Indian summer melts into autumn days with leaves falling down + BOTB results

Posted on October 9, 2017
NEW Brushstroke creation using original photo shared here.

Good morning, Kittens and Dawgs! It’s fabulous to see you! Are you ready to groove to some mewsic?  Our theme this week is songs about “Autumn” but we’re not finicky if you have tunes to share then we’re ready to boogie with you and we invite you step on the dance floor with  XmasDolly, Stacy, Colette, and little ole me!

First, let me make a quick announcement. Last week, I asked y’all to vote for your favorite artist covering Marvin Gaye’s hit, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” in my #BoTB showdown between legendary R&B artist Ella Fitzgerald and country mewsic mogul, Ronnie Milsap. Both artists seemed like unlikely choices for this song but they were happy discoveries nonetheless doing a great job on each perspective cover. When I looked at each big name I thought I’d like Ella better than Ronnie and after I listened to them my opinion changed. I loved Milsap’s not-so-country rendition best stealing my vote!

The final tally…

Fitzgerald – 2
Milsap -6

This short Van Morrison playlist is made of new-to-me songs.

  1. “Meet Me in the Indian Summer” describes our East Tennessee weather which certainly doesn’t feel a whole lot like fall. This song is from Morrison’s 2002  Down the Road album which positioned on the US album charts at #25 and in the UK #6, this single raked #112 in the UK.
  2. “Golden Autumn Days” is from Morrison’s 1999 album, Back On Top. I often do not listen to the lyrics, mostly because my brain can’t follow along. I liked the melody but the song tells about a mugging on the street of Britain.
  3. “When the Leaves Come Falling Down” is another track from Morrison’s Back On Top (UK “Album Chart” #11; USA “Billboard 200” #28) and is a beautiful ballad encompassing autumn’s beauty in the reflections of a love or at least this in my interruption of the song. What do you think?

This is a weekly hop for mewsic enthusiasts regardless if you follow our weekly theme or not if you have mewsic to share then we’re ready to dance with you. Otherwise, I ask that you do not link non-mewsic posts below to boost traffic to your site. You’re welcome to leave your URL in comments with a brief description inviting me to check it out. Thank you!

How’s autumn looking where you live, peak or past peak, or way long gone?

Fill in the blank, my favorite fall activity is ____!

When was the last time you went on a hayride?

Do you like sitting around an open fire telling ghost stories, roasting marshmallows, or simply enjoy the company of friends/family over quiet conversation?

What mewsic moves you today?

Before I scat, my blogger pal, McGuffy’s Reader has resurrected an old post series to prompt positive vibes for a sad world.

This is what Annie says about “Sparks”…

I believe we are meant to be lights in this world. If we allow our light to shine, we can see where we are going. It is then that we can begin to truly see each other clearly. Together, we can light up the entire world!

I certainly agree with her. We do need to be a light for others to see their way through the storm. In keeping with my mewsic theme, I decided to share with you some of my favorite photos of my beautiful East Tennessee landscape. Hopefully these images will make you feel good today, perhaps even inspired to get out to enjoy the world around you!

CADES COVE IN THE SMOKY’S – rural community for farmers and loggers who settled in the valley of the Smoky’s.
NC VIEW OF THE SMOKY’S – 441S in the Smoky’s just on the NC side looking east over the valley
SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAINS – A view, of the clouds settling between the mountain peaks, heading toward Clingman’s Dome on an early fall morning

You’re welcome to download any or all of my photos for FREE (Right click to save image to your computer). Can you let me know in comments which image(s) you picked? 😘

” It only takes a spark to get a fire going”

I’m gonna close with my favorite song by last week’s #BoTB winner and if you’d this part of my post then mark your calendar for the next showdown on October 15th.

My favorite version of the grapevine song is the California Raisins.

I never got to see them perform live. I did see Ronnie Milsap, in 1973.

      Myke,

The California Raisins commercials are great! That’s cool you got to see Ronnie Milsap in concert. I was only 12 in 1973 and probably did not know Ronnie Milsap but by the time I was in my mid-teens he was familiar to me.

What a great song to bring in Autumn which is still quite green here due to our summer temps. It supposed to become more normal here…thank God! I hate the heat so I’m looking forward to cooler temps. I am waiting for the beautiful colours and I love to walk in nature during this time. I love a campfire and do everything that was mentioned.

      Birgit,

We have a lot of green, too. But…I do see signs of fall. It’s interesting that you being Canadian are looking forward to the cooler temps, most I know are not. I like autumn weather but not winter. However, I’m trying to live in the moment to enjoy each season despite what I like or don’t like about it. Time flies way too fast!

