Granny

Posted on April 8, 2021

For the month of April, I am sharing with pencil illustrations of some memorable Looney Tunes cartoon characters, as I join a community of insane inspiring people who take part in the annual A to Z Challenge to connect with others in Blogosphere .  I’m certain while I’m figuring out which beloved animated figure I put on paper I will learn the identify of some I had long forgotten and perhaps meet some new ones that didn’t cross my path.

Who is Emma Webster?  It’s Granny!  It wasn’t until 1950 the Granny I know was officially rolled into the animated series.  If you’re interested you watch the short YouTube piece on Granny’s history. Today, I’m sharing my pencil drawing of the sweet old lady.

Until now I had forgotten Granny had a name but it came back to me when I read Yosemite Sam called her ‘Emma’ in the 1953 short, Hare Trimmed.

Do you remember seeing Hare Trimmed?  I do.  🙂

Granny is the owner of Tweety bird and is very protective her beloved pet.  Despite her kind appearance she outsmarts those who threaten her beloved canary.  I didn’t need to look too far on YouTube before I found a great oldie with Granny defending her Tweety bird.  This cartoon like the first were reruns in the 60s and I definitely remember, Tom Tom Tomcat (1953).

I hope that was as fun for you as it was for me to watch again.  Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your day.  I ask that leave a direct link for today’s post in comments to ensure others can find an easy way back to you.  Also,  over the last few months I’ve noticed many bloggers with use Gravatar do not have their active blog address linked to their profile.  You may want to double check yours to make sure it’s listed.  I’m heading over to the A2Z headquarters to see who’s joined the party now.  I hope to see you again tomorrow for the next letter in the alphabet in my Looney Tunes Art Sketch series! X💋X💋 Cathy

Granny was such a kindly lady and such a good pet owner, always looking out for Tweety Bird. You did a great job on her and reminded me she existed. Been a long time!

Great drawing of Granny. She always seemed a bit absent minded to me.

Good job on Granny. My mom used to collect Tweety bird items so I think of her as Granny. She still has some, but doesn’t buy any now.

Granny… yet another character who slipped from my memory. I can’t say I forgot her name, though, because I don’t think I ever knew it. This is so fun following along!

I like Granny and how she doesn’t seem to notice the strange things happening around Tweety, at least, some of the time. It’s amusing to watch her. Sweet drawing.

    Have a lovely day.

I’d forgotten about her too, but now I remember. Give me a bit more time and I’ll look like her. Great job on the sketch. I wish I could draw.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Big hug. ♥

Oh man, that History of Granny video. Another animation commentary channel to follow. YouTube is slowly become the source of my most frequently consumed media.

I love this theme! I grew up in the 80s/90s and used to watch blocks of Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon after school. I might have to go and rewatch some of them soon.

Oh I loved watching the cartoon here-the quick one and the full one. I was laughing and just enjoyed myself. You captured Granny well with her joy in seeing Tweety. The cage is done quite well with the 3D effect…not easy to do. I can’t wait to see this one in colour. I love the one where she owns Tweety, Sylvester and the Bulldog. I love that bulldog who found a kitten and protected it. I am getting ahead of myself. Great job once again.

    Hi Cathy,
Emma reminds me of a Jonathan Edwards song. I didn’t know Granny had an actual name but I loved her—love (because we can relive her cartoons at YouTube anytime — thanks for sharing. Granny is what I want my grandchildren to call me. ha ha ha. The day has gotten away from me and I have not visited half of the pages that I want to. I also have much to do in my Garden Do you think you could help me with some weeds?
    Cheers,

I loved granny, especially when she was beating up on other characters. I didn’t remember her having a name though – it’s funny the things we do and don’t remember.

Hi, Cathy! Happy G-day, dear friend!

It’s interesting how the much loved Granny character evolved in cartoons. She actually seems to have aged the appropriate number of years from her earliest appearances to 1950 when she became a regular character on Tweety & Sylvester. It also interests me that, for a period starting in 1950, Granny was voiced by Bea Benaderet, the actress who starred in the TV sitcoms Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies and voiced another wildly popular animated series The Flintstones. It it also an interesting tidbit that, over the years, it was gradually revealed that Granny’s actual name is Emma Webster. Yessum, Emma was a sweet old lady, but when it came to protecting her pet canary Tweety from the claws and jaws of her sly, sneaky cat Sylvester or any other predator, she was fierce. As we saw in that clip called Granny’s History, she didn’t hesitate to give Sylvester a good beating with an umbrella or anything else she could get her hands on. I liked how Tweety was never worried, always oblivious to the danger he was in, always uttering the line: “I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat.” In cartoon clip #1 we see Bugs, disguised as Granny using, not an anvil, not a heavy steel safe, but a piano as the weapon of choice to squash Yosemite Sam. Within seconds, however, Sam is up on his feet, back to normal and no worse for the wear. Cartoon characters always bounce back! 🙂 Your sketch of Granny holding Tweety bird’s cage is excellent, Cathy. You captured Ganny’s character perfectly, and it must have taken you forever to get the bars of the cage looking just right. It would be fun to see this one brought back In Living Color with a shade of blue used for Granny’s dress and bright yellow color on Tweety.

Thank you for the smiles, dear friend Cathy, and have a wonderful day! See you tamale for your H post!
