Blueberries for Breakfast

DD#1 from 1990 eating blueberries for this week’s Awww Mondays moments hosted by Sandee from Comedy Plus.
Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

but first let me share with you the picture above from a scanned photograph taken with my old Nikon 35mm point n’ shoot camera,  This is DD#1, taken about a month before her baby sister in 1990.  One of our family traditions was that I made blueberry pancakes on Saturday mornings, not every Saturday but a number of them.  This little varmint loved blueberries and so she’d push a chair over to the sink, climb up, and eat the blueberries while I made breakfast.  I allowed her to sneak a few nibbles before I gingerly chided her, reminding her if she ate all of mommy’s blueberries then we couldn’t have blueberry pancakes.  She was a good kid. August and sweet blueberries go hand in hand, don’t you think?

This week’s 4M theme is your choice song picks, however I put together a 10 song playlist featuring blueberry and August titled songs. I hope you enjoy! 😉

My August-Themed Song Titles playlist includes:

  1. BLUEBERRIES FOR BREAKFAST  ~ The Mamas & the Papas
  2. TIME FOR AUGUST ~ Julie London
  3. THE FIRST DAY IN AUGUST ~ Carole King
  4. BLUEBERRY PIE ~ Prefab Sprout
  5. AUGUST MOON ~ The 69 Eyes
  6. STUCK IN THE AUGUST RAIN  ~ Jethro Tull
  7. BLUEBERRY JAM ~Juzzie Smith
  8. AUGUST 7, 4:15 ~ Jon Bon Jovi
  9. HOME IN AUGUST ~ Pierce Fulton
  10. BLUEBERRY PIE ~ Bette Midler

In last week’s battle, Do You Want To Know A Secret showdown, Sharon Clark came out really strong. It became clearly early on that she would certainly win this round. I began to think the scale would severely tipped to one side but Nikki Jean-Verve pulled together some good numbers and in the end the vote count was far closer than I first anticipated with SHARON CLARK edging out her competition by one vote (8 to 7)!

I will leave you with another sample of Sharon’s bluesy sound from her 1997 album, Finally. <—link to YT playlist]

If you have time another song on Sharon’s Finally album I enjoyed is track number 8, III Wind.  Thanks to everyone who voted in this battle. I’ll be back with another BoTB on Tuesday, Sept. 1st and I hope you’ll join me.  That’s a wrap for now. Have a boogietastic week!  X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. I have blueberry syrup with french toast once a week for breakfast; happy to find more blueberry lovers. All these songs were new to me. I really enjoyed several of them but the best one was Blueberry Jam. What an interesting selection of instruments in that one!

    1. Alana,

Mmm, that sounds good blueberry syrup with french toast. I’ve made blueberry syrup before. It’s not a difficult thing at all and so yummy. I used to fix it for our Christmas breakfast when the kids were young. I haven’t done that it in recent years. I might have to do that this year. I like throwing blueberries in a lemon cake mix or from scratch served with either lemon frosting or glaze. That’s delicious! I’m getting so hungry!

  2. The blueberry pancake sounds finger-licking delicious. Thanks for recounting the tale from 90s.

Take care Cathy. Hope things are well in your neck of woods.

    Stay safe.

  3. A very sweet photo of your daughter eating blueberries! They are a staple at our house as I buy the big container of them on each trip to Costco. My husband is a big Jethro Tull fan so your selection of “Stuck in the August Rain: made me smile!

    1. Pat,

Blueberries are wonderful. I don’t do nearly enough with them and haven’t made blueberry pancakes in at least a couple of years. Usually, I make whole wheat pancakes served with maple syrup which is really hard to beat and oh, so filling! I’m happy you enjoyed Jethro Tull in my playlist mix. “Stuck In The August Rain” has a pretty melody, especially the opening, don’t you think? Thanks for the return visit. I hope you’ll pop in when you can. Have a blessed week and again thanks for sharing that yummy sounding Colorado Green Chile recipe! 🙂

  4. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Awww-some 4M Monday, dear friend!

That pic of your first daughter gobbling blueberries is priceless and a perfect selection for the Awww Mondays hop. I can imagine your cute little blueberry thief eating all of mommy’s berries before you could use them in the pancakes. I have loved pancakes all my life. My dad had a portable grill and every Sunday he made the family a “grand slam” breakfast consisting of pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage.

I enjoyed your mewsic set, Cathy. I am a fan of The Mamas & the Papas but never heard that “Blueberries” song of theirs. I very much enjoyed the seductive purring of Julie London and the uncluttered jazz arrangement on “Time For August” along with the pinup girl slideshow. I love Carole King’s overdubbed vocal tracks on “First Day In August.” New to my ears (I think) is the smooth jazz pop styling of the English band Prefab Sprout. I enjoyed their dreamy berry pie song. The 69 Eyes has to be one of the most inventive names for a mewsic act, and I enjoyed the bold sound of that gothic rock band from Finland. Jethro Tull always massages the brain with their recordings and I enjoyed this one about the August rain. You put together a very interesting mix of sounds this time, Cathy, and the Australian one-man band Juzzie Smith is an example as he performs the rousing harmonica instrumental “Blueberry Jam.” You even included an August song by Jon Bon Jovi and a recording that sounds like it belongs in the “house” category by Pierce Fulton. Bette Midler caps of the block with another “Blueberry” song. I was just watching Bette last night co-starring in the hit dramatic comedy TV series The Politician. It is excellent and Mrs. Shady and I recommend it!

