Holiday Road and Other Vacation/Travel Songs

Thanks for joining me on the dance floor today! The first tune to pop in my head for this week’s theme “Vacation Songs” was Lindsey Buckingham Holiday Road. We don’t take an annual vacation. The last time we took one was in 2004. I’m super excited about our upcoming vacation this fall. How do will we cram everything we want to do in 2-weeks? I don’t know but we’ll get to a lot of the points of interest that we’re jotting down.

An Aww Mondays moment is a scan of an old photo captured in 1989 with my old Nikon 35mm SLR camera from our first Maine vacation at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse of DD#1 and DH

To get everyone in the mood for their road trip and adventures ahead, I consulted the Internet using key words vacation or travel to pull together my 10-song playlist. Roll the window down and hit play to unwind with the breeze in your hair!

As in vacations past it’ll be another I DROVE ALL NIGHT with minimal stops to reach our first SWEET VACATION destination. I can only imagine the ESCAPADEs we’ll find ourselves in while on HOLIDAY. There’s sure to be plenty of DAY TRIPPERS and hopefully plenty of SUNSHINE AND SUMMERTIME left for our VACATION days. The TRAVELLING is the worst part but it’s worth it to keep the SHOULDER TO THE WHEEL RUNNIN’ DOWN A DREAM to return to Maine.

Sunset at Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park. DH captured this stunning view with our first digital camera in 2004.

The theme this week is “Vacation Songs”.

This is a music linky party.  Your co-hostess are Stacy, Alana, and Me.   Every other week we have a suggested music theme (see weekly prompts here) to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our music enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

I spoke with Marie. She had been in the hospital due to inner ear problems vertigo or something similar that had her blood pressure dangerous high.  She’s home taking it easy.  She really wants to return in August after she gets this problem under control and after she gets her back shot.  Keep those prayers going!  It’s time to wind things down.  Special thanks to Robin from Songbird’s Crazy World for being this month’s honorary co-hostess.  It’s always a joy to have you fill in and you’re welcome to do it anytime, my friend! Before I jump off here, I’d like to send birthday wishes to DH!  He’s a swell fella.  In honor of my special guy, I built a playlist of songs released the year he was born. This is Dedicated to the One I Love! Happy Birthday, Sweetie! This is CAAC signing off,  have a boogietastic week!

    1. Natasha,

I dropped Twitter almost three years ago. I really haven’t missed that social media platform in the least. When Big Media got crazier in their policies by blocking anyone disagreeing with their agenda, then that was enough for me. I cancelled it. Now that Elon Musk runs things and has changed things, I may consider signing up again, but that’ll have to wait until after vacation. I have too much on my plate right now. I do appreciate you wanting to tag me, though. 😉

  1. Mary Hopkin’s “Those Were the Days” that I shared this time.

I’m not sure qualifies for a vacation song. But it has the vibe of taking us down our beautiful memory lane. And my post is all about that and my precious teacher, Ms. Hall in New Castle Upon Tyne, UK. 🙂

    1. Natasha,

As I’ve said before if you have music to share then we want you to join the party! For most, the themes give us direction to build our playlists. Thanks for joining the party, my dear!

  2. Hello Darling,

Now I am super excited about your vacation. Can’t wait for you to have a good time. You deserve that and more.

Happy birthday to your DH and loads of wonderful years going forward.

That’s a very endearing picture of him and your son.

The songs as always have my <3 Love you playlist always, always. <3

Thank you for sharing about Marie dearest. I’m glad she is on the mend and taking it easy. I continue to hold her in prayers, love and light. Look forward to having her back in the groove.

Biggest hug, love, light and laughter.

