E is for Evaluate

Blogger’s crazy data loss incident last week caused the wheels and gears in my brain to consider moving my blog elsewhere.  I realize no website is perfect but nonetheless, the thoughts are there.  I asked your opinion about the pros and cons of using Blogger and WordPress.  Some of you were kind to share your experiences, too. Thanks for your insight!

On Tuesday, I was fortunate to talk with Amanda.  During our phone conversation, she recommended I buy WordPress for Dummies.  Not that I’m a dummy, of course, but she told me she had a dozen or so books on WordPress and have found this one to be the best amongst her library of similar topics.  She’s taken the guess out. In fact, she always suggests this book to her friends in the political arena looking to begin their own WordPress blog when they seek her advice.

Despite getting my post recovered from last week’s disaster, one thing gnaws at me still about Blogger.  Someone said I do not own my blog while using Blogspot and for whatever reason, my blog can be pulled without further access on my part.  My hard work would no longer be accessible to manipulate as I please but at the whim of someone else. What? Could this be true?

For now, I’m going to continually back up my Blogspot blog using the ‘Export’ feature under Settings. In case you didn’t read my Saturday post  I recommend that you do and to also take charge over your blog work.  I plan to buy Amanda’s book suggestion to learn all I can while evaluating all possible avenues. There’s a greater chance than not, I will make the move to WordPress.

  1. I need to start doing this daily.  I do it once a month now through an external hard-drive storage service.   Wow, I sounded smart there, didn’t I?

Maybe I should rephrase and say my husband does this for me!

I think you hit a chord with this.   Having that outage felt so stressful.

Thanks for linking.   This was excellent.

    A+

  2. The wordpress blogs certainly have a lot of nice features.  I hope it’s an easy transition for you if you decide to move!

  3.  Well, easiest book in my library.  The rest are all geek/nerd books that go over everything, including how to code your own templates in WordPress.  But, being geek/nerd books they aren’t reader friendly.

If it helps, Major League Baseball just made the move to WP.  And NFL.com has been a WP customer for years.  I can’t wait to hear what you decide.

  4. Now it’s a new day..we can start fresh. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by Acorn Hollow and becoming my newest follower. I have to admit tho, I’m not as crafty and creative as most of the fun blogs out there. Just simply living a country life. I do know one thing…we will be great blog friends.

  5. I already have an account set up with WordPress but find Blogger easier to use. The only problem I had with Blogger was at one time they limited my photo uploads and this time when they went down for maintenance I lost all my comments, but all of my post came back. Even then, I always save my post to my hard drive just in case I lose them on Blogger. For now I am staying at Blogger. Thanks for the information!~Ames

  6.  @google-29732ee3c0b1c1e77a24952fc9cf3077:disqus Sometimes, we just have to step back and evaluate what’s going on around us to make the right decisions for ourselves regardless, if it’s about blogging or life in general. Thanks for your feedback on WordPress.  I’ll take it under consideration while I Evaluate & Adjust my blog options. =D

  7.  @ef90a1e95c469399f55f6069304030ce Discouraged would  have been a good ‘D’ word for last week, definitely!  I believe I was more frustrated than discouraged, though.  Now, I’m just thinking about being prepared and ready so nothing like this catches me off track again. I believe I blame myself just as much as Blogger.  I should’ve known to look for away to backup my blog, instead of trusting someone else to do this for me. Now, I know!

  8. I’m with you in evaluating whether to stay with Blogger.  I already have a WordPress site set up and I used the WordPress platform it when I was the Senior Editor at HomesteadBlogger.  It really is simple to use.
Evaluating is something I’m doing a lot of these days …

    Blessings!

  9. It does get aggravating when you take the time to do all the hard work and then something goes wrong. Don’t get too discouraged, though.
