Autumn #humor, weather talk, breakfast for dinner, and BoTB results

#HappyTuesday with Sandee at Comedy Plus

It was just a few weeks ago I was declaring my farewells to the unofficial end of summer and now it’s really fall. This is the first day of autumn!  The change has definitely been felt especially in the overnight lows the past couple of nights dipping to the upper-40s. I wonder if Hurricane Sally has anything to do with the cool temps?  Probably. I’m not complaining because I love it right now. It’s winter I’m not looking forward to but then you knew that, right? 😉

Daddy got to come from the hospital Saturday. I got to speak with him Sunday and he sounds a ton better than he did the previous week.  They monitored him remotely for a few days. My niece who’s a RN is/was supposed to return the monitor to the hospital, so I’m not sure if that was done yet.  I need to check in again with my folks today.  I mentioned the doctor thinks he needs a pacemaker, but he isn’t budging on having that done.  He’s stubborn as a mule!  I think he’ll have PT come by the house for a bit. I’m not sure what that’s for. Do they do PT for patients with broken ribs? I’m glad he’s home. I just hope there aren’t any more incidents for either of my folks.  Thanks for y’alls prayers!

A few nights ago, I made breakfast for dinner.  Mmm, good!

Southern breakfast for dinner – tomato, grits, egg, biscuits, gravy, & sausage

The weekend mornings are the only time I can make a huge breakfast but I found encouragement from a blogger or two in recent months who serve breakfast for dinner and that’s what I did. It’s not that I haven’t done this before but rather it’s been a long over due practice.  A month ago I took a page from a good blog buddy making wholewheat pancakes served with maple syrup and sausage for dinner.  I failed to snap a picture of that fabulous switch-a-roo feast. I need to do that again soon!

Last night I fixed homemade pimento cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for dinner. Usually I’ll fix peanut butter sandwiches to go with the tomato soup but I happened to have everything needed on hand to make the pimento cheese spread. I absolutely love my recipe!

What do you do to kick off autumn? I’m sitting out my autumn mix candies. You know a mix of candy corn and pumpkins.  I like eating a little of the sweetsy good stuff but mostly I like having it on display because it reminds me of my childhood and I incorporated it into our children’s upbringing.  I’m tempted to have hot chocolate but the weather isn’t quite cool enough to have it yet. I’ll patiently wait. Maybe, I can make a batch of homemade marshmallows to pop on top of our hot chocolatey drinks when the time is purrfect!

We bought these mugs when we went to Maine in 2004 for our 20th anniversary & family vacation. I guess I’ll need to get these out, too.

During the summer while on a blog hiatus of sorts I prepared multiple future posts for CAAC.  All I can say is it’s a good thing I’m double checking my content before it goes live because I’ve made some big goofs.  Like I almost shared last week’s BoTB, results in yesterday’s post. *roll eyes*

Anyway, I used two of The Mamas & Papaws popular hits recorded by two different bands and asked y’all to pick the artist you liked the best.  The results are in and counted revealing the Under the Radar winner to be…FOXES & FOSSILS with a 11 to 3 victory! It’s been awhile since I’ve had a battle to lean this fall to one side.

I appreciate everyone who took part in the voting process.  It’s always a good idea to exercise one’s rights in this free society. My next showdown is slated for October 1st, so be sure to jot that important date down in your appointment book to return and do it again.   I’ll leave you with another sample of today’s champs with their Neil Young “Harvest Moon” cover.

It’s time to grab a cup of coffee and follow along as I head off to visit Sandee for some Happy Tuesdays giggles at Comedy-Plus, then I’ll check out Random Tuesday Thoughts with Stacy Uncorked, and finishing things up by checking out this week’s word prompt found at Eugi’s Causerie for the wannabe poet buried inside.   That’s a wrap for now but come back tomorrow for Wild Wednesdays where just about anything goes! 😉

  1. Glad your daddy is home, CK and that he’s feeling better. We’re listening to the song while we’re writing, and it really catch me💗Thanks for the laughs, seems like an endless raking with such a neigbour…MOL…😸Pawkisses for a Happy Weekend🐾😽💞

  2. I am glad your Dad is doing better, Cathy.

That “Harvest Moon” cover was quite a comeback for Maggie Adams.

    1. Thanks, Myke! Things kept me busy and I have yet to call to speak to my folks this week. I need to do that first thing this morning…well, after the chickens get up. 🙂 Maggie Adams did a lovely job with “Harvest Moon”, didn’t she? Have a good day, my friend!

  3. Cathy, I’m so glad your father is better! We are fans of breakfast food and have breakfast for dinner frequently and yes, we eat grits! And this cooler weather we are having is glorious! Thanks for the mention, Btw! 🥰🍂 🍁

    1. Eugenia,

Yay, you all are grit eaters, too! I remember DD#2 telling this kid from NYC that when he visits Tennessee that he needed to order a ‘grit’, yes singular form. She did that on purpose to mess with him. I don’t know if ever order a grit while in this part of the country but I’d imagine the strange look he might have gotten if he did. lol

    1. Mimi,

That’s cool! I like traditions like that. We used to do Sunday night hotdogs when the kids were at home. Now, I only do it when the mood hits.

