Early Autumn #RMF

This is the second annual Roctober Mewsic Festival hosted by Mary from Jingle Jangle Jungle and I’m happy to join along with her in the fun.

With October winding down, so is my mewsic selection. All month I’ve tried keeping my songs toward the classic sounds from my youth whether I remember the songs or not but today I’m switching an artist I don’t remember Cleo Laine singing, ‘Early Autumn’.

I hope you’ll travel with me back in time tomorrow with another edition of Rocktober Mewsic Festival!

    1. John,

Wikipedia educated me a bit on Cleo’s late husband, Sir John Dankworth. He was an English jazz composer, mewsician (sax and clarinet) and film writer. I also learned that Cleo is part Jamaican. Her parents never married. It sounds like she got her mewsical talent from her dad, a building laborer, frequently busked. She’s very amazing and I need to listen to more of her stuff.

  1. Haven’t heard any music from Cleo Laine in a long time! Thanks for sharing this lovely, smooth jazz number. She was extremely popular in the 60s and 70s.

    1. Alana,

Johnny Mercer sounded familiar so I looked him up to learn some of his other hit songs included: “Moon River”, “Days of Wine and Roses”, & “Hooray For Hollywood”. Did you know that Cleo just celebrated her 92nd birthday a few days ago on Oct. 28th? I wonder how her health is at this age? Wikipedia didn’t address it so I’m hoping she’s doing well.

  2. I remember Cleo Laine, but I couldn’t tell you much about her music since I never really listened to it. I like the selection you chose.

    1. Lee,

I’m glad you liked the song I used by Cleo. She has a lovely voice and I don’t know how I missed her years ago. Well…I guess I missed her because she was never introduced to me by the older girls or my auntie and uncles. 🙂

  3. Hi Cathy!

Shhh don’t tell anyone, but I’m here responding on the same day as the post! Can you believe it? I’m not familiar with this one at all.. Shocker, huh? Only a handful of days left in the music fest.. What will we do with our time afterward? Hmmm. Perhaps some early planning for next year?

    1. Mary,

My lips are sealed! You won’t catch me blabbing all over the net that you’re here for a visit today. 😀 It’s tough keeping up with a month-long blogfest. I know I haven’t done too well at it. I’ve been super busy taking care of some stuff here, so that’s kept me preoccupied and limiting my time online. That’s life for you, though. You can’t always have fun every second of the day. I haven’t thought beyond this month, except I have been scheduling daily mewsic posts for December. Driller did this last year and he mentioned doing it again, so I think I’d like to give that a try. It’s not going to be a challenge for anyone other than myself but if others are inspired to play along then that’ll be awesome.

    1. Mike,

I think I didn’t make it very clear but if you tried clicking on the first vintage pinup gal with her skirt caught in the fence then that’ll launch your email program. To subscribe to my daily posts, you need to click the second gal with the caption ‘Mail and Female’. I went ahead with entering your email address, so you’ll probably get a notice to confirm the subscription. Sorry for the mix-up and thanks for signing up. 😉

  4. Hi, Cathy!

I am familiar with English singer and actress Cleo Laine. She was a big name in my youth and appeared on TV shows I watched including David Frost, Dick Cavett, Jack Jones, Dinah Shore, The Today Show, The Tonight Show, Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. She made eight appearances on The Mike Douglas Show during the 70s when I was working at a TV station that carried the program. Therefore I probably saw all of her singing performances on Mike Douglas. Cleo, who turned age 91 yesterday, is the only female music artist to receive Grammy nominations in the jazz, popular and classical categories. I enjoyed her pretty voice riding up and down the scale on “Early Autumn.”

Have a wonderful day, dear friend Cathy!
