Led Zeppelin cover “Thank You” #BOTB showdown

Good-morning kittens and dawgs! Welcome back for round two of BoTB. I know what you’re thinking, another unlikely band choice featured here today. Hard rock isn’t my forte, but every now and again they produce a middle of the road rock number that resonates well with this kitty Cathy.

(Thank You lyrics. Led Zeppelin is not a contender)

Robert Plant wrote the 1969 song for his then wife, Maureen.  I have the love of my precious DH, my children, my parents, other family, and lifelong good friends; some of which are found in Blogosphere. To you, I say…Thank You!

Let’s get this showdown on the road, shall we? I present you with contender # 1, Chris Cornell!

Now, let’s hear from contender #2, Mike Masse & Jeff Hall!

I think it’s important to let others know how thankful I am when they do something for me. I never want to take another for granted or to make them feel that I am. I strive always to say “thank-you” no matter how small or big the deed is; my gratitude is always expressed. How important is this to you? Do you say thank you to others?

Okay, who gets your vote in this round? Will it be Chris Cornell or Mike Masse & Jeff Hall? Decision! Decisions! Decisions! There is no wrong vote, folks. Just tell us in comments which artist you like best and why.

The polls close midnight on November 21st; I’ll share the results along with my pick on the 22nd. Mark your calendar and check back to see if your artist wins!

Thank-you for joining in on the fun. This is Curious as a Cathy signing off with one more Thank You cover for your listening pleasure. 😉

Pssst. Pssst. The fun continues with more epic battles taking place at these amazing bloggers sites. Check ’em out!

  1. Oh this is hard — because no one can replace Zepellin in my mind. no cover would ever be as good or better. But I have to choose don’t I? LOL I think I will go with Masse and Hall because I do like the acoustic live feel. and they did a pretty good job.

    1. Les, thanks for playing along. M&J are grand standing this round and it looks like they are going to be victorious, but it’s not over until it’s over, right?

  2. I hope i”m not late with the voting. I think I enjoyed Mike Mass and Jeff hall more….still hard to choose.

Hope you are having a great week! Thanks for dancing with us Cathy! *HUGS*

    1. Colette, you’re not late at all. I’ll have the results on Sunday, so hopefully you’ll stop by to see if your pick Masse & Hall are name. Judging by the voting pattern it looks like they have this one in the bag! Thanks for playing along, my friend. I’ll be by soon to dance with you!

  3. They both had the style of a middle-of-the-week club act. Anyway, give my vote to Mike and Jeff. Thanks, as always, for this battle and all the others.

  4. As we approach Thanksgiving, it’s natural for our hearts to be tuned into to gratitude. This song was so appropriate. I do try to be thankful for all that I have and make every effort to spread that around, especially over the little things.

That said, I am thankful for this song today, I really did need to hear it. My vote goes to Mike and Jeff, their version just seemed smoother to my ears, this morning.

  5. I’m always grateful. I think for a blogger, one of the best ways you can show gratitude and them them is to leave a comment for the hard work they did in producing the blog post. So this is my way of saying thanks to you. Your battles are always entertaining.
For this battle, I’m going with Chris Cornell. He works great unplugged and his rendition of this song is smashing.

    1. Jeffrey, I’m thankful for the blogging community and all the wonderful folks I’ve met along the way. I had no clue that I would enjoy doing this sort of thing so much. Thank you for voting for Cornell. You make #4 going with him. 🙂 Have a funtastic week and I’ll see you on the 1st, if not before then!

  6. Hi again, dear Cathy! I needed to reply to your question using a new comment box because G+ does not work for me in the reply box.

As I make the rounds on BOTB day I often find myself voting for the act that can better replicate the sound of the original. If you had pitted Tesla against Mike & Jeff, it would have made my voting decision that much harder because they both wax Zeppelinesque.

    Great contest, dear friend!

    1. Joyce, sometimes it’s hard to pick an artist. Maybe one way for you to look at is, if you can’t find a band you like, to choice the less offender of the two. lol Oh well, it’s always nice to see you hop over and dance with me! I’m high tailing it over to your place next.

  7. I’m a big fan of Led Zeppelin and Thank You is one of my favorite songs by them. Chris Cornell gets my voice his gritty voice does deliver emotion to the song

    1. Mike, you’re #3 to vote for Chris Cornell. This showdown isn’t going to be a sell out for Masse & Hall. Thanks for stopping by. Now to hop over to your place!

  8. Hey, girl! I’m pretty psyched about both versions but I’m going to go with Mike Masse & Jeff Hall! I love an acoustic ANYTHING, truth be told. Lovely pairing for the battle!

Thanks for being thankful. Kind is always best.

  9. I confess I couldn’t understand much of what Chris was saying, which makes a song like this less appealing. However, Mutt and Jeff… I mean, Mike and Jeff were crystal clear. What beautiful lyrics and they did such a nice job with it. I liked it best when they sang together, but the whole thing was really good.

On a different note, it made me a bit sad to read that Plant wrote this for his then-wife. The sentiment of this song was so loving that it breaks my heart more than a little that it stopped being that way. ::sigh::

So, THANK YOU for putting up such a great song!!!

Once again, a vote for Mike and Jeff from me:)

  10. I really like the acoustic version of Mike Masse and Jeff Hall. It seemed to go more in keeping with the lyrics. I enjoyed Chris’s version also but my vote got to the 2nd version of M & J.

  11. I am generous with my thank you’s. The world is such an ugly place most of the time, but gratitude shines a light, brightens the darkness. And brings a smile.

