#BoTB Round 13 ‘Apple Of My Eye’ showdown + #RMF

This battle has been sitting in ‘drafts’ for two years. I must have gotten one of those poison apples from the Evil Queen and instead of it casting a deep sleeping spell on me, it made me absent-minded.

After reviewing the original content, I think the problem was I didn’t like my original song selections. I like the idea and decided to revamp it. One of the song titles captured my eye, you’re really going to like this, Apple Of My Eye. Borrowing from that I looked for others with a similar title and found two different songs with the same name.

Artist #1-  Badfinger.  According to Wikipedia, the band recorded ‘Apple of My Eye‘ (song lyrics) for their 1971 album,  Ass.  Pete Ham, singer/songwriter penned the lyrics about his mixed feelings about the bands’ decision to leave Apple Records which happened to be the company’s last single recording before its collapse.  Tune your ear and hit play for my first song pick.

Artist #2 – Dolores O’Riordan.  This artist doesn’t need any introduction if you’re familiar with the band, The Cranberries. O’Riordan told Sound Spike who and why she wrote this song. “I remember I was out on the road without my husband and my kids, and all I had to keep me company at times was a picture of him I would carry along from hotel room to hotel room. And I wrote that one of those nights when I was on my own, sitting in one of those lonely hotel rooms.”  The late Irish singer released  ‘Apple of My Eye‘ (song lyrics) on her 2007 album,  Are You Listening. One more time, put your ear to this tune to see what you think.

I’m playing along with Mary this month in her 2nd annual Rocktober Music Fest. Little did I know that Contender #1 song works as a classic 70s song but I’ll close things off with a song I remember best by Badfinger.

Change in plans…At the time I began my posts for this month, I had no idea that DH would need to use some of his vacation time or risk losing it. That being said,  I’ll be away from Blogosphere for the most part until bright an early Tuesday morning, Oct. 22. I’ll do my best to boogie with you but if I slip off the dance floor for too long then know I will eventually make by to see you, so save a dance for me. 😉

Rocktober Mewsic Fest continues tomorrow, so please join me tomorrow for another step back in time!

  1. Man, this is a tough battle because I love The Cranberries and Dolores O’Riordan. “Zombies” is one of my favorite grunge songs from the 90s. But, I really love the Badfinger song because it reminds me of the late Beatles. Hmmm, which one will have my vote? I prefer Dolores O’Riordan’s song as it is peaceful and just love her voice more.

  2. I liked pretty much everything about Dolores O’Riordan’s “Apple of my Eye,” so I’m going with that one. Have a good time with your husband!

  3. Well, the song leaves me uninspired. With that said, both versions are good but I like Badfinger’s version the best. I’m going with Badfinger!

  4. I’m going to have to vote for Delores. I got lost in the tune while it was playing. Thanks for joining in the RocktoberMusicFest and enjoy your time away!

  5. Ooh, both selections for BotB are great in their own right, but my vote is for Dolores, hands down. Her ethereal voice is a force to be reckoned with, and this song is simply beautiful.

    Enjoy your vacation!

  6. I choose The Iveys… who changed their name to Badfinger, because… well, I have no idea why.

Dolores’ version was okay, but for me, not battle worthy. Cathy’s is a tough town.

  7. I have to go with Bad Finger which was more interesting to listen to. I hate saying that since Delores passed away so unexpectedly and she was a powerhouse for The Cranberries. I just hope her family will be ok. That being said I wish you a nice time with your hubby

  8. This is an easy one for me. The song by Delores is well done and okay to listen to, but I find it rather formulaic. Nothing wrong with that really, but up against a beautiful poignant melody like Badfinger presents in their song it kind of recedes for me.

One of my favorite bands–based on a relatively short lived career with outstanding musical output throughout–was and is Badfinger and that’s who gets my vote.

  9. Howdy, CATHY! It’s that you?

Well, honestly, neither song really has me doing backflips (which is a good thing, because I’d only hurt myself), but the Badfinger song really did nuttin’ for me at all. Therefore, please add my BOTB bote to Dolores O’Riordan’s collection.

Incidentally, I’ll have another BOTB contest on November 1st. I’m just doing one-per-month now, always on the 1st of each month.

  10. Interesting battle, Cathy! I don’t remember either of these songs, but enjoyed them both. Sad that two members of Badfinger and Dolores all died tragically. Anyway, my vote goes to Dolores; always loved her voice.

  11. Hi, Cathy!

I need to be more brief than usual with my comment because Mrs. S and I are preparing to hit the road in a few minutes for five more days of work and family responsibility across the state.

I enjoyed both entries in your mid-month band battle and I especially liked the bonus track “Day After Day.” That hit is an example of the Bandfinger band at its best. As far as lyrics go, I did not think their song “Apple Of My Eye” was particularly strong, and the overall sound and feel of the recording left me uninspired. I usually favor female artists and this time is no exception. I like the breathy vocals of Dolores O and the dense power ballad arrangement on her recording. In other words, if I were required to listen to one of these songs on repeat, I would pick Delores’s. I find it very enjoyable. My vote therefore goes to Dolores, and I am sorry to read about her death as a result of drowning in a bathtub.

Have a tunetastic Tuesday, dear friend Cathy!
