Marvin the Martian

Hello loyal CAAC fans and A2Zers!  I can’t believe we’re mid-way through the April challenge.  A few of you voiced hopes of seeing Marvin the Martian in this series.  I knew right off which characters I wanted to include and Marvin definitely made the first cut.  In fact the very first time I drew Marvin <—link to illustration] was for Thursday Art Date with Rain.

Marvin with his loyal companion, K-9 pencil sketch

Although not named at the start, Marvin appeared on the Looney Tunes scene in 1948 as Bugs Bunny’s antagonist in Haredevil Hare.

Later on, in The Hasty Hare (1952) Marvin was referred to as the Commander of Flying Saucer X-2.  It wasn’t until 1979 after the character began attracting merchandising interest Marvin was named and appeared in The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie (trailer).  Bugs did refer to Marvin as a “bowling ball wearing a spittoon”once.  I suspected it’s because his head resembles an ant.

Marvin has tried to destroy the Earth on a number of occasions with his Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator for no other reason than the Earth obstructs his view of Venus.  He has an odd sound to his voice and often speaks technobabble.  Marvin is known for some of his trademark quotes, “Where’s the kaboom:  There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom!”,  “Isn’t that lovely?”, and my favorite, “This makes me very angry, very angry indeed.”

While at Wiki I glanced over Marvin’s connection with popular culture to learn that his likeness appears in a miniature on the Mars Spirit Rover, as well as on the mission launch patch.  I had to laugh when I saw that he appears in the FBI lineup with other TV aliens in an episode or two of The Simpsons.  That’s just a few things from the list

  1. I am so willing to pay for that sketch. It is so wonderful. Marvin is my main man and always has been. I used to have a Marvin stuffed doll that when my daughter was born 25 years ago, she kind of took it over. I still have a figure of Marvin on my bookshelf. So very nice.

  2. I knew I’d missed a few days, but I had to check back and see if you did Marvin for M – and you did! Aw, he didn’t mean anything by trying to destroy the earth. He just likes what he likes LOL. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Last night I was telling my husband about your Looney Tune posts and we got to laughing over the characters we could remember, and he brought up Marvin the Martian. So funny.

  4. I think Marvin may be one of my favorite Looney Tune character (aside from Bugs Bunny) although I don’t think I saw much of him. So maybe him wanting to destroy earth is a bit much but I him amusing. Good drawing.

    Have a lovely day.

  5. I love Marvin! He is one of my favourites, especially when he walks. I love his K9 and those weird martian birds with daisies on the top of their heads. I love your drawing which is so cute and I can’t wait to see it coloured.

  6. Another wonderful cartoon. I loved Marvin and K9. Hubby and I enjoyed the cartoon. Fond memories. Your sketches are awesome too.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

  7. Hey hey whaddaya say… Marvin and his trusty rusty K-9. They weren’t my fav, but I sure do remember them. If you hop on over to my page I share some insights about Marriage . I think I need to go see what this mid month BoTB is.

    Cheers,

  8. Hi, Cathy!

    Happy M-day, dear friend!

I don’t remember Marvin the Martian. If the character wasn’t actually given a name and began to attract merchandising interest until 1979, then that would explain my ignorance, because I was almost 30 years old by then. Coincidentally, as I’m sure you know, there was a Martian character with the similar sounding name of Martin who starred in the hit mid 60s TV sitcom My Favorite Martian.

In the cartoon clip, I had to laugh at Bugs, the “Haredevil Hare,” crying that he can’t be launched into space because he has a wife and kids – MILLIONS of kids. 🙂 I also laughed because the escape hatch on the rocket needed to have a big “Escape Hatch” sign on it. Clearly Bugs had no training whatsoever before his moon mission started.

Your sketch of Marvin the Martian and his faithful pet and sidekick K-9, the green cartoon Martian dog, is nicely detailed and begs for colorization. Thanks for the cartoon history lesson on the origin and evolution of Marvin the Martian. Have a splendid day, dear friend Cathy, and I’ll see you tamale on N-day!

  9. I’m so happy – Marvin is definitely one of my favourite characters and I had my fingers crossed that he would appear. I love that he’s on the Mars rover and the launch pad, that has made my day. The little Martian lives on.
    Great post as always.
