Grayscale & Complimenting Colors Art Dabbles

I’m joining Rain’s Kitchen & Garden and the art community for Thursday Art Date. My post title reveals last week and today’s theme. I created a slide gallery for each Procreate sketch because I used the Brushstrokes app on the originals to create painting-like images.

For the grayscale theme, I went with feather. This is a something I wanted to draw for awhile.  After looking at examples, I loved the idea of drawing a quill pen and ink well for the theme.

A couple of weeks ago, I really wanted to illustrate tulips for the warm color art prompt but didn’t have time.  However, I thought why not do that now. After all isn’t it nice to see pretty colors together that are complimenting?

I might have not followed Rain’s idea exactly but then I usually march to the beat of my own drum. 😊

Earlier in the month, I got the chance to make yet another recipe Rain shared with us, her Baked Jelly-filled Donuts. I made a few changes. I used Avocado oil in place of butter and instead of using brown sugar, I used white. My first try wasn’t too shabby.

Rain’s recipe is easy.  For our taste, the donuts weren’t quite sweet enough, so I’ll adjust it next time but see how pretty they look and honestly, this a good recipe.

I’m thankful for the happy news that our son and his wife is expecting a little boy mid-September. How exciting, after his arrival we can say we have a granddaughter and grandson!

I’m thankful that DD#1 got a new job with a better position and pay.

I’m thankful to have some pesky annual appointments that I reluctantly have every other year (or longer if I can get away with it) out of the way.  A big hooray, everything looked good on all my test results from my physical and nothing turned up with my GYN exam.  I’m hopeful the lab results will be good, too.  I see the dentist this afternoon. This I’m not too sure about. One of my top molars chipped off along the backside between two teeth.  The chipped tooth has a big filling, so please say prayers everything goes well!

One more thankful to mention is, we got our taxes done and we don’t owe Uncle Sam anything. Awesome!

You’ll find me next time boogieing on the dance floor with Monday’s Music Moves Me and you’re invited to join the party. This is CAAC signing off,  have a doodletastic day!

  1. I have so much to comment on!! I love your quill pen and ink drawing! The sketch (the first one) is my favourite, congrats on the amazing shading! Love that you have a slideshow too! Your flowers are beautifully complimentary! ☺And you made the jelly doughnuts!!! Aren’t they easy? I want to make more, they get eaten up so fast! I LOVE Ebony and Ivory! That video brings me back! ♥

    1. Rain,

Yes, your recipe is really easy! I made a second batch recently upping the sugar. That hit our sweet tooth better. I betcha these would be good with a sugar glaze! You won’t believe this but we still have some in the freezer just waiting for DH’s cravings to kick in. 🙂

  2. Very well painted, especially the brush. But certainly the tulips are lovely, too.
The donuts I would pass, I´m more the hearty type of gal.
Congrats to the lille boy coming around.
I feel actually really bad. I have heard nothing of my Brother concerning your book.
It is embarrassing for me and so sad for my Niece…

  3. I do enjoy your artwork!

Congratulations on the expected new family member, i will be praying all goes well.

    The donuts look delightful.

Lots of prayers for your dentist visit, i hope all is well.

  4. Congrats on your good news. You must be excited. Those donuts look yummy. It’s always yummy to have a jelly donut. And I like your tulips and your feather pen. You did a great job drawing them. I hope you have a great rest of your week and weekend. Hugs-Erika

  5. Very pretty art. I like the feather, I bet that was a tough one to draw. XO

  6. Your art is always so pretty and those donuts sure look great! Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

  7. Hi, Cathy!

I am here to keep our Thursday Art Date With Rain, dear friend!

The sight of a quill pen and inkwell is hypnotic to me. It puts me in a nostalgic trance and takes me back to the simpler years of life in the 1950s. Such a sight also causes me to wonder what is about to be written. A love letter? A short story? A novel perhaps? My favorite version of your sketch is the Brushstrokes Gloss effect. On your drawing of colorful spring tulips, I pick Brushstrokes Lead as the one that most pleases me.

That dish filled with jelly donuts is also a work of art. I’ll bet DH couldn’t wait to dig in. I can imagine having one or two (or three) with my black coffee first thing in the morning.

It’s a boy! Thanks for sharing the happy news that your son and his wife are expecting a visit from the stork at the end of summer. I’m sure LA will love having a new baby in the family. Congratulations to them! That’s great news about DD#1 getting a better job, too. There is much to celebrate around your family. It is indeed a blessing that you have been passing all of your medical exams with flying colors. I wish you well at the dentist today, hoping that the repair work to your molar will be easy and affordable. Great news about your income tax return as well. It’s a good feeling to be crossing all of those pesky items off your annual to-do list.

i haven’t heard “E & I” for years, and enjoyed listening and watching the video this morning. Both Wonder and McCartney specialize in positive, uplifting songs, and this collaboration is one of their best.

Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, Cathy. I’ll be back to see you on the dance floor on Monday. My next post starts Saturday but runs a full week, so there is no need for you to rush over on the weekend if you have other things to do. Take care, dear friend!

    1. Tom,

Thank you for your early morning visit! Quill pens do put you in a nostalgic state of mind. Like you, I often wonder the same things. What amazed me was the penmanship of our ancestors, especially those from the Victorian era or even longer ago then that. The signers of the Declaration of Independence had beautiful lettering! I used to have pretty handwriting. My hand grows too tired these days to spend long writing letters. There was a day when I use to compose lengthy correspondence with penpals from around the world. That’s all in the past now. For the most part, when I keep in contact with the few remaining penpals I used my computer. The only time I send a letter out now is to LA. Kids love getting mail and I think it’s important that her generation not forget this form of communication. I’ll be sure to report back on Monday, if I don’t forget, how things go at the dentist. Thanks for the reminder of your upcoming post. Have a doodletastic day, my friend!