    Stay gorgeous hun. xoxo

    1. Natasha,

We’re very excited about our upcoming vacation this fall. It’ll be here before we know it! Other than seeing the beautiful state of Maine again, we’ll get to see our youngest daughter (DD#2). It’s been a long time since we’ve seen her. I love the picture of DH and our first daughter! Thanks for dropping by to boogieing with me, my friend. 😉

  3. I love Cyndi Lauper! Happy Birthday to DH and here’s hoping Marie gets better. Keep rockin’ and that vacay will be here sooner than you think!

  4. I picked the Vacation song too – it was the obvious choice! LOL. I was also being lazy and not trying to think too hard about it. I know my other pick will turn some people off but isn’t that the point here – to share other songs? Anyway, happy Monday and thanks for hosting!

    1. Absolutely, share the music that works for you and it’s really a good thing for others to listen to stuff they wouldn’t other wise just for the exposure. 🙂 Thanks for joining the party, my dear!

    1. Hey Robin,

The month is going by super fast! Your themes were great as always and it’s a joy having you fill in, my friend. I’m glad you enjoyed my playlist! 😉

  5. I love Day Tripper in this set because one day trips can be so much fun. We often explore new restaurants, entertainment venues, shops, flea markets etc. and all of them within a two hour drive of the house. I have that album of remastered songs and it is brilliant from top to bottom. Have a blessed week.

    1. We like taking day trips of nearby places. However, we haven’t done any of that this year because we’re too busy with other things which makes vacation look all the better. I find when ever you break away from your normal routine it’s always a nice treat!

    1. Mimi,

It’s always sad when vacation ends. At least you make a point of taking one every year. That’s been a shortcoming on our part. It costs so much to get away but you know we’re going to try to do more get aways even if it’s for a long weekend or a week that’s closer. It’s important to enjoy special time away just the two of us. Thanks for keeping Marie in your prayers.

  6. Thank you for your update on Marie and sharing your stunning sunset. Vertigo (I suffer from it from time to time) can be quite terrible and I am sorry she has been suffering like that. Hopefully Marie can return next month. I enjoyed your set. “Holiday Road” is familiar to me but I had no idea Lindsey Buckingham did it. Many of the others weren’t familiar but enjoyable. I hope you have a wonderful vacation when the time comes. Happy birthday to your dh; 1959 was a good year for music and I’ll listen to those later. Alana ramblinwitham

    1. Alana,

Vertigo is no fun from the sound of it. Thankfully that’s something I haven’t experienced unless I had an ear infection. Sometimes when my allergies are really bad I get kind of a dizzy feeling but I know it’s no where near as bad as someone who suffers with vertigo. We’re getting more and more excited each passing down. This summer is really speeding by faster than I thought it would.

  7. Hi Cathy. Nice you are going on vacation. We haven’t been anywhere in a long time either. I love Cindy’s music. The photo is just too adorable and from 1989. Have a great day today.

  8. Aww on your picture of DH and your daughter. So adorable.

Love your videos. Summer travel was such fun. Don’t do much anymore.

Thanks for the update on Marie. I miss her so.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

What got us through the long road trips was the excitement of our vacation. We were always so stoked to get there and I’m sure that’ll help to propel us when it’s time for ours this fall but we’re so ready for it! Thanks for the birthday wishes for DH. He really appreciated the song. 🙂

  9. Hi Cathy! That’s a great playlist of vacation songs. Planning a trip is always exciting and I hope you have a wonderful time! Poor Marie never seems to get a break, but I’m glad she’s feeling better now. You are such a good friend to keep tabs on her. Please give her my best wishes. And a Happy Birthday to your DH! 🎉

    1. Debbie,

Marie’s ‘feeling better’ is just an improvement over where she was a few days ago. I could tell by the sound of her voice she needs to take extra good care of herself. Poor thing has had so many issues to deal with. I just want her well again, as I know everyone else does, too. Thanks for popping by to enjoy the music and birthday wishes for DH. Have a good week, my friend!

  10. Hi, Cathy!

Happy 4M Monday on Sunday, dear friend! I have returned from my hiatus and am ready to rock with you. I hope your vacation this fall will be as fun and interesting as the one Mrs. Shady and I took last week. We went up to the mid-Atlantic region scouting cities and towns for a potential move in the next year or two.

