#Cleopatra VS #ArmyNavy in the ‘GET RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM’ #BoTB Showdown

Hello, Kittens & Dawgs!  I slipped up on you, didn’t?  Originally, I planned to return full force with two battles beginning next month but I figured it’s time to get right back where I started from now that summer is almost unofficially over with Labor Day just days away.

In today’s showdown, I’m using the 1975 international hit by Maxine Nightingale Get Right Back Where We Started From. The song didn’t reach the US until January the following year and went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 1, 1976.

Covers are limited for this classic but I rustled together two bands to compete for the golden mic in this contest and surprisingly it’s turned into a battle between the sexes.

In the 2000 children’s flick, An Extremely Goofy Movie, Disney used the all-girl R&B group from England, Cleopatra, to sing the song for the animation feature.

Once again, Disney used Nightingale’s song in 2008 for Shrek Forever After but this time using the American indie rock band, Army Navy.

DID YOU VOTE? No! Okay, but if you leave WITHOUT voting, I won’t be held responsible for what happens to your computer. Just saying is all. 😂

I appreciate you guys for checking in on me after my ear tube surgery.  Things are going well.  My hearing remains muffled and I think this is something I have to live with for now.  The loss in hearing due to chronic ear infections as a child is considered moderate to severe in the right ear and the left is only a little better.  Who knew, right?  I might have to think about hearing aids eventually but I just even go there now.  That’s something I’m having a difficult time accepting.  Thanks for your prayers and thoughts!

With it being the weekend and a holiday one at that, so I’m MIA in Blogosphere.  Don’t worry, I will do return visits to all who leave a comment.  Mark your calendar for September 10th to discover who gets my vote and to see if your favorite is named the winner.

  1. Oh I so love this song! What a great disco memory! I didn’t really appreciate disco back when it was in because I was a rocker and disco wasn’t “cool” but there are so many disco songs now that I absolutely love and Maxine Nightingale’s “Right Back Where We Started From” is one of them.
Of your two contenders, I most enjoyed Cleopatra’s version.
That Disney movie looks adorable! Have you seen it? I loved the Goofy dance scenes and his lady is oh so cute!

Cleopatra gets my vote in this one.
Hope your hearing is improving every day Cathy.

    talk soon,

  2. It sucks when we are young and crap already happens. I hate seeing an 80 year old walk past me with no issues while I limp. I’m sorry to hear about your ears but I hope it clears up. Did the doctor say your hearing would sound muffled? If not, I would contact them to find out…better safe than sorry. I hope you don’t have much pain either. As for the music, I love this song and vote for Cleopatra because they paid homage to this song and you can uunderstand what they say without the instruments drowning them out. This is what I felt with the second one that the instruments were too much and it felt chaotic.

    1. Birgit,

It’s amazing how some elderly folks pass up young folks. I always marveled at my in-laws’ energy when I was in my 20s. Unfortunately by the time they got in the later years’ age caught up with them. Have you been watching AGT this season? There was 70 something female dance partnered with a much younger on the show. That woman not only looked amazing but she moved beautifully! I hope I can move like that when I’m that age. 🙂 Here’s a video of that dancer from AGT.

  3. Hello, CATHY! It’s that me again.

Sorry to learn that your hearing hasn’t been greatly improved by the surgery. I will continue to remember you in prayer when I talk to Him and His Son.

As others also said, I haven’t heard this song in ages but I always did like it. Pretty darn catchy!

CLEOPATRA’s version didn’t deviate much from the original recording, but the original recording was good, so…

And where ArmyNavy DID deviate from the original (namely, in that very high-end guitar playing throughout), I didn’t care for it. So I’m giving my two cents to Cleo, Pat, and Ra.

    1. Stephen,

I didn’t expect the surgery to correct my hearing loss. There’s nothing that can fix that, that I know of anyhow. However, I was expecting this muffledness but the doctor says this is normal. I reckon it’ll just take some time but if the muffledness is no worse than it was before the surgery then I’ll be happy. I believe if the pressure in my Eustachian tube equalizes then it seems only logical that I might have a slight improvement over what I had, though. I guess only time will tell the tale.

