Childhood Memories

Posted on August 16, 2012
age four and half taken around the time my little brother was born

I’m participating in Mama Kat’s Pretty Much World Famous Writer’s Workshop. One of this week’s prompts is, Share your earliest childhood memory. How old were you? Why was it memorable?

My earliest childhood memory is only a short glance in time. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of those early years to share with you and what few I do have are (hopefully) temporarily locked up on our crashed hard drive.

What I remember most is…

  • My grandparents giving me a rocking chair. I remember I had to hold on to it to steady myself. I must have just learned how to walk. I think this stands out because I LOVED that rocker. My great-uncle made that rocker and I still have it. I passed it to our oldest DD one Christmas, but it’s here in our house.
  • Another time, I recall standing in my crib. I had a fever and was crying. I wanted to play with my toys, but I couldn’t because I had the measles or something like that and for some reason, they didn’t want the toys to be contaminated.
  • I remember snuggling in bed at night between my parents, and my mother using her fingers like a puppet who she called Froggie to help me fall asleep. I remember reaching for Froggie while she would either sing or tell me stories. That part I don’t have much clarity on. Later in life, my own two fingers became Froggie for our children.

These are my earliest childhood memories, and I would dare guess I was under the age of two. There are bits & pieces of other memories from the first five years of my life, but it’s kinda like a slide presentation – brief glimpses with a lot of vivid emotions still attached.

A slide presentation…brief glimpses with a whole lot of emotion. ~That perfectly describes those early snippets of memory. It would be fascinating to be able to mine those memories and figure out why that particular moment stays with you.

I remember the measles too – yuk! I also remember sitting on Grandpa’s lap and getting to pick out one coin from his hand. He always told us to pick the biggest one.

That was sweet. Poor you crying for your toys. I think I remember having the measles too. I was guaranteed to the den sleeping on the pull-out couch. I didn’t like it one bit either.

Wow! That is remembering at a very young age. I think I was three when I remember one particular thing, but most of my memories start at age four.
