It’s time to Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo!

This is the second annual Roctober Mewsic Festival hosted by Mary from Jingle Jangle Jungle and I’m happy to join along with her in the fun.

This month, I’m revisiting some of the classic 70s mewsicians and songs that either I didn’t catch the artist/band name or just forgot that I loved in my teen years. I hope you’ll stick around to enjoy some lost gems from the past.

Rick Derringer wrote Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo for Johnny Winters And which he was a member of in 1970. Winters thought the song was a bit corny and wouldn’t do well.  The original song ranked #154 on the Billboard 200 album charts. Little did Winters know a few years later Derringer would not only record Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo but that it would hit the top 40s for the songwriter/guitarist.

Crazy tidbit, did you know Derringer sang lead on the 1964 #1 US Billboard Hot 100 chart cover hit, Hang On Sloopy (The McCoys)? Yep, he changed the name of his band from Rick & the Raiders to The McCoys to avoid confusion with Paul Revere & the Raiders.

Derringer had two other songs I remember from the 70s, Cheap Tequila and Uncomplicated released on his 1973 debut album, All American Boy (US #25). Many of the songs on his album are introductions but it served to remind me just how talented the dude is and definitely a bit underrated in my humble opinion. I invite you to hit play and rewind to yesteryear.

I’m currently on vacation with DH. We’re doing stuff locally, but anytime you can break away from the normal daily grind then it energizes the mind and body but I’ll be back tomorrow with another edition of Rocktober Mewsic Fest!

  1. I’m surprised Rick wasn’t able to talk Johnny’s brother Edgar into doing “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Coo” while he was playing lead guitar for the Edgar Winter Group.

  2. I’ve always liked this song. In fact, I own the album ‘All American Boy’ and have plans to use one of the lesser known songs from it in a future BOTB installment (probably against Blue Oyster Cult).

Although it isn’t the song I’m planning to use later, the track ‘IT’S RAINING’ is probably my favorite from that LP. Wow! That song is so dang catchy! And it’s an earworm to me. I’ll probably be humming it now for the rest of the night.

  3. I thought that name was familiar. We actually saw Rick Derringer a few years ago when he was doing a “Hippiefest” tour. Fun times.

  4. I remember this one. I’m enjoying these blasts from the past.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. Love and hugs. ♥
