Looking Down

I had hoped kinda while on vacation I would find time to doodle.   I did do a little but not in preparation for the first prompt for November.  Instead, I sketched a Halloween design for LA (Little Angelina) to paint on a plain t-shirt. I shared a picture of her wearing it on Tuesday.

Today’s theme is Looking Down.  Right now nothing new is on my sketch pad, so let me browse through my illustrations to see if I have anything that will work.

Last January for Rain’s “Glow” prompt I used Procreate to sketch an expecting mother which also inspired me to contribute a poem for Eugi’s Causerie prompt, “Glimmer”. She’s definitely looking down at her growing tummy in expectations of her new bundle’s arrival. Click to enlarge.
I can’t recall why I sketched the angel sitting on the cloud looking down but it was the perfect illustration to accompany a poem I wrote in the passing of two of my uncles’ wives who died within a month of the other. I used this design again recently for family who had a loved one to cross over. Click to enlarge.
As a parent, I often looked down on my sleeping children at night making sure they were okay like this big eyed girl I sketched. Click to enlarge.

Perhaps next week I will have a new piece of art to share.  I’m trying to stay above water while I get back blogging legs under me properly.

This week’s Thankful Thursday list I include these blessings…

  • I’m thankful that my dental appointment went well. I had two old porcelain covered metal crowns removed so they can be replaced and I had the dentist to remove any amalgam fillings underneath. I have metal sensitivity so other than the irritation I’m frequently plagued with what else is this doing to my body?
  • I’m thankful for having little to no pain associated with my dental work, even getting numbed up wasn’t bad. I didn’t sense the usual prick and burn from the shots.
  • I’m thankful to be back to blogging again. The time away was needed but I’m happy to resume my normal routine again.
  • I’m thankful the headache I had yesterday has passed. Those things make me a fuzzy brained mess!
  • I’m thankful for a short week as DH is off tomorrow. Bouncing back to normal life after a lazy two break takes a bit of adjustment. 🙂

Last month, I began again with Kat’s writing prompts.  Writing was my first creative passion. I hope to revive this dormant side of me before it becomes a lost art altogether. This week I’m inspired to use Kat’s prompt # 6 to Write about a time you felt like you were in the Twilight Zone.

There are two times in my life which I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone but I’ll just tell you about one of those times today.  This story takes place Christmas 1980 or ’81. That’s been too many years ago for me to remember now but the experience is still fresh in my mind.  My folks live in the south-western part of Virginia just outside of Bluefield, West Virginia if you’re familiar with the area.  DH’s family lived on top of Bradshaw Mountain in southern West Virginia.  My memory is fuzzy but we either arrived from Knoxville at Mom and Dad I believe on the 23rd.  My mom asked if we could take my baby sister to my childhood next door neighbors’ daughter. She was like a second mother to her. We were going that way to see DH’s family so it wasn’t any trouble for us to do it.  Like clock work early on Christmas Eve it began to snow.  It didn’t worry us growing up in that part of the country, we were accustomed to a white Christmas.  It came down pretty steadily.  After dinner and presents, we figured it was time to head to the Kennedys.  The snow falling was the heavy wet kind which made sticking to everything possible.  We had my folks to call DH’s to let them know we were on our way but we’d be a little late since we needed to drop off my sister at the Pucketts who lived in my childhood home.  I did a screen capture of two possible routes we could’ve traveled. We took the more northern gray route going through Bluefield since it put us closer to our first stop without going out of our way or so we thought.

The snow began coming down heavier sometime after we left Bluefield. The wind was drive the white stuff in every direction making visibility difficult.  The roads were getting slippery. At one point we got to a hill where we saw a line of tail lights. It was mostly cars without chains unable to make it up.  At that point, my little sister said, I want to go home. I just looked at her and said, we’re not going back. Poor thing didn’t realize how far we’d come and how much trouble it would’ve been to retrieve.  Distance-wise we were too far away but the elements kept us from making the trip in a timely fashion.  Anywho, DH knew we’d have a problem since we didn’t have a good opportunity to progg the gas to the petal, so he turned the car around and went up the hill backwards which he managed beautifully.  All I can say is thank God no traffic was coming down that hill because it felt like he was flying. That was probably my nerves but it was scary – blinding snow and slick conditions. It makes me think of the scene in The Shinning where Jack Nicholson is chasing his son through through the garden labyrinth – bitterly cold snow blowing all around.  I think it was after that we pulled off for DH to put the chains on the front wheels.   I was on pins and needles the whole time. What should’ve taken less than 2-hours to drive ended up being more like a 5 or 6 hour trip.  Pamela was happy to get to Donna’s and DH’s family was  relieved to see us. I know my parents had to be happy to hear everything was okay, too.  That was a Twilight Zone Christmas Eve experience for sure!

Hopefully, next week I’ll have things under control with a new piece of artwork to share.  Thanks for stopping in with your morning coffee for a peek at my latest illustration and …oh yeah, thanks for not spilling it on my artwork. 😉 I’m heading over to Rain’s Garden to browse through the gallery of artistry and you’re welcome to follow along!

This is DH’s off-Friday, so I will be MIA in Blogosphere until Monday. I’m going to leave you with a new-to-me song “Looking Down” by Audiovent which works well for TADwR prompt. Until next time, y’all stay safe, be well, and have a doodletastic day!  X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. Loved the poems. Last summer, I lost my heart-and-soul doggie, my best buddy, and a brother in law in about 6 weeks, so that definitely hit home. Audiovent was cool, too!

  2. Love the poem. Beautiful and so very true.

I love all your thankful things too. Life is good if we just focus on all the good things around us.

You know I love your sketches.

Have a fabulous day, my friend. Love and hugs. ♥

  3. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Thankful Thursday Art Date with Rain, dear friend!

It’s heartwarming to see the shirt you designed for sweet Little Angelina. She’s a cutie! I love your color drawing of the expecting mother looking down at her belly and imagining the bundle of joy that will soon arrive. Your Weep For Me poem brings tears to my eyes, Cathy, and goes perfectly with the inspiring image of a guardian angel looking down from above upon a troubled world and waiting to carry us all to a better place. Your sketch of a caring mother gazing at her sleeping child is another wonderful reminder of how good it feels to give love and receive it in return – love in all its forms.

It’s great to know that you got thru your dental procedure w/o any problems and that your pain was held to a minimum, and also that your pesky headache has subsided. As soon as I started reading your story about Christmas 80/81, I began to feel uneasy, predicting what was to come. On our recent trip to Western North Carolina there were times when we were driving for long periods through the high elevations w/o any GPS signal, believing we were lost, and starting to run low on gas. As I told you, we made our way over into Tennessee on one such day trip and wound up south of where you live. Mrs. Shady had an experience similar to yours many years ago when she was 9 months pregnant with her second child. They were driving through a blizzard in PA and came upon a chain reaction crash on a slippery highway bridge. The bridge was completely blocked with dented cars (a car-tangled spanner). She and her small child and unborn baby were stranded many hours before tow trucks arrived to clear the way for them to continue their journey.

The California band Audiovent has the kind of wild, edgy, emotive alternative rock sound I love. Thanks for posting their song/video “Looking Down” as part of your theme post.

Thank you very much for the morning art and entertainment, dear friend Cathy!
