Cecil Turtle

For the month of April, I am sharing with pencil illustrations of some memorable Looney Tunes cartoon characters, as I join a community of insane inspiring people who take part in the annual A to Z Challenge to connect with others in Blogosphere .  I’m certain while I’m figuring out which beloved animated figure I put on paper I will learn the identify of some I had long forgotten and perhaps meet some new ones that didn’t cross my path.

Today’s Looney Tunes knock off is of Cecil Turtle and Bugs at the starting line on race day.

Original pencil sketch Cecil Turtle & Bugs Bunny in a modern day tale of the turtle and the hare

Cecil Turtle only made three theatrical appearances and holds the only honor of any Looney Tunes character to outwit Bugs Bunny.

Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your day.  Please leave a direct link for today’s post in comments to ensure others can find an easy way back to you or at the very least make sure your Gravatar profile is updated with your active blog address.  I’m heading over to the A2Z headquarters to see who’s joined the party now.  I’ll be back on Monday for the next letter in the alphabet in my Looney Tunes Art Sketch series.  Have an enjoyable weekend! 1. Great Cecil the Turtle!! I didn’t like that version of Bugs they had on those races though! He wasn’t his usual stinker self! 🙂

  2. Add me to the list of those who didn’t know the turtle has a name! I learned something new today.

    1. Trudy,

With so many who didn’t know, including myself, the turtle’s name I have to wonder how prominent they made it in the shorts. I’m going to have to watch again those cartoons to unlock this mystery.

    1. Happy belated Easter to you, Eugenia! I’ve fallen behind but am trying to devise a better system with A2Zing. I might get the hang of it just as the month comes to an end. The good news will be I’ll have a plan for next year. 😀

      1. You’re doing great with your A2Zing, IMO. It’s no easy task, and then you have to keep up with your normal blog activities. Wow!

    1. Lee,

This has been a fun reliving those old Looney Tune cartoons and then sketching the characters. I really appreciate the gentle encouragement you and John gave me to participate this year. I’m glad that I did.

  3. When I read the title I thought I hadn’t ever seen Cecil, but as soon as I saw your picture I remembered him. Really enjoying these blasts from the past, and taking me back to my childhood. I’m wondering if my favourites will turn up during the month.

  4. I haven’t heard of Cecil, at least, I don’t recall him at all. I like anyone who can outwit Bugs. Sweet drawing.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. Lissa,

Cecil wasn’t one of the long standing characters but if you’re old enough you might have seen him and just forgot. I admit I did until I started gathering ideas for the challenge. 😉

  5. I didn’t know the turtle’s name, but do recognize him when seeing your drawing. So, you did a good job!

    1. Lisa,

Most people do know who Cecil is once they see him. If you’re like me, I either didn’t know the characters’ names or just totally forgot. This is a great way to familiarize myself again with these old cartoons which has been a lot of fun.

    1. The image I found online did made Bugs look way to serious, almost mad so I wanted to give him a lighter expression but kept Cecil’s determined look. Thanks for visiting!

  6. Cecil is awesome, loved this walk back to my kids childhood (and my own). Well done Cathy.

  7. Hi, Cathy!

Good to “C” you, dear friend! I am here for another fun-filled trip back in time to my childhood when I loved watching the characters in Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. I definitely remember Cecil Turtle, and it surprises me that he only appeared in three of the shorts: Tortoise Beats Hare, released 80 years ago in March, 1941, Tortoise Wins by a Hare released in February, 1943, and Rabbit Transit, the vignette you posted here, released in May, 1947. I read that Cecil actually did return in much more recent projects: Wiki tells us he appeared in the 1996 film Space Jam and in the 2003 DVD Looney Tunes: Reality Check. Cecil also had a cameo in one episode of The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries. In the cartoon you posted, Cecil refers to himself as a tortoise. I suppose if the writers were going for accuracy they would have named him Cecil Tortoise, given that he spends all his time on land (I think), but Cecil Turtle is easier to say and for kids to remember and is more fun. Your drawing of the two critter characters leaving the starting line in their famous race is terrific and begs to be colored. Maybe you can bring this one back In LIving Color so that we can admire Cecil’s green body and brown shell.

Have a happy Saturday and blessed Easter Sunday, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

I’m definitely going to colorize all of these sketches at some point. As you know I’m still playing catch up on the past two years of sketches but I’ll get there eventually. I never can keep straight the difference between a tortoise and turtle but as you pointed out turtle is easier to say. It’s also easier to remember. Thanks for visiting!
