An Owl snuggled in a tree ready for some Zzz

It is day 17 of the A to Z Challenge and from this point forward things will be a bit sticky for me as I try to wind this challenge up with each daily art illustration in which now I’ve caught up my scheduled posts. Yikes, right? Today, we’re covering the alphabet prompt “O”.  In 2017, I sketched an owl nestled in a hollow tree.  Looking back on that drawing it seems a bit confusing.  That owl looks more like a cross between a penguin and an owl.  Needless to say, I made some serious changes to my Procreate recreation.  Take a look at the then and now illustrations.

My refresh take on the owl doesn’t make him look like the “night owl” that he’s supposed to be but then that’s me for ya.  I’m definitely not a night owl but I know some of you are and you make like my song pick for today, “Night Owl” by James Taylor.

It’s time to head over to the A2Z headquarters and you’re welcome to come with me.  Thanks for including me in your day.  This is CAAC signing off, I’ll be back tomorrow with the next letter in the alphabet!

  1. Looks like an owl to me and I love the colors. It brings the sketch to life.

Have a fabulous day and week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

  2. Sorry the link to the video doesn’t seem to be working, Cathy. I’ll post again and add a different video. If that fails, you can easily find the song on YouTube.

  3. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Monday and O-Day, dear friend! I hope you and DH and your entire family had a blessed Easter.

On your original drawing, I would not have had any difficulty identifying the critter in the tree as an owl, even without your caption. That said, the colorized version is indeed an improvement. Placing a cute blue Zzz nightcap on the owl’s head was a great idea. I suppose he is a nonconformist owl, choosing to sleep at night like the rest of us. Surely, those big bright yellow eyes glow in the dark, and his fluffy tan and brown speckled plumage makes him look so cuddly that I just wanna grab and smooch him. if I did, I’m pretty sure I’d be pecked hard on the lip and have my face clawed. I also like the way you filled in the background with clouds, stars and full moon set against a cobalt blue nighttime sky. It’s a delightful, whimsical scene, Cathy!

I enjoyed the James Taylor “Night Owl” song. There’s another song famous to oldies collectors entitled “Night Owl,” originally spelled “Nite Owl,” released as a single around Halloween in 1955. When I was in my 20s, I had this song in my vinyl collection. This owl song was waxed by a R&B group called Tony Allen and The Champs:

Thank you for the marvelous artwork and mewsic, dear friend Cathy. Have a wonderful week and I’ll be back tomorrow for your P-Day post!