Van Morrison is a great way to spend the day. Thank you for that. As I mentioned in my response to your comment on my page, I woke up to snow this morning. It seems that Fall only lasted about a week here. Hopefully this is just a hiccup in Mother Nature’s plans and we’ll be back to fall again soon. Not to worry, I’m still wearing my shorts in protest!

      Mary,

Snow?! Oh good grief, that’s not cool! Well..it is cool but not in a fun sense. 🙂 We are a long way from that kind of weather but I do remember one Halloween when Mother Nature ushed snow showers with lots of cold wind. It didn’t stay around but it was colder than I wanted to be for sure. The wind made it more miserable feeling, too.

      Ellen,

You’re welcome. I didn’t mean to imply I was helping a non-profit. What I meant was the Paypal “donate” button’s intended use is for non-profit, so I was trying the “Buy Now” button for anyone who wanted to donate for use of my images but since that caused confusion I removed it. I didn’t want anyone to feel I was misrepresenting myself in any way. However, the images are free to download! 🙂

We’ll be into November before the trees go bare. We are still having some 90 degree days here. The trees are changing, but it’s a slow process.

    Love your quote. Spot on.

      Sandee,

We’ll have leaves hanging around in November, too. We even had them still on the tree last December. I believe that’s because of the dry weather. You guys are still quite warm. It’s in the low 80s here and that’s too warm for me. I’m ready for the change which is expected to come early next week.

    Hi, Cathy!

It doesn’t surprise me that Ronnie Milsap took your BOTB contest. I’m happy to know your ears matched mine and that he got your vote after much deliberation. It was a pleasure to listen to your selection of songs about Indian Summer, Autumn and falling leaves.Van Morrison has one of the most distinctive voices in popular music. How well I remember his first hit single “Brown Eyed Girl.” It was one of the most popular sounds on campus my freshman year of college. It’s nice to know that Van is still active all these years later. Last month he released his 37th studio album! Morrison’s third song on your play list, “When the Leaves Come Falling Down,” struck me as metaphorical. Perhaps he is referring to the “autumn” of his lover’s life, pledging to be by her side “when the leaves come falling down,” meaning when she grows older and her beauty fades away. I’m sure you remember Frank Sinatra’s hit “It Was A Very Good Year”:

But now the days grow short
I’m in the autumn of the year
And now I think of my life as vintage wine
    From fine old kegs

To answer your questions about autumn, it is still uncomfortably warm and humid here in Florida. If it doesn’t feel like fall up there in Tennessee, you can imagine how sticky it still is down here.

Fill in the blank, my favorite fall activity is ____!
ANSWER: hunkering down in the air conditioning! 🙂

The last time I went on a hayride was the fall of 1967 up at State College, around the same time that Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” was dominating the radio waves. I asked a freshman girl to be my date for the hayride and to this day deeply regret how I behaved (or didn’t behave) on our first (and last) date.

I have always enjoyed sitting around a fire telling ghost stories but, here in Florida, the last thing most of us want is to be anywhere near another source of heat. 🙂

My favorite fall picture of yours is the first one, Cade’s Cove in the Smokys. I clicked twice to enlarge the image to jumbo size and found it so pleasing that I have set it as my desktop background. Thank you!

I also enjoyed listening to the inspiring song “Pass It On” by Kurt Kaiser and to BOTB winner Ronnie Milsap’s “Smoky Mountain Rain.” Thanks for posting another colorful Gil Elvgren pinup.

Thank you very much for the mewsic, pictures and inspiration, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

First thank you for using my “Cades Cove in the Smoky’s” as your desktop wallpaper and for letting me know. 🙂 I can imagine the thoughts of an open fire not being one many Floridians welcome. It’s a bit of a stretch for me right now but I loved doing this in the days when we visited often my in-laws in southern WV when our children were still young. That’s almost a magical time as I relish looking back to those days now forever gone.

Kurt Kaiser visited our church in the 80s and he led our choir in singing “Pass It On”. I remembered liking it then as much as I like it now. It’s very uplifting song. Thanks for stopping by this morning. I hope y’all get some relief from the heat soon. Next week’s forecast is calling for a bit of cool down which I’m looking forward to! Have a tunetastic week, dear friend!

      Michele,

I love going to the mountains to see the clouds nestled between the peaks like in this photo. The smoke (clouds) on the mountains remind me of the view from Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbor, Maine of the Porcupine Islands. The clouds resemble the sea and the mountain tops are like islands. 🙂 I hope you downloaded the image for your enjoyment anytime! 😉
