Songs that tell a story

Posted on February 17, 2020
Awww Mondays hosted by Sandee from Comedy Plus.

Welcome to Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me! I’m MIA in Blogosphere as DH is off for Presidents Day.  Originally this day was set up to mark the anniversary of two great presidents’ birth – George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, so I thought Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” was suiting for both of these great men. After all, they were rebels, were they not? Washington went against the British empire to secure America’s freedom and Lincoln’s desire that all man be free abolished slavery.

Robin from Crazy Songbird’s World pitched a fabulous theme for this week, asking us to share songs that tell a story.  I’m always on the look for new-to-me songs. With this theme I went to my ole pal Google and found a great list to choose at Spinditty. Of the 165 song titles I loved the name of this selection, Three Wooden Crosses by Randy Travis. My first thought was this is a story about Jesus on Calvary’s hill with the two thieves but it’s not.  It is a story of redemption but one with a modern day twist. Spinditty says…

It tells the story of a farmer, a teacher, a preacher and a prostitute who were on an ill-fated bus trip to Mexico, all for different reasons.

Their bus ran a stop sign and collided with an 18-wheeler. The farmer and teacher died, and as the preacher lay dying, he placed a bloodstained Bible into the hands of the hooker. Now all that exists at the accident site are three wooden crosses.

The song is told from the perspective of the woman’s son, who is now a preacher himself. The listener is left to assume that the hooker read the blood-stained Bible, found redemption in its spiritual message, and went on to marry and have a family.

Here are the lyrics to Three Wooden Crosses.

One old favorite and one new to me. Near death experiences can certainly change the direction of a person’s life totally – I actually know someone (the son of a dear friend) whose life was changedby an accident on his way home from football practice in high school. Life really is all about the decisions you make, and some have life altering effects.

I was sick all weekend ;( The weather has been a roller coaster as it can be warm one day and cold the next. I took Monday off (since I live in Japan and we don’t celebrate President’s Day) to just sleep and heal. But, great Randy song! Actually, Billy Idol has fascinating stories in his songs. “White Wedding” instantly comes to my mind as it talks about his sister’s wedding.

Love this prompt. It inspired to write my own post!

      Amy,

I’m sorry that you’ve been sick. It’s that time of the year, though. Thankfully, we are in good health. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that our good fortune continues. You never know when that can change. I’m happy you found inspiration with this post to join in the fun, my dear!

      Joyce,

The only thing Billy Idol’s song has in common with our late presidents is that they were rebels in their times. The song lyrics actually refers to a brand of bourbon whiskey but you’re right a Rebel’s Yell does reference a Confederate battle cry which if you take it as that then there’s a stronger relationship to Lincoln with this song then Washington but as I said I picked the song because of it’s title alone. Sometimes you have to be a rebel to do what’s right for yourself and country. Thanks for boogieing by, my dear! 🙂

I have to say that picture with the 2 little squirrels kissing is an amazing picture! It’s just too cute! Great job girlfriend! HUGS

    Love the Aww Monday image.
I first found the Randy Travis “Three Wooden Crosses” when I bought a gospel CD of his several years ago. He recorded a second gospel album soon after that and his third collection of inspirational songs will be released this week. We seem to be on the same page this week, as I chose an old hymn of the church for my selection. Have a blessed week.,

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Presidents Day, dear friend. (Don’t forget – no mail delivery today.) The official music video for “Rebel Yell” was played heavily on the hard rock/heavy metal show that aired late at night on weekends on the MTV station where I worked at the time. The most exciting part of the song/video for me is at 2:30 when Steve Stevens cuts loose on his guitar solo.

I enjoyed the plot twist and inspirational lesson found in Randy’s song “Three Wooden Crosses.” It’s not what happens to you, it’s what you do about it – how you respond, the action you take – that makes all the difference. The marriage meme tells the truth and I appreciate you posting it.

Have a wonderful week, dear friend Cathy!
