Laughs, This Day in History, & #BoTB results

Visit Sandee for Tuesday Fun!

On Friday evening, I had another mishap.  This time I tripped going up our steps in front of our house.  I couldn’t catch myself since I had my hands tucked in my jacket pocket and as I saw that step approaching my face at an alarming speed I threw my head back catching my chin on the edge.  That sounds awful and it hurt but the pain was manageable. I was certain nothing was broken despite the immediate onset of sore muscles and a stiff jaw. I had some pain near my right ear and I felt a slight misalignment of my teeth. Rest assured my teeth survived the clatter. I managed to clamp my mouth tight in the fall.  That was probably a reflex.  Anywho, I followed up yesterday per my dentist to see an oral surgeon and then my primary physician to make sure there wasn’t a fracture.  The good mews is I was right nothing is broken. PTL! The doctor said I had a classic injury.  Basically, if I remember correctly, he said it’s where my lower jaw shifts the opposition direction sorta slamming against the TMJ which causes bleeding/bruising (that’s why my teeth fit mismatched) which in time will fix itself.  I’m on a soft diet for the next 5-7 days to allow my jaw some healing.  The primary doctor made sure everything worked well which is other than the residual soreness but it’s a lot better today than on Friday.  I can lift my left arm up without grimacing. God certainly had His angels (they had to be small ones since they couldn’t keep me from hitting that step hard *wink*)  posted by my side when I had that accident.  All things considering I’m a happy gal and I certainly appreciated y’alls prayers.

Okay, it’s time to get random a bit. One of my goals for this year is to learn something new and then to share it with you, my loyal Kittens and Dawgs!  I can always find interesting tidbits when looking to the past and This Day in History is a great place for inspiration.

John McCausland Image borrowed from Wikipedia

Who is John McCausland?  I didn’t know the name, either. McCausland,  age 90, was a General in the Civil War and the last Confederate to who died on this day in 1927 according to history.com. That’s more than 60 years after the war ended.  What intrigued me about this is that the man was a war criminal and two he lived in my home state of WV. Wikipedia reports these factoids:

After the war, McCausland spent two years in Europe and Mexico before returning to the United States He faced arson charges for the burning of Chambersburg, but was pardoned by President Ulysses S. Grant. He acquired a tract of 6,000 acres  in Mason County, West Virginia, where he lived as a farmer for more than 60 years.

It’s time to announce last week’s BoTB results between Peggy Lee and Dinah Shore.  This was a tight battle until the one fair-haired gal took the lead. The breakdown revealed Peggy snagging Tom, Brian, Eugenia, John, Mary, & Amy’s votes (6) and with Dinah capturing Lee, Stephen, Mimi, Sandee, Debbie, Sandy, Cherdo, Birgit, Mike, and MY votes (10).

Dinah finally pulled out in front to secure the battle and to claim the golden mic award in this showdown.

🎉Congrats Dinah! 👏

  1. This post sneaked past me this week, but I was watching for your BOTB results and went back when I didn’t see them.

Another close contest where I was on the winning side!

I cringed when I read your account of falling. I think about falling a lot lately–not that I want to fall, but that I’m afraid that I might. Stay safe!

    1. Lee,

Falling is never fun and it’s something that bothers me. Medically speaking I have no reason for my falls other than I get into too much of a hurry generally. I have to really slow things down because recovery time gets slower every passing year. Thanks for stopping in for a visit.

  2. After a fall like that – …I think you could join the Marvel team…i’m happy for you that you didn’t break anything. Just thinking about it makes me cringe. I shattered my elbow in 2012 and doc said I had to have total elbow reconstruction..ugh.. The break wasn’t painful really but the follow up PT and exercises was something I never want to go through again.. Glad Dina Shore got some love over here. And I am always interesting in learning new things – so that’s great that you offer that up.