I’m happy to know you staged another tight BOTB contest. Unfortunately, I wound up on the losing team for about the 4th or 5th time in a row. 🙂 Thank you very much for the morning entertainment. As I announced on my blog this morning, effective immediately, I am beginning a short blog break to handle family matters and get a little rest, unplugging from social media. I hope to be back in action next Wednesday, Sept. 2. Please take good care of yourself and I’ll see you when I return, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

I’m playing catch up today. Yesterday evening a migraine came and by this morning I barely open my eyes, so after DH got ready to begin his day, I crawled back in bed. I didn’t get back up until 10am. Some of the pain that gripped my head has lifted but I’m not a 100% yet. I made my way over to your place to read of your short hiatus. You’ll be missed but taking care of Mrs. Shady is your #1 priority. Perhaps you can get a little rest in while away from Blogosphere.

Your dad’s grand slam Sunday morning breakfasts reminds me of ventures we took with the kids. We’d load up the truck with our portable propane stove and provisions to make breakfast in the mountains. It was a lot of work to get all of that together but it was sure a lot of fun and when I come across the pictures I took my heart is rekindled with lost memories. I hope our kids remember sweet times as that, too.

Thanks for stopping by for the mewsic pleasure and BoTB results outcome. Stay safe, be well, and have a boogietastic week, my friend!

  5. What a sweet girl💗You brought up a great Theme, CK, Blueberries are so delicous, not only in August 😀 Granny made a blueberrie smoothy after seeing the Theme. Great mewsic too, we loved the song of Jethro Tull Stuck in the August Rain. It seems that we got it now too…MOL..Pawkisses for a delicious Tuesday and thank you for the mewsic…wanna dance now😺🐾😽💞

  6. Just the other day I was thinking about blueberry pancakes with blueberry syrup. I love blueberries, but I rarely have them.

Adding one of my favorite groups–Prefab Sprout–made this post all the better.

I have my results from my last BOTB up now. Only one visit since Saturday!! I’m wondering if something is wrong?

    1. Lee,

I’ve made blueberry syrup. It’s easy to do and much better than the store-bought versions. I remember when we were first married sometimes we’d have breakfast at iHop and I’d get blueberry syrup for my pancakes, maybe my pancakes had blueberries, too. I can’t recall. But, whatever we had I really liked. Thanks for dropping by. I’m heading over to see you in a few, my friend!

    1. Patrick,

Money? You could ask for that? lol I’m glad you didn’t cause I don’t have any to give but now that we’re on the subject, care to spare a buck? lol I’m just teasing! I’m being really silly. I have this enormous migraine that won’t let go but I’m doing my best to push through the pain to stay focused on keeping up. Thanks for dropping by, my friend!

  7. Awww, what a cutie pie. What a wonderful memory. Now I’m hungry for blueberries. Yummy.

Love The Mamas & the Papas. I was so young back then. I’ve had a wonderful journey into old age.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

I was 10 years old the year The Mamas & The Papas “Blueberries For Breakfast” came out. That’s been quite a few years ago. I’m trying to embrace the growing older journey but my mind keeps telling me I’m not old. I think it’s fibbing to me. 🙂 Thanks for stopping in for a visit, my dear!

        1. Sandee,

I’ll be 59 in December. The years really disappear, don’t they? In the past couple of years I’ve gotten more comfortable with growing older. It’s adjustment to look in the mirror to see the signs of age while my brain keeps telling me something different. I’m happy and blessed to be in very good health. I’m learning to accept the new person I’m becoming at this stage and I hope that I’ll never feel old…well at least for not another 30+ years. 😀 Do you think that’s asking for too much? lol I’m delighted you’re enjoying your journey, dear friend. Nature’s fountain of youth is taying young at heart, just remember that! 😉

  8. That is sweet picture and I love blueberries, actually, almost any fruit. My mom made homemade pancakes from scratch but never put fruit in them which I wish she would have. Who knew therewere that many songs out there with blueberries

    1. Birgit,

Home-made pancakes are awesome with or without fruit. I haven’t made blueberry pancakes in a few years. I really do to correct that. 🙂

  9. The joy of raising children is the aww moments. Often we are too busy parenting to capture the moment. Great image.
Well, you certainly covered all of the bases with the music. I had no idea that August was in so many song titles.I haven’t heard the name Julie London in eons. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week.

    1. Driller,

I sure did capture some fantastic awww moments when our kids were small. I wish I had kept it up when they were older and difficult but I failed to do so. Julie London had a lovely voice.

  10. My mom had a roommate who could not cook years ago. She made blueberry pancakes one morning, but put the blueberries in the blender with the pancake batter and turned it on. Yes, lavender pancakes. Blueberries are tasty, but preferably not blended in.

    1. Tom,

I’m glad to know that I played some mewsic that’s down your alley. 🙂 I like the old stuff but I often mix things up on CAAC. Thanks for joining me!