I enjoyed listening to “Holiday Road,” the song that ties in with my post last week announcing the start of my blog break. I loved Nat’l Lampoon’s Vacation, but was dismayed to recently read an article claiming that Chevy Chase is difficult to work with and disliked by some of his fellow actors.

Awww… I just wanna smooch little DD#1, and I love the “vignette” effect in that picture taken on your first trip to Maine way back in 1989. I also appreciate the image DH snapped in 2004 showing the setting sun at Acadia Natl Park.

I thoroughly enjoyed your song block of vacation and travel songs along with the clever word play that weaves the song titles into your musings about your upcoming getaway to Maine. I had forgotten all about “I Drove All Night,” a song intended for and originally recorded by Roy Orbison. Cyndi Lauper’s version hit the street before Roy’s was released and cracked the top 5 on Cash Box in July, 1989. Celine Dion topped the Canadian chart with her cover in 2003. It’s a great song. I had also forgotten about Janet Jackson’s chart-topping 1990 hit “Escapade.” That video was played heavily on the MTV station where I was working at the time. To audition for a job at that station, I used Madonna’s “Holiday” and other songs by the Material Girl in a video I produced to showcase my abilities as a video editor. This is the first time I am hearing that brilliantly remastered version of The Beatles’ hit “Day Tripper.” WOW! it was also a treat to flash back to 1982 and watch and listen as Belinda Carlisle and her band The Go-Go’s ran through their hit song “Vacation” which brushed the top 5 on Cash Box in September that year. The songs by Lionel, Faith, the Canadian indie rock band Paper Lions and the Jersey rock band Saves The Day are all new to my ears this morning. I enjoyed them.

Yessum, I offer more prayers for Marie as she continues along the road to complete wellness.

Happy birthday to your DH! I am familiar with all of the 1959 songs you posted and enjoyed hearing them again. I’d like to point out that the original 1959 version of “Love Potion No. 9” was by the American R&B group The Clovers. The cover you posted by The Searchers rode the chart in early 1965. Thanks for posting the original 1959 version of “Sea Of Love” waxed by Phil Phillips With The Twilights. The MTV station where I worked in the 80s ran the capable cover by Robert Plant and his retro style R&B group The Honeydrippers, a single that went top 3 in early 1985, I always enjoy the vocal performances of Ray Charles, and loved “Let The Good Times Roll,” brother Ray’s cover of a jump blues song originally recorded by “King of the Jukebox” Louis Jordan in 1946. It’s a different song from the “Let The Good Times Roll” that was a hit in 1956 for the R&B duo Shirley & Lee. The 1959 rockabilly tune “Woo Hoo” by the Rock-A-Teens was big in my neck of the woods and reached the top 20 nationally. It’s an unusual song because the two syllables in the title are the only lyrics. The original pressing on the Doran label is worth a couple hundred dollars to collectors. The Isley Brothers song “Shout” was notably covered by Scottish popper Lulu and by the U.S. girl group The Shangri-Las.

Once again, happy b-day to your wonderful hubby, dear friend Cathy. Have a super week!

    1. Tom,

I’m glad you and Mrs Shady had a nice vacation/home scouting expedition.

Thank you for continuing to keep Marie in your prayers. She’s had such a rough time of things for the last couple of years.

DH had a nice birthday. We stayed home to tackle some chores but we did settle in to do a little TV binging. I made him a cheeseburger pizza and a chocolate cake with vanilla bean buttercream frosting. Both were a big hit! He got plenty of birthday wishes from the kids and friends, too. It was a nice day.

I’m glad you enjoyed the tunes spinning for the dance party this week. It’s always nice when you join the fun. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

      1. Loved this play list with some great old tunes. I keep thinking of the Beach Boys tune..I wanna go home