    1. Sandy,

I think I’m invincible, yeah that’s it I’m ‘Invincible Woman’. That might’ve been believable 35-40 years but not so much these days. lol These days if I escape serious harm from an injury then I count myself blessed. WOW, your shattered elbow sounded horrible! And, you said the break wasn’t painful. That’s kind of crazy. DH broke his ankle in 1995-96 and it was very painful. Did you heal well after your mishap? Do you have any complications from that incident? The PT & exercise had to be painful. Over the weekend with my stiff shoulders and arms, I could barely lift a full glass. That’s mostly gone now. Thank the good Lord! Thanks for popping by! 😉

    1. My chin is sore to the touch, body stiffness almost gone, and my jaw still isn’t a 100% but I’m getting there! Overall I’m quite better from Friday night.

  3. You seem to be having quite a time, lately, Cathy. 🙁 Thank goodness you weren’t seriously hurt. Best wishes for speedy healing! Nice to know my choice won this round of BOTB. Take good care of yourself, dear friend.

  4. Meowza! Be careful out there. Our Female Human has a “tripping” problem. She’s fallen up the stairs in the house twice and once even broke her toe on the furniture so bad the bone pushed through. We sure wish she was as graceful as us felines! Feel better soon!

    1. Alberto,

The broke toe sounds so painful. Was surgery needed? Hopefully neither you or I will have any more problems with stairs. Blessings to you!

      1. The ER doctor laughed and said they’d never seen anything like it, then bandaged it and put me in a boot for several months. The worse part was having to tell people how it happened. Klutz is my middle name.

  5. CATHY ~
Very sorry to learn of your mishap, but I’m glad you’re basically alright. Rest that jaw for the big steak and lobster you can soon celebrate your healing with.

Very good Battle! Good song, good recordings – naturally it was competitive. That’s how ya do it, Sister!

    See ya next time.

  6. I’m so happy you didn’t break anything and that you’ll be fine when everything rotates back where it belongs. I’ve done that soft food thing and it’s fun in the beginning and then you want meat.

I didn’t know anything about this general. Very interesting.

I love picking what song I like the best. It gets you to revisit songs you’ve not heard in a long time.

Thank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love you. ♥

  7. Oh do hope you are ‘on the mend’ ~ sending lots of healing energy hugs ~ Lovely post, photos, music and quotes ~ fun!

    Happy Day to you,

  8. Oooh, I do hope you’re feeling better. Nasty fall! They used to be nothing when I was younger. Now, every fall is an opportunity for disaster. Glad yours is working out.

  9. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for the update on your medical status, dear friend! I’ve been thinking about you and keeping fingers crossed that your check-ups would yield favorable mews. PTL you have no broken bones! A soft diet for a week is inconvenient, but a small price to pay if it means total recovery.

It was interesting to learn about Confederate Civil War General John McCausland. Mrs. Shady is a history buff and especially a Civil War buff. I am sure she knows about McCausland’s military career, but probably not about his life as a farmer after the war. He lived a very long life compared to many of his contemporaries.

That quote about a woman frequently changing her mind is funny and is also very true! 🙂

I’m sorry your ears didn’t match mine in the band battle this round, and sorry my horse lost the race by a nose. I watched The Dinah Shore Show every week and liked her down to earth personality, but she was not one of my favorite singers. Truth be told, Peggy Lee is not a favorite either because I prefer soul singers and rockers, but in this battle I liked Peggy’s recording better.

I hope it doesn’t hurt to drink your hot coffee on a cold winter morning. I am so relieved to learn that the mews is mostly good following that scary fall. Please take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

The soft diet is a small price to pay for sure. Thankfully drinking hot beverages doesn’t bother me. It’s been so frigid these past two mornings that I’m glad to have a cup of hot coffee or tea to sip on. I thought Peggy Lee did a good job on the cover and generally, I’d go with her in a heartbeat but this song didn’t seem to match the best that her vocals could bring to the showdown. Dinah’s more refined sound seemed more fitting but like you, I don’t consider either artists my favorites. They are good but not good enough to listen to all the time. Thanks for checking in on things at CAAC. Have a pAwesome day, dear friend!