I have our vote recorded and appreciate you stopping by this weekend. Now, I’m off to see what you have going on at your place!

  4. Hi Cathy; Happy Labour Day weekend! Summer just FLEW by, didn’t it? Sorry your hearing issues are ongoing, 🙁 I have a wonky right ear, including tinnitus, from a severe infection years ago, so I can somewhat relate. This is one song I haven’t heard in a long time. Please give my vote to Army Navy, They gave it a bit more energy, in my opinion. No battle from me today (no time). I’ll be stepping away from the blogosphere after this weekend to get ready for our trip. Leaving Sept. 6. Have a great September!

    1. Debbie,

I think in the coming weeks the muffledness will improve. I’ll be happy if just gets back to where it was before the surgery. The tubes job is to stabilize the pressure in my ears so things won’t get worse later on. The damage that it can cause is a huge deal to repair not to mention it can lead to deafness. I’ll take the muffledness over deafness any day even though it’s driving me crazy. lol Have a good time on vacation. It sounds like y’all will have a funtastic time.

    1. Sandee,

I’m not going to give anything away this time with BoTB by revealing who’s ahead. 🙂 I appreciate you taking time to visit and vote. I’ll see you shortly.

  5. I didn’t know there was a band called ArmyNavy. The Army-Navy football game is a big deal in my house because I have one Army SGT and one Navy LtCMDR. Tense afternoon!

    1. Jacqui,

Oh WOW, I bet things get purrrty interesting at your place when Army and Navy teams go head-to-head. How do you choose? Thanks for stopping in for a visit and for your vote.

    1. Mimi,

Thanks for joining me over the weekend and for voting. I just can’t believe it’s September already. This week is going to be a crazy one! I’ll see ya soon. 😉

  6. Hi, Cathy!

It can’t be much fun listening to PAwesome, tunetastic sounds when your hearing is muffled. That’s so unfair, and I am very sorry you are saddled with a hearing deficit. I hope doctors will be able to find a way to significantly improve your situation so that you can hear what you’ve been missing.

In today’s BOTB, I had no difficulty making up my mind how to vote. The second contender, Army Navy, an indie rock and power pop band from LA, seems to specialize in providing music for films. Their version of “Get Right Back” sounds like it was made specifically for the soundtrack of an animated children’s film. It is skewed too young and is too lightweight to get my vote. Going in, I was already familiar with Cleo Higgins and her sisters, the English R&B/Pop girl group Cleopatra, and they did not disappoint me with their slick, sophisticated interpretation of the Maxine Nightingale hit. Cleopatra’s version works in the soundtrack of the Goofy movie, but it also stands alone as a classic version of the song to be enjoyed by adults. I love it and Cleopatra gets my vote.

Thank you very much for adding some mewsic to my Saturday morning, dear friend Cathy. Happy September! I wish you and your family a wonderful weekend and I will see you Monday when you present your labor of love MMMM. Take care!

    1. Tom,

It’s a struggle to listen to mewsic with my ears muffled. I try to not get discouraged and hope that things will be better soon. I know it will be, it’s just getting to that point. My hearing won’t be 100%. I knew that when I had the surgery. Unfortunately, there’s no procedure to fix hearing loss to my knowledge. I think you called it right Army Navy’s cover seems more geared for children than adults. Thanks for taking time to stop by this weekend and casting your vote in my Get Right Back BoTB edition. Have a good week, dear friend!

    1. Mary,

Oh yes, I’ll definitely swing by to participate in the championship round. It’s just been such a wild several days with no immediate end in sight. Thanks for stopping by to vote for Cleopatra!

  7. Gosh, I haven’t heard this song in such a long time. It’s a pretty good song. I liked these versions and I liked the original version. The Army Navy started kind of promising but started getting on my nerves. I definitely prefer Cleopatra in this match-up. I might even like them better than the original.

    1. Lee,

Things got a bit wonky at the end of last week then followed a long holiday weekend and I’m pushed to play catch up this morning. Thanks for stopping by for a listen and your vote. I was impressed that you might like Cleopatra better than Maxine Nightingale. I’m heading your way first thing. I better get the coffee going cause boy is it going to be a very full day!
