December Songs BOTB Showdown

Hello, Kittens and Dawgs! I went into this month with Battle of the Bands in mind I knew I wanted a motif but not a Christmas theme.  In today’s showdown, I won’t ask you to vote on a cover song by two different artists.  Instead, I’ve picked two new-to-me songs because this is my birth month (yesterday was my birthday) for you to decide on in December Songs BOTB Showdown!

December Song #1

THE SEASONS – DECEMBER Tchaikovsky

December Song #2

ONCE UPON A DECEMBER Emile Pandolfi

Ok, here’s the drill. Voting is open to everyone visiting. There is NO wrong vote, except if you DON’T vote. You can start by telling me in comments which artist you like best and why (optional).

Which December song gets your vote?

The fun continues with more epic battles underway and I invite you to visit the official manager of BoTB, Stephen for the update list of players.

I hope you’ll join me for Friday Sillies + a whole lot of other Friday fun stuff!

Have a songtastic day!

  1. Happy Belated Birthday, Cathy! Sorry to have missed it, but I hope you and DH had a lovely day. Lots to celebrate, with his new job and all. 🙂

Both of these were good, but the piano in the second one really captivated me. Please give my vote to “Once Upon a December”.

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

    1. Debbie, no worries with being late with the bday wishes. My own folks didn’t call me until a few days afterward. lol Indeed, DH and I have much to celebrate other than me turning a year older. By the way, I’m no older than a day over 30. 😀 Your vote for Pandolfi brings the count 7 to 2. It looks like Tchaikovsky doesn’t have a chance at winning this one.

  2. Hi, CATHY! I hope you had a wonderful birthday.

I’m voting for ‘ONCE UPON A DECEMBER’. The first piece was just a bit too sedate for me.

    1. Stephen, thank you for the bday wishes and for voting, my friend. I have another lopsided battle. The count now stands with Pandolfi leading 6 to 2.

    1. John, okay, that makes Tchailovsky 2 to 5. It’s not looking too good for Contender #1 but it could change. Thanks for stopping in at this busiest time of year to vote. Have a joyous Christmas, my friend!

  3. I know these pieces well and love the Tchaikovsky piece- I have heard other versions but this is. Good one as the pace is not too slow or fast…it’s just right…just like baby bear:) I have to give it to the first one because I love this piece so. Happy Birthday!!

    1. Birgit, thank you for stopping in to listen and vote on my mid-month battle. The more classic Tchaikovsky is recognizable by most and is definitely an excellent piece. The tempo of the arrangement conjures visions of ladies being twirled around in a ballroom at a grand Christmas party. Both December songs are nice. I have your vote recorded for Tchaikovsky. Have a good weekend, my friend!

  4. Happy Birthday Cathy! Hope it was spectacular. Many more to come!

Re: your battle: Wow, both are absolutely lovely pieces of music! I’m going to vote for the 2nd one, Once Upon a December. It transported me. I liked the first one with the full orchestra but it didn’t have the same effect on my that the second one did.

Bask in the glory of your birthday and enjoy this holiday season!

    1. Michele, thank you for the bday wishes. I’m glad you enjoyed this battle and I have to agree with you “Once Upon a December” does transport your mind. I’ll give your vote to Contender #2.

  5. I really enjoyed both songs, and it is very difficult to choose one above the other. But I think I’m going to go with Once Upon a December for the intricate piano movements. Happy Birthday and Happy Holidays!

    1. Hey Mary, thanks for the bday wishes and for voting. Your count gives Contender # Two 4 votes to 0. Will this be a shut out or jus severely lopsided like the last battle?

  6. Hi, Cathy!

Happy birthday, dear friend! Did you bake yourself a cake? 🙂 How does it feel to finally be old enough to vote when the midterm elections roll around? 🙂 Seriously, you had a lot more to celebrate on your birthday this time than in recent years and that makes me very happy.

I enjoyed this concert featuring “longhaired” musicians playing Decemberish piano pieces (while I sipped my black Starbucks). Contestant #1, Tchaikovsky’s classical composition “December: Christmas” boasted a full orchestra while #2, “Once Upon a December,” from the soundtrack of Anastasia, was a piano solo. #1 was a pleasant enough holiday melody, but the second tune resonated with me to a greater extent. Less is more in this case and “Once Upon a December” had more power and drama to it.

Contestant #2 gets my vote, and thank you, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom, thank you for the birthday wishes. How did you remember the date? Did I tell you? Either it’s age or being too busy or a little of both that I can’t recall. lol Yes, I did bake a cake for me. 🙂 Ever since this summer after I made DH’s triple chocolate cake that I wanted to try the same recipe and instead of buttercream frosting to top it, use peppermint buttercream. That’s exactly the kind of cake I made, too. It turned out pretty darn good if you ask me. But, don’t take my word for it, DH also agrees. I must agree with your mewsic choice. I, too prefer Contestant #2 this round. Your vote plus Lee’s and mine make the count 0-3 in Contestant #2’s favor! Thanks for popping over for a visit and voting, my friend! I’ll be by your place soon.

        1. Holy cow, Tom! See, I told you I was just too busy and I absolutely forgot that I mentioned my birthday in this post. *slap forehead* I really need the time away starting next week just to regroup. lol Thanks for pointing out my own announcement. Boy, I’m not only silly but a year older. ?

  7. Well, I like both of these–so peaceful to listen to at the time of night that I’m listening. The second one–the piano solo–has such a beautiful melody. So does the first one which has the added appeal for me of the orchestra.

In the final analysis of the song that lures me in and that touches me most I going to cast my vote for the second piece, “Once Upon a December”. It’s so haunting.

    Nice battle.

    1. Lee, I’m glad you enjoyed both arrangements. It looks like our ears match this round. I feel the same as you do about “Once Upon a December” for the same reason – beautifully haunting. I have your vote recorded. Thanks for popping in today!