Both these covers are excellent. The string guitar adds the softness this song needs, and both played well. A tough decision, but I nudge just a little more towards Chris Cornell. I think its his slightly gritty voice that add the proper emotional inflection. Great song, good battle.

    1. Donna, you’re right the world is too ugly most time to not be a little kind. Good for you for being generous with your thank yous. *applaud* You’re definitely siding with the minority with your vote. I think as of yet only you and Lee have voted for Chris. Now to check out your song pick & bands!

  12. Oooohhhhh, love this one! Love the original, and love the contenders you chose for the battle, too. Our collective vote (my honey’s playing along today) goes to Mike Masse & Jeff Hall; great, great sound there.
    Guilie @ Quiet Laughter

  13. I’m a fan of Mike Masse and Jeff Hall. Have been ever since I heard their cover of Toto’s Africa. I liked Chris Cornell’s version but Mike & Jeff just did it better, in my opinion. Please give my vote to Mike & Jeff. And if you haven’t seen their version of Africa, be sure to check it out sometime.
    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. Michele, Geez, I’m dragging my feet this round. I have too much on my plate. I’m totally glad you got my to vote. Mike & Jeff is new-to-me, as is Chris Cornell. It looks like M&J are taking this competition by storm. Of course, it could turn around. Now to dance of to see you! 😉

  14. I vote for Mike and Jeff because the opening is sweet and tender, as are other parts of the song. I think Chris needs to take the marbles out of his mouth.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Janie, gotcha down for M&J. I have yet to decide who gets my vote; both are new-to-me. Thanks for dropping in and playing along. Have a tunetastic week!

  15. Hi, dear Cathy!

I’m back from my four day blogging break and you are my first stop on the BOTB circuit this morning. I love this Zep song and plan to use Tesla’s version in an upcoming battle of my own. In these cover competitions I tend to favor acts that succeed in closely imitating the sound of the original. Mike Masse & Jeff Hall accomplish that. I got goose bumps as soon as the vocals began. With Mike and Jeff, more is more. The combination of two vocalists and two guitarists gives their rendition a fuller sound and greater impact. I enjoyed Chris’s performance, too, but Mike & Jeff blew me away and they get my vote.

Thanks for another excellent match-up, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom, how cool you plan to use Tesla’s cover! I almost threw this band into the mix, but it was so close to Zep’s that I felt like it would win hands down. What do you think; would they have your vote? Thanks for coming by and voting. I love how I have so many nice friends like you in Blogosphere. It sure makes doing this all the more fun. 🙂

  16. Hi, CATHY ~
‘LED ZEPPELIN II’ was probably the 3rd Rock album I ever owned, and it contained this song, ‘THANK YOU’.

I haven’t been a LedZep fan for ages, but I still love their song (also from ‘LZ II’) ‘WHAT IS AND WHAT SHOULD NEVER BE’.

Both of these recordings were pretty good, but the first one was a tad harsh, while Masse & Hall did it very much like the original – the same phrasing and volume shifts. So, I liked their version a bit better; it reminded me of being young and listening to ‘LZ II’.

You know who could have really done a very dramatic version of this? Yep, that’s right: WILLIAM SHATNER. Ha!

    ~ D-FensDogG
    ‘Loyal American Underground’

    1. Stephen, yeah a Shatner over-the-top cover of this song is exactly what we needed for this competition; unfortunately he didn’t record one (or one that I know of anyhow). So, y’all are stuck with these two artists. lol Gotcha down for M&J. I’m running behind schedule because yesterday we went to a wake (a former co-worker & friend of DH’s) and today I have an appointment that needs my attention, but I can’t wait to stop by to listen to your two artists and cover song choice. See you soon!

      1. CATHY, my sincere condolences regarding your Mother. I saw the comment on someone else’s blog.

Words fail. But I know the pain, because I’ve been an “adult orphan” for many years now. It’s something we never really fully get over.

I hope you find a measure of peace of mind soon, my friend.

        ~ D-FensDogG (Stephen)

        1. Stephen, ahhh, I’m really confused. I don’t know what I said on a comment that made you think my mother passed. I’m terribly, terribly sorry for what ever I wrote. DH had a friend who died and we attended his wake on Sunday. Maybe that’s what you saw. Gee, do you recall where you saw my comment? I need to see if I can reply to my own comment clarifying what I meant. But….thank you for your thoughtfulness all the same. That means so much to me.

  17. Hey Kitty Cathy! I love this song and my vote goes to contender #2, Mike Masse & Jeff Hall! That first contender was good, but I liked the acoustic of the second one.
Acknowledging a kindness is very important to me. If not for so many recent prayers and concerns, I’d fell rather lonely! Thank you for being there, Cathy (smile)>

    Have fun with your battle.

    1. Thanks for dropping in Dixie-Chickadee! You’re always in my thoughts & prayers. I have you down for M&J. Just got home from a wake, but I’ll stop by your place soon. Have a good evening!

  18. Nothing wrong with showing gratitude.

Nice hearing these covers of a Zep song I often don’t pay much attention to. Hearing them in a new light adds a new dimension to the song.

Cornell’s is a drifty nice acoustic version, heartfelt, but also filled with a certain sense of angst and longing. Beautiful!

Masse and Hall have a mellow opening that builds up in dynamics. This was pleasant listening and well performed by the artists.

The win I have to give to Chris Cornell because it was more intense and effective.

    Arlee Bird
    Tossing It Out

    1. Lee, I never really knew the lyrics of this song until now. I’m glad I read them and decided to go with the song for this battle. Thanks for casting your vote. I have you down for Cornell. Have a tunetastic week!
