns to his mama for help especially when his heart has been broken. Thanks for voting in my mid-month BoTB and being the firs to cast your vote for ROY ORBISON, my friend. Have a good week!