  4. Sometimes I’ll have cereal for dinner if I’m not hungry enough for a full spread and my wife’s not home to eat. I’ve been thinking about biscuits and gravy of late. Fixed biscuits this morning, but didn’t have ingredients for the gravy.

Pimiento cheese spread must be kind of a regional thing. I used to get the store bought spread back in TN but when I’ve got a craving for it here in CA I’ve not been able to find it. Guess I could use your recipe, but seems like a lot for me to do for just me. My wife probably wouldn’t even try the stuff just like she avoids gravy. Guess it doesn’t appeal to her Ecuadorian tastes.

I’m not too surprised that my BOTB pick won, but both choices were pretty good.

    1. Lee,

Next time you have everything for gravy make it and store it in the freezer. My pimento cheese recipe says it can be stored in the refrigerator for 6 months. It’s never lasted that long here but I’d think for one person’s use then you could enjoy it whenever you want in that time frame without fear of it spoiling. It’s really easy to make.

I didn’t think my battle would be quite so heavy to one side but I guessed wrong. lol Thanks for checking out the battle stats. Have a good day, my friend!

  5. Your breakfast looked amazing, but I’d switch grits to hashbrowns. Even though I’m from the South, I never really developed a taste for grits. If they’re covered in cheese or sauce, that’s a different story! My mom always just used butter on thm. Anyway, wish I could say we’re getting fall weather here, but no such luck. Cooler means about 85. Haha!

  6. I’ve lived here for over 30 years and I have yet to eat any grits. But breakfast for dinner is a good idea.

Glad your father is doing better.

    1. John,

I never had grits until after I got married and moved to Tennessee. I’m sure WV folks ate grits but I sure don’t remember it. I think the first time I ever had grits was at Cracker Barrel. You ought to try grits! I like having a little salt in mine. Yum! Of course, if I have gravy then that goes on it. 🙂 Thanks for the prayers for Daddy.

  7. I’m glad your father is doing better. He’s in my prayers.

Love all the funnies. Hubby goes out each morning and cleans up the leaves from our tree. By the time he comes back in you can’t tell he went out. I love fall.

Yay on the winner of the battle of the bands.

Thank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Happy Tuesday. Love and hugs, Cathy. ♥

  8. I…I am not one for sausage, actually I can’t even look at it as I find it gross. I have been like that my whole life. One day I should write the story of the “sausage incident” when my mom lost it on me when I refused to try sausage. I do like having oatmeal or my toast and honey. I love your funnies and, in fact, I was guilty of the leaves being blown to the neighbour’s yard. Glad they won the battle

    1. Birgit,

I don’t have too much problem with foods. However, I really don’t care for wild game. My daddy has been after me to try deer and I just can’t bring myself to give in. He loves the stuff, though. Yes, you’ll have to share the story behind your disdain for sausage.

  9. I really like that true southern breakfast and all the other southern yummies! Oh, those fall funnies were really good!

    1. Brian,

When we were first marriage, we got a kitten. She was really small. We didn’t know what to name her and didn’t have any food the house, except some left over gravy from breakfast. She really liked it, so that’s what we named her. 🙂

  10. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Tickle Me Tuesday and First Day of Autumn, dear friend!

I’m happy to know things are going better for your daddy and that he is out of the hospital. I don’t blame him for having second thoughts about an invasive surgery at this stage of the game. I wish him a successful convalescence.

What a coincidence! Last night Mrs. Shady granted my request and made pancakes for dinner. They were delicious. She also made chicken and gravy with waffles and I will try that meal today. Nothing reminds me of my boyhood Halloweens more than pumpkins in the fields and bowls filled with candy corn. As a kid I ate a ton of it, and I always beg Mrs. S to bake pumpkin pies starting around this time of year.

Ha! I like that cartoon of the smart homeowner selling his fallen autumn leaves. That next cartoon reminds me of the neighbor woman we had when I was a boy. Every day she spent an hour or more bent over her lawn picking up leaves that had blown onto her property from our trees. As she worked, she often looked over at our house and glared. She reminded me of the wicked witch from Wizard of Oz. 🙂

Thanks for reporting the final tally of your latest band battle. I saw the Foxes and Fossils landslide coming from from day. Thanks for posting their rendition of that Neil Young song. F&F boasts three talented young female singers who takes turns on lead. The band has done many great covers and I will be presenting a post devoted exclusively to them at Shady’s Place.

Thank you for the cartoons to Tickle me on Tuesday, the mewsic and the update on your dad’s condition. Have a groovy Tuesday, dear friend Cathy!
