Hold Me Thrill Me BOTB Showdown

Our plans changed and won’t be away from home, so I am able to bring to you my regularly scheduled post.

For a long time I thought Harry Noble’s Hold Me Thrill Me recorded by Mel Carter (1965) was the original release but that honor belongs to Karen Chandler in 1952 which actually puts things on an even kill for my battle because I wanted to use female covers.

In this showdown neither of my contenders need an introduction.  Listen to decide on which lady you’d like to hold you thrill you the best.

First contender, Gloria Estefan (1994)
Second contender, Connie Francis (1959)

Polls close at noon (ET) on the 7th!

That concludes this Battle of the Bands.  Join next week to see how this battle pans out.  There are more battle underway today. Participants are listed in my side bar beneath the BOTB banner.  Please, don’t forget to tell me in comments whose your favorite artist.

This is CAAC signing off, have a bandtastic day!  X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. Gloria, for sure. I am a die-hard fan of Gloria Estefan since the early days – what? like, forty years now? Anyhow, in this case I definitely go for her version over Connie’s. I did enjoy the luscious string orchestration of Connie’s version, though. ~Ed.

  2. Love this song! While nobody does “Somebody’s Fool” like Connie Francis – and she does this one quite well too, Gloria was / is la reyna in my area as well as her native Miami. A vote for Gloria Estefan for me, please

  3. CAThy! It’s That YOU!!

Now this is an oldie but a goodie that I have not heard since 1952.

Uh… yeah, yeah. I’m lying about the date. I didn’t even have ears yet in 1952. But, indeed, I haven’t heard it in a long time and it has that warm feeling of “sane times” about it. Unlike this era we are currently experiencing.

Although this song wasn’t used in the movie ‘American Graffiti’, it is quite a bit in style like so many of those great oldies from that great (now also oldie) movie.

Color me surprised! I figured I would probably be voting for the version recorded in 1959 – the same year of my birth – but actually I preferred the more lively rendition by GLORIA ESTEFAN.

    1. Apologies for my absence! I caught a bad cold (possibly even covid) and have also been doing radiation treatments Monday through Friday. This will continue for another few weeks. But it has me sleeping randomly and being gone from home quite a bit.

      I’m voting for Gloria Estefan

      1. Mary,

Don’t worry about it. I was worried about you, though. If you’re not up to filling in as 4M co-hostess then that’s fine. The themes are still in place and everyone knows you offered them. 🙂 The most important thing is you, so listen to your body and sleep! Thanks for voting. I have you down for Gloria Estefan! xo

  4. Connie Francis sang nicely, but after I woke up from trying to listen to her version it was easy for me to cast my vote for Gloria Estefan’s version. She put more life into the song.

    1. Lee,

Is that a thank you for helping you to grab some extra Zs? You’re right about Gloria’s version being more lively. You certainly won’t fall asleep listening to her cover. Gloria takes another vote!

  5. I love Connie Francis, but her cover of the song drags a little too much. I knew Gloria Estefan’s (I have the album) and really like that, and hearing them back-to-back, Gloria kind of sounds like Ms. Franconero… Gloria for me!

    1. John,

I agree Gloria sounds a little like Connie. If her cover was more breathy and she didn’t have an accent then you’d have another Connie. I logged your vote for Gloria Estefan, my friend!

      1. I love Connie’s rendition which sounds like it’s a memory. She gets my vote but Gloria does have a great voice

        1. Birgit,

Oooo, I like the way you described Connie’s cover. It certainly has a more dreamy sound and it was for this reason I went with her rendition in this battle. 🙂 I have you down for Connie Francis, my dear!

    1. Sandee,

Donnie. Connie. Whatever, right? lol Don’t you hate it when your fingers and brain aren’t on the same page? 🙂 I’ll put you down for Gloria.
